i enjoyed reading this book, it had a great spooky element but was more on the adult side of literature. I enjoyed the stories and liked the way the author writes.

Thanks to Netgalley and the author for an ARC of this book. Wow. This was a really great collection of tales of folklore. I enjoyed them because most involved myths or legends I had never heard before. The author tells a story that will creepy you out and is very much believable. The first one, being my favorite. I hope to read so much more by this author. Have recommended this book to all my horror loving friends in my Facebook groups, Insta, and Twitter.

This is a fantastic, boxed set with an abundance of very unique tales that each immediately drew me in. Weird, quirky and eerie – all in the best of ways.

There are some good ideas here - the anthology approach to a series of monsters now living in Canada has great appeal. Sadly, the execution was not for me. An editor would fix a lot of what I had issues with - too many exclamation points, some grammar and spelling issues that are completely normal, but also completely fixable. Promising work, but needs to be refined.

I read probably 90% of the short stories, skipping around. I didn't want to read more after the first story, but I don't like reviewing based on only one, so I began again with Double Dog Dare as recommended by another reviewer. Unfortunately, the remaining stories didn't pull up the value for me.

The premise is interesting, and each story I read usually had something interesting as its basis. For example, Double Dog Dare has a ghostly dimension haunting tourists. That could be intensely horrifying, absorbing, and haunting after the read.

Where the collection failed is in how the stories were told. The best, kindest way I can describe the voice is juvenile, but a juvenile voice doesn't fit the subject matter. If the voice were applied to middle school fiction, that would be a much better fit. If a more mature, less ridiculous tone was applied to these stories, that would be a much better fit. For example, in Double Dog Dare, a father is watching his daughter trapped out far from the beach, about to drown. His thoughts and feelings during that time are nothing like what a parent would have in that situation. He doesn't even seem to be thinking about it. Perhaps this is intentional in a Roald Dahl, opposite of expectations way. That jarring effect, though, kills the horror effect. Roald Dahl pulled it off, often horrifying us without writing a so-called horror story. Unfortunately, that didn't happen here.

Adding to the odd juvenile tone is the amount of grammar errors and odd sentence phrasing. I understand that Netgalley reads are often not yet proofread and corrected by professional editors, so an occasional error is of no concern to me. However, with as many mistakes as are present in this collection, it seems that the book was published without any proofing done by the author, and that's disappointing. I hope this book is temporarily retracted to give the stories more development. I really do believe that there are good ideas in this collection.

I'm sorry, but I can't recommend this book as it is. If I hadn't accepted a free copy in exchange for a review, I'd have left it unreviewed as I dislike leaving bad reviews.

DNFing at 30%. There is nothing good here in my opinion. The humor is too childish and the stories are not scary at all. Not even a little. This book also needs a good edit. Giving three stars simply to be in the middle since I did not finish.

Awesome collection of short stories! While this is listed under "horror, it is not typical to what one imagines as horror. These are all much more clever than than that. We find that monsters need to eat, like gifts, have empathy and want to help and sometimes want to take. Sometimes monsters accept change, sometimes they resist. I guess they're just like us.
My favorite story was probably Double Dog Dare. This one was pure magic played on the face of a broken mirror. Brilliant!

This book is well written and has good character development I just couldn’t personally get into the story and found it a little bit of a struggle to keep reading. It’s a book of short stories that is almost akin to a scary stories to tell in the dark but a lot more graphic and grusome. Either way it just left a little lacking for me personally. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I really wish I could give this book zero stars because there was absolutely NOTHING good I could say about that book. I love a good horror story. I love anthologies. Horror anthologies are awesome. Usually. This one was... Exhausting. The only scary thing about this book was the grammatical and logical errors in every single story and the absolutely annoying italic written comments in bracets. They did little to the story and at some point, they were downright ridiculous.
The story were not scary and I was honestly bored after reading the thrid story. The only story I halfway liked was the one with the Wendigo. This book reads as if it was being written by an adult person who was trying to write like a teenager, because that was exactly how it read. Like trying and failing.
There might be someone who liked this book, but I definiet.y did not. The writing was very juveneile and the topics anything but fitting to a horror anthology. A horrible waste of my time and an utter disappointment.

I do love a good spooky short story book and although I loved the stories in this collection and really enjoyed them, there were a few loose ends that need to be sorted out. For one, I found that the stories were heavily focused on sex and sexual content, which the spooky stories really didnt need to build atmosphere or thrill. I didnt understand why it was added except that it is a book meant for an adult audience.

I also noticed alot of spelling and grammar mistakes in every short story. Although this didnt distract from the stories, I really dont think a published book should have that many mistakes. This even goes down to the fact that speech marks are incorrect in every statement.

I really did love the stories and found this book to be really good overall.
