I couldn't really get into this one. Maybe it's my fear of math! But perhaps fans of arithmetic will enjoy more.

This was such an odd book, but I am still thinking about it days later. Ian is able to perform magic when he gets math problems right, yet he uses that magic for himself and to help others. His brother is jealous that he does not have a talent of his own. Is it a believable story? Absolutely not. But it does make you think about what talents people have and when they can be use for good or "evil".

I love a chapter book with math as the focus but this was a bit of a miss for me. I did like the message that Ian needed to use his math gift to help others and that he had to make an important decision at the end.

There are not many books extolling the virtues of mathematics so it’s refreshing to see one written for kids. Ian finds that if he does problems correctly then magical things happen. He goes overboard when he makes math the only subject in school. The real magic occurs when his jealous young brother finds his own magic and is able to save Ian. A few places didn’t seem to feel as smooth, but overall this was a wonderful book with a lively main character. I wish my clothes would put themselves away!

I really enjoyed this book. I feel that children will be able to take a lot from this book and would really enjoy it. This was an easy to read story that overall I would recommend to many children. I felt that the main message of this book was brilliant.
