A small-town murder and a murderer among them, leads to troubling hidden secrets uncovered. Death Gone A-Rye by Winnie Archer is the sixth book in A Bread Shop Mystery series.

It was a beautiful, promising wedding day and the Santa Sofia sheriff’s department has just been notified of the murder of a local school board member. Bride and sheriff Emmaline Davis had just had the wedding ceremony of her dreams and this couldn’t have come at a worst time. Leaving the murder investigation in the “capable” hands of Captain Craig York (this character is a bit of jerk), Emmaline hesitantly embarks on her honeymoon. But leaving her department to investigate, especially amidst such a prolific murder, Emmaline recruits the help of her best friend and now sister-in-law, Ivy Culpepper and things are about to get a whole lot more complicated in the murder department.

This is your typical murder-sleuth investigation, but somehow the story fell a bit flat. This story took me a while to get through, not for its difficulty but for its stretched and tedious twist and turns. It was difficult to come back to, and the flow was difficult to follow. Perhaps, had Emmaline been in town and it had been a best friend dynamic duo, then maybe this would have contributed some levity to the plot.

I had an unamendable disconnect to the main character Ivy Culpepper. As the story progressed, I gave this character the benefit of the doubt, but her investigative disposition was unremarkable. This character failed to capture my undivided attention and thus had me looking for some context among the supportive characters.

Not falling or failing in the monotonous department is Ivy’s neighbor, Mrs. Branford. This character was written with spirit and wit, which perfectly describes her supportive auxiliary role. A retired and beloved school teacher, Mrs. Bradford, gets to the bottom of a lot of the conflict following this investigation. The super-star and most interesting character of this entire mystery is the murdered victim, Vanessa Renchrik. As the mystery uncovers the peculiarities surrounding the murder, you realize that this character had a lot of issues and her proclivity to partake in dubious affairs was her undoing. I wish this character had some dialogue, but unfortunately, she was dead since the beginning of the book.

Overall, this book was not great, but not awful, it was medium.

Ivy Culpepper works in the Yeast of Eden’s
bread shop for Olaya Solis, owner, founder
and head baker. The shop is located in
Santa Sofia, California.
The shop is preparing its bake goods for
the school district Spring Fling where the
featured bread item will be the Vincent
van Dough focaccia.
While preparations are taking place the
President of the School Board ends up
dead and Ivy’s significant other becomes
the chief suspect.
Ivy begins her investigation to prove his
innocence.
Mix compelling characters, humor, secrets
from the past with a fast paced mystery plus
mouthwatering breads for a good read.
I enjoyed accompanying Ivy as she looked
into what really happened with her boss,
Olaya and her friend Penelope who happens
to be a youthful eighty-six years old.
I was happy that recipes were included at
the end of the story. Some of the recipes are:
Van Dough Focaccia Bread Art, Miguel’s
Savory Sausage, Kale and Potato Soup,
Olaya’s Hot Cross Buns and Rye Pumpernickel
Rolls.
Enjoy a puzzling mystery with delicious,
mouthwatering treats plus baking tips.
I volunteered to read Death Gone A-Rye.
It can be read as a stand alone as the author
provides enough backstory with the present.
Thanks to the Cozy Mystery Review Crew,
Net Gallery and Kensington Publishing for
the opportunity. My opinion is voluntary and
my own.

This is the sixth book in the A Bread Shop mystery by Winnie Archer.

I am not sure what my problem was but I had a bit of a tough time getting into this book. I don’t think I found my stride until about 20% in. It has been awhile since I read a Bread Shop mystery and I think I just had to catch my breath and discover where are the characters were now in relation to the last book I remembered reading.

The book starts off with Em and Billy’s wedding. And since Em is the law enforcement person and she is off on her honeymoon, Ivy begins to dig into the mystery that unfolds. Once you get into it, this is a pretty good read. The mystery was well-crafted and the cast was easy to resonate with. Definitely a great series to dig into.

