This book is poignant and timely. It is also well researched. Lending voice to the children detained at the U.S. Southern border is necessary for readers of all ages to learn about.

Wow does this one hit hard. I really love the varied illustrations. It helps get the point across that these are the stories of many children and that each of their stories is important and unique...I’m not sure if the text gets that point across if you skip the front and back matter (which we know kids might do!). But this is so so good and does something that no other book is doing.

Emotional first person accounts bring to light the conditions and plight of children, women, and families at the US/Mexican border control. These children are without parents and in limbo. The stories of these 61 children detained there are each illustrated by well known LatinX illustrators.. The illustrations are powerful and diverse. The stories of emotional and moving. A very powerful book that brings to life the real feelings and experiences of the children and families caught in the migration web on the border.

This is a collection of testimonials from children who were held in border camps. Particularly the Clinton border camp. They were locked away, split from their family, and made to live in inhumane conditions. We did that. American did it. The President of the US did it. And we can not forget it, and we can not let it happen again!. Every library and every school should have a copy of this book, so this pathetic event in our recent past, NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN!

Must read! This picture book is by and about the children detained at the U.S./Mexico border in unsafe and unsanitary conditions. The illustrations are gorgeous and heartbreaking and I loved some of the subtle details.

This is not a traditional children's book--though children's books authors contributed to the illustrations, go support them, too!--in that the topic is heavy and will require more adult guidance for handling this big topic. Would I read this at my public storytime? Probably not. Will I add it to my displays and reading recommendations? Yes! The author provides post-reading exercises to help facilitate a discussion that is best done 1:1 rather than in a storytime setting.

If you strongly believe that this is too heavy for your child to read or be exposed to, flip that and think of the children who contributed to this work who are actually ~experiencing~ life in detainment. This is a bilingual book that is a quick, yet impactful, read.

Hear My Voice is a small but powerful book, offering up the testimonies of children detained in the USA at the southern border. The children shown here are a variety of ages and from a variety of places, but all of them have been treated in truly heinous manners by the USA detention system. Offering up a disjointed narrative that imitates the ways in which children might speak out all at once, we see the journey they took to arrive in the USA and the things they have faced since arrival. With seventeen different Mexican and Mexican American artists featured, the art helps bring these painful and powerful stories to life. The inclusion of both English and Spanish text allows the story to be accessible by all the more people.

This is a perfect book to read with children when discussing the things happening at the USA's southern border facilities. There is so much to learn and discuss within this book that it's best to read it together, but I can't recommend that communal reading of it enough.

A Heartbreaking Book That Is A Call to Action

Thank you to NetGalley for providing a digital review copy of this book.

Heartrending. That is the word that would best describe my feelings as I read Hear My Voice/Escucha mi voz: The Testimonies of Children Detained at the Southern Border of the United States compiled by Warren Binford for Project Amplify. This is a powerful account of the stories of immigrant children trapped in the horrible conditions of the “camps” at the borders and other areas of the country.

The beautiful compilation of illustrations by 17 Mexican and Mexican-American artists serves as a tapestry for conveying the hard truth of the suffering of these children. My heart broke reading the testimony of these children. The stories are actual testimony of children who are being held by the U.S. government. The book is written in both English and Spanish.

This book is in the format of a children’s book, but don’t make any mistakes, it is for adults too. Children need to read and discuss this book so they don’t grow up and become perpetrators of this type of trauma on other human beings. Adults need to read it so they can wake up and take action. Don’t skip the portion at the end of the book titled “Give Children A Voice” which details the Flores lawsuit, as well as “Questions to Ask and Think About for younger readers and suggestions for how you and your family can help with the situation.

This book is a great candidate for a community read in addition to being read in K-12. Discussion needs to occur so that this issue doesn’t fade to the background and out of sight. Also, one of the bonuses of this book is that if you do purchase it, proceeds will go to support Project Amplify.

I read this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This book amplifies children's stories and allows other children to see the world from another perspective. As a teacher I found the Appendix would be helpful to start conversations with my students.

Outstanding. A must-purchase title for all public and school libraries. This important book shares first-person accounts of horrific conditions in border detention centers, pairing quotes from children with the artwork of prominent Latinx artists. I hope this book get amplified by librarians everywhere!

**Thank you to NetGalley, creators Warren Binford and Project Amplify, and Workman Publishing Company for the eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.**

This book is emotional. Reading about the hundreds and hundreds of children and teens who have been locked away from the public eye with little to no human rights protection is so disheartening and disgusting. These children shared their words in hope for change, and I hope that change comes immediately.

The use of children's voices in a nonfiction picture book is so powerful in itself because it is now in a language that children and young readers can understand. They are seeing illustrations and statements about the brutal mistreatment of these individuals being held in the detention centers, so not only will this book help to spark a conversation on immigration, but it can hopefully start conversations on human rights and government treatment, as well.

I really appreciate all of the notes and resources listed in this book. It is nice to see the resources available to readers on how they can help and questions they should be asking themselves. The background information was very helpful in gaining a better understanding of the children as real people and not fictional characters, as well.

We need more books, children's especially, that are multilingual like this one to increase inclusivity for all readers.

Overall, a really amazing and powerful book. I am looking forward to sharing this book's message and getting it into the hands of many, many readers.

Children tell it how it is. They don't have ulterior motives or enough prior knowledge to understand how shifting their story may or may not influence the listener. They just tell their story. That makes Hear My Voice even more wrenching, and probably more important, to read. While it won't take someone long to get through this book, it is one that the reader needs to revisit. The images on each page beg for viewers to analyze their messages. This is a beautiful book that speaks the truth in a powerful way.

This book is an incredible resource for starting conversations about immigration and child detention at our southern border. Hear My Voice is beautifully and thoughtfully illustrated, and the supplementary materials offer a great starting point for educating children on such a difficult topic.

This bilingual book tells the story of detained children at the U.S. border in their own words. The illustrations are breathtaking and the children's words are heartbreaking. It's a punch to the gut and such an important book. I wish it could be required reading for all Americans - especially our lawmakers.

Thanks to NetGalley and Workman Publishing Company for an advanced copy of this title.

This story, as told by the children of the Clint, TX detention center, is so remarkable in its simplicity. The story told is one of fear and anguish, but also of hope. The Foreword and "Giving Children a Voice" sections frame the stories and give context to a very complicated problem to which there is no easy solution. The "Questions to ask" provided at the end of the book are insightful and thought-provoking.
Visually, the book is beautiful. The illustrations capture the cultures and range of emotions brilliantly. I would recommend this book to anyone, with or without children, who has questions about what is happening to immigrant children at the border.

A book that helps to capture the trauma and stories of being an immigrant at the US/Mexico border. I really loved how this was laid out and worked to amplify stories rather than tell them.

Every kid and adult needs to read this. This book is very, very powerful, but in a kid friendly way. This book opened a lot of discussion with my 7 and 10 year old. This book was scary, sad, and ultimately horrifying.

It was absolutely gut wrenching to read the grim reality of the experiences had by these children. Written beautifully and appropriately for young readers with great context for adults to further research. I particularly loved that it’s in both Spanish and English.
