As a listener of the toast, I enjoyed reading this book and being able to hear Claudia’s words coming alive from the pages…I would actually like to listen to this audiobook! As a teacher, after a long day I love a book with chapters that tell their own stories so that I can read one , take a nap, and not lose my place. I liked learning more about Claudia’s story with her typical humor.

This is a fun read. I don’t think it’s for everyone as her free and sometimes mocking spirit can rub people the wrong way. If you are looking for something light and have a sense of humor, it totally worth the read.

Girl With No Job had the potential to be a deep and meaningful book, but unfortunately it fell flat. Claudia does not dig into her psyche, and seems very immature. There isn´t any deep analysis of her canceling and her mother. It is very self involved.

Claudia Oshry proves that though she might not be a seasoned writer, she's in the least an educated one who can write a sentence with a biting punchline. Is the book laugh out loud funny? No. But some sentences are clever enough for a well-deserved, resounding HA! The problem with Girl With No Job is that it never feels inspired. As Oshry admits, the book was written during the time of COVID - 19 quarantine, and although that proved to be a subsequent amount of time to write a book, Oshry's memoirs feel like more of a finished assignment than a passion anxiously bursting with anticipation to be put to paper. As someone who was not familiar with Claudia Oshry before reading the book, the writing feels intended for a niche group only and not a universal audience. Because of this, Girl With No Job will disappear in stacks of more refined memoirs that offer a clearer thesis or pack a heavier punch. Ultimately, Oshry's writing teeters beyween what could have been an aspiring advice book or a cunning observation of society like work from The Betches, and fails in both aspects. In the end, what is left is a convolution of mundane stories from a prosaic, eye-rollingly privileged voice.

a pleasant surprise! tbh I impulsively requested GIRL WITH NO JOB by Claudia Oshry from Netgalley bc I assumed it was commentary on social media culture. And it was, but it’s really a memoir by a professional seeker of attention. brief synopsis: Claudia Oshry is from a close New York Modern Orthodox Jewish family. her dad died during her freshman year of high school, & she began what’s now a media brand/company during her freshman year of college. her show Morning Breath was cancelled, & she was cancelled due to her Islamophobic tweets in 2018. since then she’s cohosted the Morning Toast podcast w/ her sister re: pop culture. she still has 3m followers on Instagram & leads a career as a social media celebrity. I hadn’t heard of any of the above tbh until I mistakenly picked up this review copy. tbh I probably wouldn’t pick it up if I knew. But GIRL WITH NO JOB is surprisingly self-aware & thoughtful! notable quotation: “a toast to the wild ones!”

Two stars for this memoir. Claudia Oshry has built quite an impressive empire with her brand and popular podcast... and she knows it. I finished this book pretty quickly and was left wondering why I bothered. The amount of name-dropping and not-so-humble bragging about her celebrity encounters is tiresome. We get it, you are a celebrity getting to hang out with other celebrities! The high points involve her candidness with her body image struggles, which will be relatable to much of her target audience. And for anyone hoping to gain insight from on the book on Claudia’s awful mother, you will be mistaken. She is mentioned and it is clear that Claudia stands by her. If you’re looking for a quick, vapid read then I recommend this one.

I was interested to read Claudia's book as I had followed her journey for the past few years. She is a funny woman and parts of that definitely came through in her memoir. Unfortunately for me, it just lacked a lot of depth. She touched on tough topics like the untimely death of her father and the struggle of being in the spotlight but I felt as though she was just scratching the surface. At 25, she's still got a lot to learn and experience so perhaps that's what is missing. If you're a big fan of hers though I'm sure you'll love it.

Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review.

Sigh. Okay. I follow Claudia on Instagram, and while I know she is problematic, I do find her funny sometimes. But this book...was bad. I will say that I enjoyed her Bravo references, and I thought that the chapter on body image was perhaps the only honest and authentic section, and that part was well-done. But there were soooo many celebrity name-drops, soooo many references to her “fame”. She...is very fond of herself, that much is clear. I also did not feel that she fully felt bad about her tweets and problematic behaviors. She apologized and said that she was taking responsibility, but then she kept going on about how terrible cancel culture is, and idk. Wasn’t for me. Certainly did not make me like her more.

I've read my fair share of social media and influencer books and this one stands out as being particularly insightful. Claudia Oshry strikes a perfect balance of life story and examination of what it means to be a famous person. Where this book really shines is in the chapter diving into the difference between follower and fan, and the chapter on the rise of cancel culture. Fandoms aren't new, but this level of access to celebrity is. How these celebrities and influencers stay relevant while also steering clear of the tweet-storms and cancelations is like walking a tight-rope.
This book is perfect for anyone that has followed Claudia, or is interested in the turbulent path to becoming and staying famous online.
