the only one stopping you from holding the moon in your own two hands is you.

i feel seen.
i've been a fan of the author for a long time and naturally i was excited to read her latest collection and it did not disappoint. i think i can safely say that i can add this to my favorite poetry collections because it has definitely left a mark on me.
i was pleasantly surprised by the tw list at the beginning of the book and that's one thing i appreciate, alongside the amazing illustrations that fit the theme perfectly.
the poems are empowering and beautiful and i found myself relating to most of them.
i enjoyed it and i also enjoyed the first volume so i can only say that i'm so excited to see what the series has in store for us.

Beautifully written, first of all. It was modern enough, yet Amanda Lovelace wrote it so that most, if not all, girls could relate no matter what age. So much women empowerment and positive vibes from this book, it was amazing. Also, I love that the author isn't afraid to talk about touchy subjects and things all women go through.

you matter.
This poetry collection was filled with very sweet words and was a little sad. I found a lot of joy in them. Loved the full page illustrations as well.

This was a wonderful book full of empowering poems. Featuring poems about how you are worthy of love, worth more than any diamond, and how those who see you as different it's their issue. If you are looking for a new book to fall in love with check this one out.

Let me tell you my favorite thing about this collection: I have seen many poets of late creating poetry of this style. Short and emotionally aggressive, adorned with sketches alongside them on the page. I love this one because of the element of kinship and sisterhood evident in every single poem. And, because I love a theme, the ongoing idea of "big sister" showing up every few poems made me genuinely happy. It's a call to action and empowerment, to personal strength and recognition of one's own power.

I will say that I didn't read the previous collection that this was created to follow, but I don't believe you need both to successfully read this one.

Lovelace has always been good at giving readers these small, compelling little poems that say exactly what they need to hear, and this collection is no exception. I particularly enjoy the conceit - a fairy tale, an ice princess, a love between sisters, examining the patriarchy. If you've enjoyed Lovelace's other work, you'll enjoy this.

This was such a quick read! Not my favorite by Lovelace (I will always love the first two installments of The Princess Saves Herself in this One the most) but by no means any less entertaining, thought-provoking, healing, inspiring and wanting me to go riot against the patriarchal forces in life.

There's something about Lovelace's writing that always draws me in and she finds the best way to describe some of the most universal feelings in different settings and worlds that make everything work perfectly together.

Can't imagine ever not picking up one of her poetry collections.

Shine Your Icy Crown by Amanda Lovelace is a collection of poetry and prose surrounded around the theme of siblinghood and taking power as a queen.

Thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Warning
This book contains the topics: child abuse, toxic relationships, sexual assault, eating disorders, mental illness, self-harm, sexism, suicide, trauma, and etc.

To admit this is my maybe third time reading a modern poetry collection but I enjoyed reading a collection of writings from the present century. There was something sorrowful yet sweet about Lovelace’s writing. To understand this collection, you do not need to have a sister, this collection becomes your companion guiding you. Perhaps, calling this collection, a book of advice would be more suitable. It contains both prose and poetic writing style matching with the themes, that are talked about.

If you do not get triggered around the subjects mentioned above, it is an intriguing book. It felt as if Lovelace’s is talking to their readers in a way they are talking to their sister. I am curious to read the first books in this collection as well in the future.

The themes I loved the most was on childhood and equality, the way Lovelace talks about feminists and self-loving was refreshing. At first, I was wondering if this book is going to be another judgemental feminist book. As a feminist, I dislike the term being used to hate other identities and marginalised groups and stay away from that kind of book unless I decide to analyse them for my blog. They tend to ignore all these wonderful identities LGBTQIA+ and all ethnicities, that exist outside of the prejudiced media outlets. It made me extremely hopeful reading the rest of the poems because the poet, indeed, breaks this horrible cycle of blaming others and whining like a teenager. In 2021, we need a change from this mindset that “men prey on women” and feminists only talk about how horrible men are. That is not what modern poetry is about, which is what Lovelace is trying to claim. I adore the way they didn’t focus only on what other judgemental people did to them but mostly on a universal sense of siblinghood, owning their self-power and exposing themselves honestly to the reader.

Perhaps I let you read two excerpts to let you decide:

"if your feminism comes to a screeching halt whenever you don’t like how tightly her dress hugs her curves… then stop to consider this: are you actually a feminist?"
-do better.

"stop judging a woman on
whether or not she takes
her spouse’s last name.

her decision,
her bussiness."

-doesn't she deal with enough already?

I did my best to stay true to Amanda Lovelace’s pronouns and the content of their book, Lovelace prefers (she/they) and it is important to value their non-binary identity as well.

