This book follows a complicated love triangle and it’s repercussions for the people involved towards the end of the 20th Century. It did suffer for being the third in a series and I wish I’d waited to read the other two first. Hal and Angela are married with a family when he undertakes an affair with Angela. This novel follows the aftermath of this affair and its repercussions on wider family. Hal is back in the family home, but his affair cannot be forgotten and he has to face the impact it’s had on the whole family. Wife Jo can see their marriage crumbling before her, but does she want to salvage it? I found it very believable that the betrayal has set her back emotionally, it’s another loss to add to her previous loss and all those original feelings come up again. She needs to sit down and think deeply about what she wants for the rest of her life. I loved how this soul searching led to a revival of her love of travel and her trip to Northumberland is just the first step in living a life that’s more fulfilling for her.
The author also follows Angela’s story and she is heartbroken to lose Hal. I felt for her, even though my heart was with Jo, she is distracted by an opportunity and doesn’t really stop to fully think it through, instead she jumps straight in. The journey took an unexpected turn for her and the man she is with.
This book was clearly written by a sensitive and empathic author. She took such great care with her characters and much of the their emotional lives rang true.

I actually held off on this review because I felt like I needed to give the book more time to percolate but unfortunately I could not make myself love it. This is definitely for a different reader though as the writing was beautifully done.

A story of complicated love, a longing for freedom and blended families. A brilliantly engaging novel that keeps you gripped til the end. As Jo reflects on her early widowhood and an impending breakdown of her current marriage can she find love again and can her current husband be happy in his search for solitude.