Definitely pick this up if you are a cozy mystery lover.

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title. Opinions are completely my own.

Death Gone A-Rye by Winnie Archer is the 6th in the Bread Shop Mysteries series. No sooner than Ivy’s brother says his “I do” to her best friend Em, the bride receives notice that a murder has occurred in town. Not quite trusting her second in command, Em asks Ivy to help investigate while she is on her honeymoon. The murder victim, an up and coming politician, had no shortage of frenemies. So why is the detective in charge so set on pointing the finger at Miguel? Ivy has no choice but to investigate!

Suspects abounded in this mystery with strong motives, yet I didn’t see the end coming! Just the way that I like my mysteries. I really enjoy this down-to-earth protagonist and the cast of support characters - especially feisty octogenarian Penelope Branford, who has more tricks up her sleeve than a CIA operative. The diverse ethnicities and races work well in this series and while subtle are a welcome addition to the cozy mystery genre. This is the perfect mystery to while away a lazy afternoon. (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy and all opinions are my own.)

In the seaside town of Santa Sofia a killer is trying to get a rise out of the bakers apprentice Ivy Culpepper. Vincent Van Dough foccia is being touted on Instagram as the best thing since sliced bread. But one person won’t be tasting the bread an ambitious school board president Nessa Renchrick has been murdered like the rest of the town Ivy is shocked. But she is also surprised to learn her beau restaurateur Miguel Baptist’s had his own fling with Nessa backin the day. Now it’s up to Ivy, her boss Olaya Solis and 86 yr old Penelope Branford to separate the wheat from the chaff to determine who the culprit is. A fun mystery with exciting characters an excellent read.

This is the 6th release in the delightful Bread Shop Mystery series by cozy author Winnie Archer. I recommend the entire series for your reading enjoyment. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity. My review opinion is my own. This is a fun series to read that had great charcters and always a fun sleuth.

Our protagnist is attending Billy and Em's wedding which goes off beautifully until a murder is announced. With Ivy, Olaya and Mrs. Branford on the case many red herrings and clues abound as they track down the rightful suspect. One of their own friends is suspected of the murder and they are determined to clear his name.

I love the humor in this series and the great well crafted charcters. The sleuth kept me guessing to conclusion which was a pleasing enjoyable read. Of course the bread is center stage and wonderful to read about .

This is a great addition to this fun series. I highly recommend the entire series. The bread receipes that are included in the book are wonderful and appreciated by readers.

Death Gone A-Rye is the sixth book in the A Bread Shop Mystery series by Winnie Archer. I had not read the previous books in the series, but was easily able to read this as a standalone mystery.

I loved this book! The story was great and had a lot of depth. The characters were well developed with a very interesting storyline. I thought the mystery was great and fun to try to solve.

I look forward to reading the other books in this series!

I'm so grateful to Winnie Archer, Kensington Books, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this ARC ebook in exchange for my honest review.

Book #6 of the Bread Shop series opens with Billy and Emmaline's wedding. The perfect day is marred by the news that the local school board president has bee murdered. Emmaline's newly hired captain will take the reins of the investigation while she goes on her honeymoon. Of course, Ivy gets involved when the clues get a little too close to home.

This series gets better with each book. For some reason the bread "spoke" to me in this one. I was particularly intrigued by the focaccia. Olaya has such a way with her bread. Everything sounded wonderful and I regret that i can't eat bread.

I am so pleased that Ivy and Miguel have settled into a stable, mature relationship. I am happy that even some distressing news did not shake their foundation.

Penelope Branford is one of my favorite mature characters. She amuses me when she is playing the poor pitiful elderly woman when we all know she could probably do circles around us all.

I think the children in the book hit me pretty hard. I was really invested in their storylines. The incident with immigration was spiteful and hurtful.

The murder victim was so disliked that it was hard to pin down the culprit. I was shocked when the person was revealed. The reasoning was sound and most unexpected.

