The story is very heartbreaking as it is. In general I like historical fiction and not so much books based on true stories. The reasoning behind it is that I cry even more if it is a story like this. Just heartbreaking. This extended expert gave me enough insight to want to finish the book. I just ordered a copy of the full version and cannot wait to finish this story.

Going off of the fact that this book is based off of a true story, I can't even imagine how heartbreaking the full-length novel must be. I really would love to know what happened to Ruth Ann by the end of her story, especially because of the style that this book is written in - blending historical context with dramatic style. I think I'm really going to look into this and Ruth Ann's life, and what it meant for the future as a whole, considering some of the events going on today.

I read the preview of this book and it is heartbreaking! The book is based on a true story of an unwed woman who gives birth to her baby girl, who is taken away. The mother fights for her rights to her baby and her own freedom. Definitely a must read.
Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Too bad I was too late to get this book in full. However, even judging by first 4 chapters in the preview I can say that this book is scarier than and thought-up, made-up thrillers. Truth always is... scarier.
A young defenseless girl thrown at the mercy of state and at person with God's complex. Her only fault is being born poor, having a mother with mental illness, being raped by her employer's nephew and having a child out of wedlock. She is locked in the institution, deemed feebleminded and... marked to 'slaughter'....She has no rights, no voice, no protection. Is she strong enough to survive? Is she brave enough to take on this cold heartless world?
Well, K.D Alden created Ruth Ann Riley character based on the real person or.. many real women. The author has given her creation enough strength and enough pain to make this book gut-wrenching and believable, 'throw at the wall' and unputdownable.
I wish I could have read it in full.

Book based on a true story of a landmark Supreme Court case taking place in 1924 to a Virginia woman.
The preview chapters really intrigued me and I must now read the full book.
Moving story about a woman's courage and strength despite all the odds stacked against her.

I was given a complimentary copy. Thank you.
All opinions expressed are my own.

A heartbreaking yet utterly inspiring tale, based on a true story in which one unwed woman gives birth, is institutionalized, and has her baby taken away. Her fight to gain her freedom and her child goes all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court. This preview was so compelling that I MUST read the whole book now!

A MOTHER'S PROMISE-K.D. ALDEN

I received the chapters 1-4 on my Kindle from Net Galley. It is a great beginning and quite intriguing.

I found it difficult to put down as I followed the Ruth Ann and Glory's story from the beginning. However, I am now at the end of chapter 4 and would very much like the rest of the book on my Kindle.

True story of a young woman who at the mercy of the government in Virginia had be institutionalized for having a baby out of wedlock. As she learns her fate being in this home, her plan is birthed and at the end of chapter four......well, there I am.

After reading the synopsis for this book I quickly added it to my TBR. This preview is the perfect sneak peak into Ruth Ann's world and I cannot wait until this one publishes so that I can find out where the story goes after chapter 4.

I enjoyed the premise of "A Mother's Promise" - historical fiction is one of my favorite genres. The characters in this story started to feel pretty interesting by the end of this preview, but the internal monologue of Ruth Ann was at times frustrating.

The depiction of the life of someone at a state run institution, and the choices that are taken from them are so astounding. I really want to learn more about this true story on which this novel is based.

A very intriguing start to this book, but I wasn't as invested as I expected to feel by the end of the first few chapters. Perhaps the finished version will be more engrossing, and I'll definitely still keep it on my to-read list!

Thanks to Forever and NetGalley for this free preview in exchange for my honest review.

I loved the cover . I'm not able to give a proper review because I use the netgalley shelf only now. Kindle took up too much space on phone. I love the app but some books like this one are unreadable.

Captivating straight from page 1. Great start to what I assume to be an epic story!

I recently read Q by Christina Dalcher, which was a sci-fi thriller touching the topic of ‘shaping’ the futuristic generation based on some predetermined criteria. That was the first time I heard about the concept of eugenics and its abuse, and the horrors that happened back in the 20s, which made me pick up this book preview.

I was immediately hooked by Ruth Ann as a character, and I flew through the pages. I particularly loved how even though this was a historical fiction, the language used had a modern feeling to it. Ruth’s thought process and her internal banters were very relevant to today’s readers - they were snappy, darkly funny, and so enjoyable.

I will be picking this for my TBR list. Unfortunately I could only ‘wish’ for the full book, instead of ‘request’.

Great, important story. Enjoyable writing style!

Cannot wait until i can read the entire book! A Mother's Promise is based on a true story whereby Ruth Ann Riley had to give up her baby when sent to a state run institution and her fight to reclaim her baby. Think i will eventually need a tissue or two for this book!
