Reformed gangster, Jack Robinson, seeks out Frank's help in solving a murder. The murder victim had an abusive past with Jack's wife and Jack is concerned he may get blamed for the murder. The whole gang, including Mother Malloy and Sarah's parents, works together to discover the true murderer. Being the 24th book in this series, the pacing is a bit repetitive. There are several rehash/summary-so-far scenes which make the book drag a little. The murderer seemed obvious to me, but that may be because I've read the entire series and may just know where the writer intends to lead us. Still, it was enjoyable to check in with these characters.

I keep returning to Victoria Thompson’s Gaslight Mysteries again and again because the central mystery is often solved by several juicy rounds of gossip among high society people. Hearing Sarah, Frank, Maeve, Gino, and even Felix and Elizabeth discuss what they have learned about the people involved with the cases feels like having a natter with old friends. I look forward to reading more as the years go by.