I enjoy this series and highly recommend it.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for the opportunity to read this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Death Gone A-Rye by Winnie Archer is the 6th in her Bread Shop Mystery series; this is this first I have read of the series and I easily followed along. I loved the story and intend to begin with the first one in order to know the characters even better.
Santa Sofia, California is the setting for this series, in a seaside town in the northern part of the state. The characters are as engaging as the super cute cover ! I especially enjoyed the relationship between Ivy and Miguel. The murder plot was well executed with twists and turns to keep things hopping. Cozy mystery, fast pace, great characters and part of a series---all things I enjoy. Oh, the recipes look amazing-- I am making Miguel's soup and the pumpernickel rolls this weekend, I can hardly wait.
I requested and received an ARC of this book---Thank you NetGalley, and Kensington, All opinions are my own, I always review books that I enjoy. #DeathGoneA-Rye #NetGalley

This is a cozy mystery, and this is the 6st book in A Bread Shop Mystery series. I have read and review the first book in this series. I really love this series. I feel all the characters in this book are developed, and I really love Ivy and Olaya. Ivy always puts in nose into the mysteries around town, so went there was a murder she as to put her nose into. Olaya is the owner of the bread shop, and she is so funny and a great character. I love that this book kept you guessing who did the murder right up to the end. I did guess who did it way better it was revealed, but that did not that anything for the story for me. This was a fun cozy mystery to read, and it was really well written. This story is driven by the characters in the story more then the storyline. If you love cozy mystery with food and great characters then this is the book for you. There is also some bread recipes included in this book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Kensington Publishing Corporation) or author (Winnie Archer) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

This is the sixth Bread Shop Mystery. Each one seems to get better. The book opens with a wedding. Sheriff Emmeline and Billy Culpepper are getting married. At the reception, they find out the school board president has been found dead. Emmeline and Billy go on their honeymoon leaving the new to the force Captain York to investigate. Before she leaves Emmeline hedges her bets and asks Ivy to keep an eye on things.
Ivy Culpepper is our amateur sleuth who does a better job of keeping an open mind toward suspects than Captain York does.
The deceased was not a nice person and there are an increasing number of suspects as Ivy looks into the situation.
There is an intricate web of secrets and lies surrounding dead woman. The end story was sad. So many lives affected by the evil of one woman.
The bread in the story is amazing. I love the people in Ivy’s life - Olaya, Mrs. Bradford, Ivy’s father and Miguel. They form a supportive network that helps this mystery series have depth and meaning.
I am always in favor of reading a mystery series in order since I prefer to see the relationships develop over time. However, this one could stand alone and you would still have a good feel for the characters and continuing story.

I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review. This is the sixth book in her A bread Mystery Series. I have read the first book and then this one. You do miss a few things for not reading them in order but she does a good job of giving clues for those who haven't read them in order to figure out what has happened in the past.

This book is about a murder of the School Board President and who did it. The President was not a very liked person and she wasn't a nice person in general. You will find out all about the reasons as you read the book. The sheriff is out of town on her honeymoon so the captain is in charge of the investigation and has a one track mind and doesn't look at all the clues. Ivy is looking into things for the sheriff and keeping her posted since she is now the sister-in-law.

The best part is the recipes in the back of the book and the detail that goes into the book. I gave this book 4 stars. I need to go back and read the rest of the books.

