This is the second book I am reading by this author in the weather series. I have never lived through a hailstorm and after reading this I hope I never do. This book centers around Aunt Kim, Uncle Steve and their nephew Frankie and nieces Sarah and Olivia. The children come to visit in Colorado and are looking forward to a fun filled summer. Unfortunately a big storm is on the way. I goes into detail of what happens and what precautions need to be taken in a hailstorm. Like the other books it is done in comic book fashion and will definately appeal to children. I think it would be good for age 7 up.

As a Colorado native who is very used to hailstorms, I loved this book! I appreciated the two perspectives of those who were used to hailstorms versus those who were visiting. I myself learned a ton and found the information to be digestible and fascinating!

I have read a few books by this author now and I really like the writing style for the topics and the illustrations work really well with them. This is pitched just right at the target audience too.

This book focuses on an area called Hail Alley in the US (I am from the UK and we have hail here but generally nothing like this!). The book was great to give the overview of what happens and why and I liked the approach in that it was done to help people visiting the area - a great way to introduce the topic and to encourage further research.

It is 3.5 stars from me for this one, rounded up to 4 stars for Goodreads and Amazon - another good book!

In this children’s comic, we follow Olivia, Sarah, and Frankie as they visit their aunt and uncle at their home in Colorado for summer vacation. The children want to go outside to swim but a storm is coming. Through the comics, the aunt and uncle tell them about hail storms, what they are, how they’re created, and how dangerous they are.

As with the book I previously reviewed, this book is extremely educational and I think using comics in an educational way is a great way to interest children. This book uses the same trends as the others with vocabulary terms used throughout as well as a glossary in the back of the book that includes a couple of terms. Again, there is a list of further reading that you can do if you would like to learn more about hail. This book is also around 32 pages long.

I think this would be a nice book to use when introducing hail and weather as it takes the time to explain some terms you’ll see when researching this topic. This book is intended for children around grades 2 or 3 and I would definitely agree with that. The terms and subject matter are at a higher level than those and younger grades would understand and I don’t think children that are older would be interested because they begin to read longer books. I personally wasn’t a big fan of the art style but that just might be my personal taste.

There are other books in the Weather Warriors series that involve different types of weather. I would definitely recommend them if you enjoyed this book as they are by the same author and illustrator. I think I cool idea if you were reading these books to students would be to have them draw their own comic involving the weather. Since many children may not know what hail actually is I think it would be a good idea to show them a video of a hail storm after reading the book.

Definitely recommend for those interested in a science comic!

Reasonable, but underwhelming, primer for hail – the formation of the stones, the damage costs the storms can bring, and so on. The book is designed as a graphic novel (with the same awkward art as the rest of the series, that makes everyone look deformed almost), and features such drama as a postponed swim in the outdoor pool, and herding cattle out of harm's way on a neighbouring farm. This series is worth consideration, perhaps, but I do think the better student would quickly be able to come up with just as much information for a class presentation as we get here.
