Holy cow, this book series is fantastic. Thrive is the third and final book in The Overthrow series. This was one of the best endings to a book series ever! By book 3 you are so invested in these characters' lives that you have to know how this is going to end. This was an edge-of-your-seat book!

If you haven’t yet picked up book #1 of The Overthrow Series by Kenneth Oppel, then WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? I was 100% hooked during book #1, Bloom, and then I felt so much closer to each character during my read of book #2, Hatch. So Thrive had a lot to live up to if it was going to carry the momentum of the series through to the very end. And MY OH MY, what an incredible finale to this three book sci-fi/horror series series!

Kenneth Oppel created an amazing world with Anaya, Petra, and Seth, building suspense and keeping me guessing throughout each book. I deeply appreciated the thoughtful questions about humanity, friendships, and emotions. We’re also forced to consider how our childhoods impact how we see the world and how difficult or easy it is to bond with others. So I appreciated the realistic questions in relationships and the philosophical questions hanging in the balance when it comes to things like differences between these particular aliens and what we’ve done as a human race OR about body modification vs. accepting who we are. It’s also natural to read this series and consider what we would or wouldn’t be willing to do to ensure the continuation of the human race – particularly in regards to environmental concerns. LOTS to discuss in this series and I highly recommend for children and teen homes and libraries everywhere!

Such a spectacular conclusion to this exciting series. I got the closure I wanted for this brave trio of kids but there was enough left to tease further stories. I highly recommend this whole series for YA readers and the adventurous MG reader too!

This was a great ending to this trilogy.
I really liked the way this series went. I enjoyed the environmental message, but I really liked that it wasn’t overly heavy handed. It felt like it fit into the book without being overwhelming.

I liked that the ending was wrapped up nicely, but also talked about the future that needed to happen in the world, what needed to happen after.

All in all, a really good middle grade series, with good world building, a lot of action and excitement, well written characters and a good message. Definite recommend

In this conclusion to the trilogy, we finally get to understand the plot to take over the world. We revisit Seth, Anaya, and Petra as they learn to accept their new powers and step into their roles with the government. It was exactly what I wanted in the conclusion (no cliffhangers here!). I was also really impressed by the easiness of gender inclusive terms for one of the characters. It wasn't preachy or overly explained - just commonplace. While I did finish with the actual hardcover book, I started reading thanks to Netgalley.

Thank you to HarperCollins and NetGalley for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
The third book picks up where Hatch left off. Terra, the rebel cryptogen that Anaya was communicating with, and 2 other cryptogens have landed on Earth with dire news – the invasion force will be waking in a matter of days. Terra needs to extract the genetic code for a virus that the rebels hid in the DNA of the hybrid children to help defeat the oppressive flyers. Anaya, Petra, and Seth are still changing, physically and mentally, and recovering from their ordeal in the bunker. Their powers continue to develop similarly to their cryptogen models. The teenage hybrids are essential to saving the Earth.
Thrive was a very satisfying end to this sci-fi trilogy. Like the previous two, it is fast-paced and action-packed! Although I am sad that this was the last book, I highly recommend it. You won't be disappointed!

This title was read by my husband who has read the other two books in the series. I tend to stop most series after the first book since I am always reading new things to recommend to my students. He was completely happy with the series' resolution. Pros to the book:
Realistic in that one of the parents of one of the main characters dies since not everyone could live through this invasion.
He liked that the three main characters are not all returned to normal at the end of the book.
The double-crossing and alliances even among the different alien groups (fliers, etc.)
The fact that it is sci fi for younger readers (but without making everything too happy). It is difficult to get sci fi that is not too complex for middle school readers, especially sixth graders.

He didn't mention any cons to me regarding the story or resolution..

The survival of earth is dependent on three teenage hybrids. It is what they believe and who they trust that will determine if we as humans will live or die.

This is a great book that truly is like no other and will captivate you through all the action, suspense and have you up reading well past your bedtime. This was such a good book I can't wait to read the first two books and see how it all started. I hope you all give it a chance this book is well written and is totally written for everyone to read and enjoy.

Thank you Harper Collins and NegGalley for sharing this book with me in exchange for an honest review. I devoured the first book of the series, was left hanging so had to read the second, and then even more cliff hangers led me to this final book in the trilogy! I loved the premise of this book and how it combined friendship and family with some really spooky science fiction! Overall 4 stars as it was a little drawn out for me.

A stellar conclusion to a meticulously layered trilogy. I can't wait to share book three with more readers.

Thrive is the conclusion to the fabulous trilogy by Kenneth Oppel. The author creates new beings, new worlds, and new technologies that are totally believable. In fact, I had to stop reading this book before bed because the story was leaking over into my dreams! This is one of the few series where the quality of the books don't decline over time.

This one ended up being quite the nail biter. I was amazed at how often my thoughts were racing as these young characters tried to decide who to trust, even amongst themselves. In the end though, they all showed tremendous courage to do what was right, even if that meant hurting people they loved, or putting them in harms way.

The three main character, Seth, Anaya and Petra grow so much throughout the books, but they really step up in this one. All three have their own struggles to overcome, not just the changes to their bodies, but also in how the world will perceive them in the future. Will they ever be accepted by humans and what might that look like. And even to some extent they worried about how the aliens viewed them and wether or not they would be accepted by them as well. It is a lot to place on young teens, and in some ways it is how most teens feel about themselves. I have so enjoyed watching these three live through their struggles and find their true selves underneath it all.