Ah, the smell of fresh bread combined with a top notch mystery in a lovely setting and you have the perfect cozy escape. Ivy's best friend Em, the chief of police has just married Ivy's brother and are off on their honeymoon. Before they leave town the not very pleasant school board president is bumped off and the investigation will be conducted by the new Captain on the force. Unfortunately he has made up his mind that Ivy's boyfriend Miguel, is the killer. He had some history with the victim and the Captain puts him as the prime suspect. Case closed. Em had doubts about him and asked Ivy to keep her in the loop. Ivy wastes no time doing her own sleuthing with the help of her boss at the bakery, Olaya Solis and Penelope Branford. Together they make a formidable team.
The charming California coastal setting and the great cast of regular characters are perfect and the mystery is complex, keeping even the sharpest reader guessing. Even though this is the sixth book in the series, it works fine as a stand alone. Just be prepared to settle down with the rest of the series and have a binge read. It's that good.
My thanks to the publisher, Kensington and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Death Gone A-Rye by Winnie Archer is the 6th book in A Bread Shop Mystery series, and is quickly becoming one of my favorite series. This series always makes me hungry, between the bread and the Mexican food. The town is getting ready for the school district's Spring Fling, when the school board president is found dead, and Ivy's boyfriend Miguel is the prime suspect. This book had more twists and turns, and an excellent mystery that kept me reading. I found this book to be a quick read, with a well developed plot and characters. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series, it can't come soon enough. If you love cozy mysteries, I strongly recommend this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

The school board president is murdered, just as Emma line the sheriff, is being married to Ivy's brother. They are headed for their honeymoon and Ivy is on the case. The new captain, however, does not want Ivy involved especially when his main suspect is Miguel Baptista. With the help of Penelope and Olaya, Ivy works to find all the suspects and there are a lot!

Great read, fun plot and wonderful characters. A great addition to the series!

I arrived late to the party in Winnie Archer's series set in a bread Shop in Santa Sofia, Northern California, starting with book four, Flour in the Attic, but I still jumped at the opportunity to read this one, Death Gone A-Rye as I enjoy a well written cosy, and this looked like it fitted the bill perfectly.

Known for its mouthwatering traditional breads, the Yeast Of Eden owned by Olaya Solis, has created their version of a Vincent van Dough focaccia for the school district's Spring Fling. Baking assistant Ivy Culpepper is looking forward to the event, as well as attending the wedding of her brother Billy and his fianceé, Ivy's best friend, Em. But her enthusiasm rapidly wanes when she learns that ambitious school board president Nessa Renchrik has been murdered. Worse still, her boyfriend, restaurateur Miguel Baptista had a relationship with Nessa years ago, making him the main suspect.

Death Gone A-Rye was a compelling, charming, and fun cosy read. Winnie Archer did a fantastic job providing some backstory, making this a great standalone novel though you'll want to read the other instalments. I was sold from the very beginning, with its solid characters, great writing and a marvellous mystery that provided a good sprinkling of clues to satisfy even the most painstaking and diligent armchair detective. The cast was quirky, and busy photographer, artist and protagonist Ivy, was spirited, peppy, curious and amusing, and she had a lot going on in this story.

There was a large number of characters in Death Gone A-Rye but I think I just about managed to keep track of all of them without being overwhelmed! Ivy's trusty sidekicks, Penelope Branford, an eager, retired English teacher, and Miguel made a welcome return as did Ivy's adorable pug, named Agatha. The mystery itself was well done and there were enough red herrings and twists to keep me guessing the culprit's identity.

Overall, a marvellous cosy and a very worthwhile read. I can't wait to see what Winnie Archer has in store for Ivy next, in book #7, A Murder Yule Regret.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Gods enough but not great. The book is overly worst and hard to get into. I'm not sure if I will read anything else by this author.

Miguel may have had an affair with Nessa ten years ago but he wasn't the one who murdered the hateful school board president and Ivy's going to find the real villain! Set in a delightful small town and in the bakery owned by Olaya, this latest installment in a series will be perfectly fine as a standalone. Cozy readers know that more than one person disliked Nessa. The real crinkle here is that Em, Ivy's best friend and the police chief, is on her honeymoon after marrying Ivy's brother, leaving a deputy who doesn't appreciate Ivy in charge of things. No matter, Ivy, Olaya, and the delightful Penelope will keep going. This has some good twists that will keep you guessing. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Oh-and recipes !
