An original, spiralling, twist of a mystery thriller. I put my precious weekend on hold because I couldn't put it down. It was so worth it!

Absolutely brilliant. It took me one lovely Sunday afternoon on the settee under a blanket to devour this. A clever story with brilliant characters who you will want to know more about. I love the little drip drip hence me not being able to put it down!

The Dinner Guest has potential, but the execution of an intriguing premise fell flat for me. The characters’ behavior didn’t always seem very consistent, it took a long time to build up to anything tense or fast-paced (it’s an exposition-heavy narrative on the whole), and the ultimate revelations of secrets and mysteries weren’t as twisty or surprising as one might hope for in a thriller, while still being rather far-fetched. (Plus, I gotta say, while everyone is, understandably, terrible here, I really didn’t love the way bisexuality is treated/used in this plot.) The commentary on class and privilege is heavy-handed, but that’s not my biggest problem with the book. Mostly it just felt sort of dull and failed to engage or hold my attention - exactly the opposite of thrilling.

When Matthew and Charlie bump into Rachel in town, Matthew is only too happy to invite Rachel to join their book club. Suddenly she’s part of their lives—not to mention that of their adopted son. We know that Charlie shares everything on Instagram and that Rachel appeared out of the blue; this was never going to end well. Each chapter brings someone else’s point of view and takes place at a different time relative to the inevitable murder. The story is compelling and well told.

There’s a lot of suspense, but it isn’t the suspense of impending danger or fear that someone is about to get murdered—that happens right up front. It isn’t really a criminal investigation, because the police investigation of the crime feels sort of peripheral. Instead, it feels like a domestic suspense novel in which we are really just watching everyone’s possible motives unfold in slow, not entirely linear, motion. There are ultimately very few characters involved, and each has a plausible motive not just for committing the crime but also for covering for the others. I found the cleverness of this setup more interesting than learning the particular solution the author was going to choose.

The ending is horrifying, because we are left with disturbing glimpses of how the characters respond to the situation and then left to imagine the rest.

This was a real let down. I was e petting a thrilling suspense with twists and turns that would keep me reading until the early hours one night. Instead I persevered in what felt like a book that would never end, with dull characters who all had secrets but as they were all so unlikeable I didn’t care about their secrets or the reveal, some weren’t entirely surprising either. A plot line that could’ve been so much more and unfortunately just didn’t rise to the occasion.

Lots of twists with this one - I kept thinking I knew what was happening only to turn the page and prove myself wrong.
Unfortunately I had a hard time powering through this one though because I didn't care much for anyone in the story - I'm not sure if all of the characters were really that unlikable or if I was just in a mood.

This book was full of suspense and I couldnt stop reading it. You think you know whats going on but really you dont. So many twists. The writing was executed beautifully and I cant wait to read more of his books.

This one was just okay for me. All the characters were millionaires and lacked intelligence. Too many secrets in a short span of time. I didn’t really care when each one was reveaLed. Not my favorite.

Although a good novel and parts I did enjoy but I found the writing slightly frustrating in that it dragged on a bit for my liking.

The tension was good and I did want to know what happened Ed.

It was well written but unfortunately I didn’t connect with the characters therefore found it a bit of a chore to read.

3 stars.

I was a bit disappointed with this as I was expecting it to be a big wow factor of a read. Don't get me wrong, it was still a great story and I found it interesting and enjoyable. It just wasn't fantastic. I guess I was expecting a bombshell somewhere but it just didn't happen.

It did keep me wondering how it was going to play out and the story didn't give away who had murdered Mathew before it was ment to. So thumbs up for that.

I'm glad I read it but I don't think it's one I will remember too well.

Still, I would read more from this author.

This book was so strange. I kept reading because I wanted to find out who killed Matthew and what Rachel's motive was but I was super disappointed in how this ended. Really? The whole thing was farfetched.

Matthew was a jerk, Titus, the couple's son, was a complete spoiled brat, and Charlie was the only moderately likable character.

When the confessions started coming, they were long and rambling and left me rolling my eyes in parts. I was really hoping for a better conclusion. Kept me entertained almost to the end until the mystery was revealed.

Perfectly enjoyable read. Easy page turner, and surprising ending. Though this feels a bit done at the moment, I liked this a lot!

The Dinner Guest by B P Walter is a very strange story, with a complex ending. Charlie and Matthew are married and Titus is their adopted son. Both men are from very privileged and wealthy backgrounds. Rachel wants to befriend the couple and joins their book club and becomes part of their lives. Charlie becomes suspicious of Rachel and Matthew and events unfold to the fateful dinner party, when Matthew ends up dead but who is the murderer?
A very intriguing and interesting story.
Highly recommended

Loved this one. It is brilliantly written. You start off assuming you’ve figured it all out but you are in for a surprise! The revelations are well executed and the book keeps you on your toes! There are way too many secrets and lies in this book and it gets super messy before it clears up. All in all a great fun read

On the menu for the main course is revenge served cold with a side of betrayal and it will be delicious! If you’re looking for a fast paced thriller that will keep you guessing until the end, look no more. A murder, a confession and hidden secrets are the perfect ingredients in this twisty tale of deception. I enjoyed every savory, satisfying morsel of this suspenseful smorgasbord. This thriller definitely quenched my appetite! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A Version of the Truth is my favorite by this author so far but this was pretty good as well.

I like the way this author writes and the characters he creates are quite good (though deplorable in this instance). The premise was great and it did suck me in quickly but it was a slow burn. The alternating narration was handled deftly and there were several twists (most I think the seasoned reader will see coming).

There are definitely moments that you will have to suspend belief, bit of far fetched craziness with Charlie’s father who is a “cleaner”. The excessive wealth and brand name dropping grew tedious at times. Also the way Titus (not sure if there’s meaning behind that name but odd choice) is written is unbelievable. I have kids and granted we are not in the 1% but teens don’t act like that.

So there are definitely some pros and cons but I had to finish this and see what happened. I will always check out for this author’s books and look forward to the next. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and HarperCollins UK for a copy in exchange for a review.

What a strange book. Strange in a very good way I should clarify, because there were points in this books where I couldn’t put it down. The twists and turns were masterfully written and there were many I didn’t see coming.

It was far fetched at the climax but honestly that is what I expect from a good thriller novel and I would definitely read it again.
