What’s not to love about pirates?! I’ve never read much about Blackbeard, although I do know enough Of him. So diving into these stories was just a fantastic adventure. I normally don’t often read short story collections anymore, but this one was a delight! If there’d be more in the future, I’d love to read more.

A whole lot of pirate in one book. These adventures of Edward Teach illustrate his evolution from simple whaler to fearsome scourge of the seas, in a dramatic fashion that hovers just shy of over-the-top. Enjoyed seeing the crew get into scrapes and wriggle their way out of them.

I had a disadvantage when I started this book in that I've read non-fiction historical books about Blackbeard and other well-known historical pirates, but I had to put that aside to enjoy this totally fictional story. Blackbeard is a popular character in pirate fiction, even appearing in one of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean movies and I accept that.

Having shifted my expectations, a few other names associated with the history of pirates also appear in this story, but the important thing is that the story itself started out well. However, when Anne Bonney was introduced, I started rolling my eyes. Believability was out the window.

The story started to drag a little after that and the plot about the keys didn't appeal to me. Too many elements just weren't realistic enough to hold my attention and things like people calling Edward "Ed" pulled me out of the era.

I hope there will be a second collection, because I need more! I love pirate stories, especially if they're featuring real pirates and this book... This book was everything I wanted and more.
I loved Edward from the very beginning and reading about his life and journey as a pirate was so entertaining. The book was written so real and lively, I could hardly put it down.

I received a free ARC by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
