Perfect book for the stage of life I will soon be entering. There needs to be more education out there about menopause, including the pre and post phases. This book is a great start! It tackles other areas of health as well, including sexual health. So much helpful information in this book, I will definitely be referencing it in the future.

I am a huge fan of Dr Gunter. In this book she demonstrates a remarkable command of the subject matter, backed by extensive research and a deep understanding of the state of menopause research and information due to her being an OBGYN. The author's expertise shines through on every page, leaving readers with a sense of trust and confidence in the information presented. This should be a book every OB gives to their premenopausal patients.

There are so many "what's happening to my body" books for puberty but not (until recently) for perimenopause and menopause. This is a fantastic resource to address that gap. The author also has an excellent newsletter.

Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.

This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.

Let's be honest, every women should own The Vagina Bible. Dr. Jen Gunter did it again for women approaching menopause. We need science based information about our health and how things work. And why not learn about these topics in a fun, consumable way?! There is a bigger conversation to be had here, women tend to feel forgot while going through this stage of life. Enough! Let's get it out in the open and thank you D.r Jan Gunter for doing it in an amazing way.

Dr. Jen Gunter does a great job of importing a lot of medical information about menopause into your brain. I am glad that I have a physical copy of this book to reference as I start this journey sometime in the next 7 years.

The Menopause Manifesto is a superb source of information on everything and anything you ever wanted to know, including that which you did not know you wanted to know, about menopause, including historical information. The chapters are very short and well named making specific information easy to find. I very much enjoyed this book, learned quite a lot, and will be referring back to it should questions arise during my menopause journey.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books, Citadel for my copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

The Menopause Manifesto: Own Your Health with Facts and Feminism by Dr Jen Gunter

385 Pages
Publisher: Kensington Books, Citadel
Release Date: May 25, 2021

Nonfiction (Adult), Medical, Women’s Health, Feminism

The book is divided into four parts.

Part 1 – Reclaiming the Change: Understanding Your Body as an Act of Feminism
Part 2 – Understanding the Change: What to Expect When You’re Expecting Menopause
Part 3 – Therapy for the Change: Hormones, Diet, and Supplements
Part 4 – Taking Charge of the Change

This is a powerful book. The author has been a practicing gynecologist for more than twenty-five years. As a woman, she has experienced the effects of menopause and can write with such detail to make the reader feel they are not alone. She writes from a feminist perspective which shows the reader how much medicine has been directed toward men instead of women. I highly recommend this book to every woman, regardless of age.

I purchased this book for myself and recommended it for my public library. I doubt my high schoolers are ready to ready about menopause.

The Menopause Manifesto

By Dr. Jen Gunter

I have always felt that we as women, drew the short end of the stick. Not only do we have to deal with menstrual cycles, which, let’s be honest, can be wicked crazy, we carry, deliver and raise children, then to top it off, we have to deal with all that comes with menopause. It’s a wonder the we don’t up in a mental institution. I, being a women just shy of menopause in my early 50’s, I wish I would have read this book 10 years ago when I started peri-menopause.

This is a great book to learn about the changes that come with menopause and to help you manage it. I really enjoyed this book for that reason!!
If you are in any stage of this crazy life changing time of life that we can blame on menopause, I would highly recommend this book. I have both the audiobook & ebook for reference. This is definitely must have for anyone going through “ the change”.

I think this was one of the most comprehensive and easy to read books on menopause. Lots of useful tips and information, and reminded me of Emily Nagoski's 'Come As You Are.' Useful, informative, and accessible.

I was really interested in this book because of my current health problems, but it just wasn't my cup of tea.

This book is an amazing resource, but ultimately I did not finish it. I found it to be a lecture-ish in some parts and it bogged down after a while. Yet, being in perimenopause, my concentration is not what it was so maybe it's me. ;D

✋🏻. Read this if you are a woman. Please. This is too important for a witty review. This is some serious shit right here. We’re talking periods and menopause and breast cancer and osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.

“In describing menopause it’s not uncommon for textbooks and articles to use the word “exhausted” when there are no more follicles capable of ovulating…If we applied that same tone to erectile dysfunction, we’d expect textbooks to declare that the penis is worn out.” 🤯 🙊 🤣

Where in the hell was this book 5 years ago when I found myself in menopause due to premature ovarian failure (which I have now learned is not the correct term-it’s primary ovarian insufficiency) at 40 years old?? This book is a how to for menopause and every single woman should have a copy!

I never, ever imagined I’d be talking about my post menopausal journey. My circumstances land me in the 1% of women whose period stops before the age of 40, and boy was this book eye opening. It isn’t just about how women and their medical concerns have been dismissed for centuries. It is about taking control of your health, knowing all of the facts, and choosing the path that works for you so that you can (hopefully) avoid a devastating health crisis in the future. The Menopause Manifesto is just bursting with scientific data, facts, and suggestions to help you choose how to navigate this journey. Because of my age and at the expressed recommendation of my GYN, I chose HRT (hormone replacement therapy). Although that is a very personal choice, I stand by it…especially after reading this book. I am so happy to have finished it on the last day of breast cancer awareness month! Here here for Womens health. 🙌🏻

as a woman of a certain age, I just really apprecaited this book. So timely and important, and it's hard to believe that no one has written a book like the before for people who need it. Excellent resource.

I slept on The Vagina Bible (don't worry, I'll get to it one of these days), so I didn't want to let The Menopause Manifesto get past me. I'm old enough that my insides are clearly starting to gear up for this whole Perimenopause carnival ride, thanks human biology. This is a well-written, very easy to understand breakdown of the menopause process starting with how the reproductive system works, non-menopause reasons that can cause a problem, physiologic symptoms of menopause, what can be done when those symptoms become annoying/out-of-hand, health risks that can come from the change in hormone levels or treatments for menopause symptoms, etc. etc. Plus, Dr. Gunter is really funny. If you don't follow her on Twitter, go do that because she has no patience for bozos (which is important in these pandemic times). (As a note: the book does focus on cis-women's biology.)