The rebels that show up from the alien force at the end of book two were really interesting. I enjoyed the fact that they were so different from us, yet strangely the same. Their technology was also quite interesting and seemed to have a biological basis to it. Their ship was probably the most interesting part of the whole story. I also liked how the relationships between the kids and the aliens developed over the course of this book.

Overall the ending of this trilogy was nicely done, although some of it was maybe a bit rushed towards the end. I was worried for quite a while that things were not going to work out for humans, especially when other countries where hesitant or refused to go along with the final plan to get rid of them. The final battle was well done as well and I am glad that the kids were a huge part of it.

Overall this was a great trilogy with lots of interesting characters and an alien species that I found fascinating. The plot was very well done as was the growth shown in all of the characters. This is a book that I would definitely recommend for any teen who enjoys science fiction and for those who want to give it a try.

I absolutely loved this sci-if middle grade series! The first book had me HOOKED, the second drew in more of the story and this one concluded the series altogether. I will definitely recommend this series to middle grade readers!

I am sad to part with this trilogy now that it is over. However, Oppel ended it with a bang. He does such an amazing job using vivid words to describe what is happening, what characters look like, and the emotions of each and every character too. The second book leaves you in a huge cliffhanger, and this one picks up right where you were dying to know what happened next, but as Oppel always does, he continues to build that suspense throughout the story. There were several times during the invasion on Earth that I did not think it would be merely possible to save the world. The deceit, violence, and lies were never-ending. I don't want to share too much, but this is a series that young readers will love and become fully immersed in. Hopefully, this leads to picking up more books by Oppel, too!

Thrive is a great conclusion to the story! All three main characters are true to themselves, but continue to grow into moral thinkers and leaders. An impossible task- t restore Earth after its been destroyed- is accomplished, mostly logicall conclusion. ANd interspecies communication is fascinating. Go Rebels!

A stunning conclusion to this trilogy! The fast-paced action kept me riveted, as we find out what happens when the cryptogens arrive. A battle of loyalty, wits, strength... who will prevail?

What an outstanding, exciting, edge-of-your seat book and series as a whole! It's science Fiction Middle grade which i think is hard to come by. The characters are what kept me so enthralled by these books. I love Anaya, Petra and Seth so much and I can think of so many kids at my library that would love this series! Environmental message that isn't too forced, great characters and an exciting story line...it was just great.

What a fitting end to a great series! Action packed but with tender moments as the kids figured themselves out. I loved that an epilogue was provided and we weren’t kept guessing.

Thank you for this eARC from Net Galley. Thrive by Kenneth Oppel is an outstanding, exciting, edge-of-your seat thrilling conclusion to this science fiction trilogy called The Overthrow. From the first book, I was captivated by this series. Initially I was drawn in by the idea behind it but was kept their by the interesting main characters. I don't want to give away too much of the book, but I can say that Anaya, Petra and Seth continue to face challenges in both their physical and mental abilities as well as their friendship. A great series I will certainly be adding to my school library and talking up for many years.

*Spoiler Alert: If you haven't read Bloom or Hatch, there will be some spoilers.*

Anaya, Petra, ,and Seth are deep into the invasion of the alien life forms that have created the hybrid children, sent plants and animals down to Earth, and are preparing to invade and take over the planet for themselves. The rebels, aliens who don't necessarily want to suck out all the humans' brains, are working with the children and their adult scientist mentors to formulate a plan to keep the invasion at bay. Anaya is telepathically communicating and working with a swimmer (who uses gender neutral pronouns), and Petra with a runner named Terra. Seth is distraught that Esta is being held with the other hybrids and might be charged with murder, in which he feels complicit. The ship that the alien rebels arrived on was badly damaged, so everyone is trying to find other downed ships that could be stripped for parts in order to make repairs. The best way to defeat the aliens seems to be to introduce a mutation into their bodies that turns the sounds they make against them, and combining this with a virus in rain to lower the aliens' immune system response will make it work faster. Things, of course, do not go smoothly. Seth runs into many problems when he is trying to save Esta, and the method of wiping out the flyers hits a lot of snags. The hybrid children also have to deal with the fact that their bodies have changed, and it's not easy living with a tail with a poisonous tip, feathered arms, or a body newly covered in fur. Will the hybrids, rebel aliens, and scientists be able to save the world from eminent takeover?
Strengths: For most of the book, I did NOT think it would be possible to save the world! We don't see a lot of the alien strategy in this book, but they had a solid start with sending the evil grass and ground worms to colonize the planet and sow destruction. The fact that the hybrids are teens saving the world, and they have the help of rebel aliens is a great device. There's plenty of action: flying, fighting, running, and generally surviving in a world gone mad. Having a three book set is perfect, the covers are fantastic, and the dystopian world and its inhabitants are beautifully developed.
Weaknesses: It always seemed like such a long shot that Earth would prevail, so the ending felt a tiny bit deus ex machina. I wish that some of the environmental message in the final chapters had been seeded more throughout the books.
What I really think: This might be one of my favorite new series. The books all came out in about a year (no small feat, I understand, but when a sequel comes out 12 years after the first book... the kids interested originally are all gone and the books are worn out!), is a genre that has a small but loyal following, and is structurally sound in plot, characters, and message. Feel like I need to buy two sets just in case, but probably won't.