I have been a fan of Amanda Lovelace since her first book, The Princess Saves Herself in This One, and having read all of her works, I can confidently say that Shine Your Icy Crown is my favorite. There are so many things I loved about this poetry collection, from the message to the relatability, but I will start with Lovelace’s extraordinary ability to weave existing stories into something fresh and innovative that still echoes the fairytales we’re all so familiar with. Lovelace is a master storyteller. Not only is the collection as a whole a beautiful tale of finding strength in yourself, but each individual poem speaks multitudes. I devoured this book in one sitting, but I took multiple pauses to set the book down and simply process the profound beauty of what I had just read. I loved how she collected common tropes from familiar fairy tales and unapologetically disassembled the fragments that still speak to misogynistic ideals and double standards and reorganized them into a powerful lesson for girls and women everywhere. All of her books paint a powerful portrait of the immeasurable inner strength women possess, and Shine Your Icy Crown’s lessons ring clearer than all. So many of these poems resonate so deeply with me that it felt as if they had been plucked from my own brian. As someone who’s grown up with two sisters, I love how this story accentuates the importance of keeping your sisters close and leaning upon other women to lend one another strength. Women are powerful on their own, but together, Lovelace asserts, we can be a force of nature.

Shine your Icy Crown is my first experience with Amanda Lovelace poetry. It's about how you need to be able and have the strength to stand up for yourself, and be true to yourself. And wow, I loved so much and it felt so much. I'll def pick up more poetry collections by Lovelace, cause' this was everything I didn't knew I wanted.

After finishing this one I'm craving more. And I feel like a reread will be something that I can stand by. My favorite poem was the one about how you need to be able to feel secure with yourself; that you can go to the cinema with yourself and eat at a restaurant by yourself. In this society when it's always on how many friends or followers you have, it feels so great to have that quote to look back to, and realize that no, you don't need to be around people all the time - sometimes you need to be with yourself. And that's a really nice thought.

As of the layout of the poems I did really enjoy the small "chapter" brakes with the illustrations in them. My only wish is that it could've been longer.

I really enjoyed this book, part poems part life advice. The only funny thing i found was the whole book is abiut being single and not marrying a prince but then the end acknowledges the author lives with their partner.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and will search out the rest in the series. It was a shame it was so short.

I received an early copy of this book from NetGalley.

If you like Amanda Lovelace’s other books of poetry, you’ll like this one as well. It follows the same form of self criticism/self-empowerment that her other books do.

However, it seems to get getting a little repetitive... while I like the message it is giving, I wish it there was more. Does the dense subject matter make up for the limited number of actual poems included in this book? Maybe, maybe not.

The artist included some beautiful double page spreads, but it is the same 2 images repeated through the book. I was hoping to see different images that rephrase hinted at their own story.

Other all, there was nothing I didn’t expect though I was left wanting more (not necessarily in the way the author intended).

Review:
If you have read any of Amanda Lovelace's poetry, you know what you are in for! Shine your Icy Crown is the sequel of Break Your Glass Slipper, second part of the poetry series You are Your own fairytale. This book is a perfect sequel of break your glass slippers, resonating the format of the first book.
Amanda Lovelace returns with her beautiful poetry, heartbreaking silences and amazing verse in her new book. The poetries are heart touching and mesmerizing, many of elements in this book are already familiar with her readers.
If you are a fan of her poetry, you may not be surprised by this book. This book is interesting, but it could not get through me like her earlier poetry collections did.

i loved this book and could really resonate with so many of the...quotes, and this book is very special to me because of the same reason BUT it’s just not poetry. these aren’t poems,,, they’re just feminist quotes. i went into it with the hope that i’d get to read feminist poetry, but i’m very disappointed in that aspect.

but i think as a collection of feminist, empowering quotes, this book is great! the illustrations are absolutely beautiful and i’ve bookmarked so many pages because some quotes are pretty empowering. however, the first book, ‘break your glass slippers,’ had trigger warnings in the beginning and i was hoping that this book would have them too, but it didn’t.

I love Amanda Lovelace. All her poetry I can relate to. I liked how this was about the bond of sisters, which I have with my own sister. I could see myself gifting her this when it comes out. The artwork was also beautiful.

I enjoyed this second installment of the You Are Your Own Fairy Tale trilogy more than the first one. This one was more general, broader, more widely relatable, and was the most uplifting of any of Lovelace's poetry collections, I felt. It warmed me and some of the poems were exactly what I needed to hear (read) at this time in my life, in our country. I've given 5 stars to several of her poetry collections but this one is 5+.

I've previously read Amanda Lovelace's poetry collection, The Princess Saves Herself in This One, and I wasn't blown away with it. But I decided to give her another chance with her newest collection, and I honestly think that this collection is a step up!

While this collection isn't mind-blowing, I do think the feminist themes shown through very strongly which I loved, and I loved the artwork!!! So many amazing quotes can be pulled from this collection, and if you are a fan of poetry or Lovelace's previous works, I think you should give this one a try!

I've enjoyed Amanda Lovelace's past poetry collections, and I've enjoyed this one too. Personally, I didn't get many new insights from this one so it didn't do as much for me as I would have hoped. But I think this will be very empowering for a younger audience.

I read Break Your Glass Slippers last year and I thought it showed a lot of growth and progress from the Women are Some kind of Magic series (which I loved). And I was excited to see how this new series would develop.
Shine your icy crown was equally as fantastic as the first book in this series. The illustrations were beautiful and fitted with the poetry so well. I was highlighting so many sections of this book, the words flowed off the page so beautifully. I think this series has a softer side to it than the authors previous series but it is no less powerful. Every page is bursting with encouragement and empowerment. I can't wait for the next installment!
