This was such a nostalgic read for me!

Magic Tree House was my favorite series to read as a kid, and it made me fall in love with reading! I was so excited to see that there is a graphic novel version of the books coming out, talk about some serious fan girling!

The illustrations were beautiful and it was so fun to relive Jack and Annie’s first adventure in the Tree House! This had all the same magic and fun as the first time I ever read this book and all the books to follow!

Very much looking forward to the next installment!

Remember Magic Tree House? Two kids find a tree house in the woods and are whisked away on magical adventures throughout time and space. I used to devour these books as a kid. I always loved the titles. They followed a theme for each arc. The first set was all about times of day, there was one set named after days of the week, stuff like that. I always thought that was cool. And the cover art! Man, I loved that.

So, when I saw that the first Magic Tree House book was being adapted into a graphic novel AND it was available on NetGalley, you bet your booty I snatched that up.

This was a really straightforward adaptation of the first book. Jack and Annie discover the tree house, they get transported to the time of the dinosaurs, they have adventures. That’s pretty much the formula for all of these books, but why mess with perfection? The tree house is filled with books of all kinds. I saw one that was just titled “Llamas” and I really hope to see that one someday. Anyway, Jack is flipping through a dinosaur book and conveniently points to a dinosaur and says “Man, I wish I was there.” The tree house is like “Cool” and starts spinning. They end up in dino times which is where I want to be all the time.

Jenny Laird is the adapter of this book and she does a fantastic job with the dialogue and all that, but I think there are tons of props to be had for the illustrators, Kelly and Nichole Matthews. The art is just superb. It’s cutesy and fun and bright. I mean, come on, look at those adorable kids! My only complaint is that the T-Rex wasn’t covered in feathers, but I will let that slide.

Overall, this is a fantastic book to pick up for a reluctant reader. It’s simple and has a very enticing premise. It’s also the perfect scratch for your nostalgia itch if you are in your late 20’s. 5/5, 10/10, highly recommended.

Make sure you pick up a copy from your favorite local indie on May 4, 2021.

Thanks Netgalley for the eARC!

This is a great book! I loved the original as a kid and this made the book more fun! The books are always a fun read. I can’t wait to recommend this book to kids. It’s going to be a great read for the less advanced adventure readers. And a great way to introduce graphic novels to a reader!

A fantastic graphic novel of an already popular series! The artwork is great and so well covered of the original book. This will constantly be out at the library I'm sure and I hope they make a ton of them :)
Thank you NetGalley!

Oh man, the nostalgia! I loved this series as a kid, although I never read the whole series. After picking up this graphic novel, I am going to be scouring the thrift stores for the books I don't have. It's just the cutest series!
I love Jack and Annie, their sibling relationship is shown so well even through a graphic novel. Jack is so protective over Annie and Annie just wants to have fun (and befriend dinosaurs).
The artwork in this book is adorable. I think it really fit the storyline. It's colorful and bubbly.
To me, a lot of the time the plot doesn't get explained well due to the nature of graphic novels being somewhat short. Already knowing what happens in this book, I think everything was explained well and the plotline was whole and nothing was missing to make it confusing or anything.
There were a few pages of the second graphic novel at the end and I just wanted to keep going! I can't wait for the next one.

Dinosaurs before Dark is the first book in the Magic Treehouse graphic novel series. Jack and Annie find a treehouse in the woods, and climb inside. It is filled with books. When Jack picks up a Dinosaur book and wishes he could see them, the treehouse begins to spin and they are whisked into the past, where they meet and learn about dinosaurs of different kinds.

This is a fantastic Children's graphic novel with cute and colorful illustrations that any child will love. Children will learn about dinosaurs while also experiencing a time travel adventure with Jack and Annie. The story is interesting and even as an adult, I loved it. I plan to purchase this series for my grandson. You can't get any higher praise than that.

I received a free temporary digital copy of this book from Random House. My review is voluntary.

Thank you to #Netgalley and Random House Children's for allowing me to read a digital ARC of Dinosaurs Before Dark (Magic Tree House Graphic Novel) by Mary Pope Osborne and adapted by Jenny Laird. This book will be published May 4, 2021. All opinions are my own.

On their way home one evening, siblings Jack and Annie find a mysterious and magical tree house full of books. After opening a book and making a wish, the two are transported to the prehistoric past. Now, they have to figure out how to survive and get back home.

This was a super fun graphic novel that was very quick to read. It instantly took me back to my childhood and reminded why I loved the Magic Tree House books. I love that they're getting a graphic novel update. The illustrations are colorful and vibrant and truly bring the story to life. This is a delightful read that is perfect for an elementary student and the young at heart.

AHHHHH I am so excited that these graphic novel adaptation of Magic Tree House are going to be out in the world!
I have no doubt my kids will be counting down the days until May 4th to get their hands on this book and it will introduce this magical series to an entire new set of readers who might be shying away from the chapter books simply because they aren't graphic novels. This is one of my favorite series to recommend and read aloud with young readers and families and now they are fantastic for read-to-self for beginning and emerging readers as well as those who are confident in their reading abilities.
"Dinosaurs Before Dark" is perfectly adapted with engaging illustrations and a well told graphic novel story.

I received an ARC of Mary Pope Osborne's Dinosaurs Before Dark Graphic Novel and read it with my two oldest daughters. - 5-years-old and 7-years-old - and we couldn't put it down. They are huge fans of Mary Pope Osborne and love the classic. first book in the Magic Treehouse series. Reliving the story in a graphic novel was a special treat for the kids that brought the story to life. To be honest, it was easy for me to get into the story quickly, too.

It was a fast, fun family read and I highly recommend it. They are already eagerly anticipating the author's second graphic novel, "The Knight at Dawn".

I strongly recommend this book for early readers and/or a good family read for kids like my 5-year-old who are in between a love of picture books and just starting to enjoy longer chapter books.

I was never much of a fan of the Magic Tree House books. I much preferred Junie B Jones. Currently it looks like the MTH has ended at book 55 which was published in 2016, but a whole new group will be introduced to these stories and characters through graphic novels. The Graphic novels don’t seem to be as easy as the chapter books were, but that may be a misconception by the author. The graphics were good and the story translated well. I can not wait to read the next one.

I grew up reading the Magic Tree House books, and to finally see them in graphic novel format is amazing! As the first foray into the series, Dinosaurs Before Dark easily captures the heart of the kids and their adventures, so I can only imagine that moving forward will be just as spectacular. The dialogue is definitely trimmed down some, but is bolstered by imagery and color fitting for Jack and Annie.

I adore the magic tree house series! As an elementary librarian, it’s one of my favorite series to recommend. There is nothing better than seeing a child get hooked on this series and keep reading. I am so excited to be able to share this reimagined graphic novel with my students and have the magic tree house series appeal to a new audience!

This was a wonderful adaptation of the original chapter book. The illustrations are bright and colorful and really engage the reader in the story. I feel like this will be a great introduction to chapter books for children who still enjoy picture books, but are looking for something a little longer.

This book was revived from its previous text version by making the story come to life with its illustrations. My students really enjoyed this book many years ago. Through this graphic novel, this series has been brought back to life in my classroom. My students enjoyed looking at the images and it helped them picture the words. I enjoyed the illustrations and the story of prehistoric dinosaurs. I look forward to more graphic novels in this series in the future! I can already predict that this graphic novel will be the first book grabbed off my bookshelf as soon as I add it to my classroom library.
