Oh my wow! How did I wait so long to read this? The twists, the turns, the suspense, the mystery, Having most of the questions answered, but having more and needing the next book.

This was a fantastic book with fantastic characters set in the southwest. I really can't say much about this one without giving things away. The characters are fantastic and I could barely put it down. It was a thrill ride that I would take again. The story has a natural tension and a mystery that will have you thinking you have whiplash.

I look forward to a follow up to get more information about this character. Garrett could easily develop a following like Jack Ryan or Jack Reacher. I can't wait for more.

I received a copy of this through NetGalley and highly recommend this.

WOW! Just WOW!! From the first page this book had a hold on me and didn't let go, so hang onto your seat.

Have you ever done something nice for someone, not expecting anything in return, and have it backfire on you so that you wish you'd never done it? That's the situation former U.S.A.F. pararescue jumper Garrett Shepherd finds himself in. He finds an almost dead stranger in a remote part of the desert and takes him to a hospital, saving his life. Several years later when the rescued man dies, that Good Samaritan act comes back to haunt Garrett.

This suspense/mystery is one heck of a ride for the reader. Once Garrett accepts the strange offer, and sets out to fulfill the deceased man's final wish, the action and tension only let up a few times, and then just long enough for me to catch my breath, only to have it taken away again. The surprises and plot twist keep coming right up until the end. I didn't want to stop reading this book because I HAD TO KNOW what was going on, and try to figure out who was behind it and why.

The ending is complete and satisfying, but there's still room for a possible follow up book, which I'd be more than happy to read. (hint hint for the author). If you enjoy suspense books this is one for you.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in my review are my own.

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished is a suspense novel written by E. James Harrison.

Summary: Garrett Shepherd saved a man’s life. Five years later that man is dead.

In his will, a proposition for Garrett-revenge.

Garrett agrees to help. He thinks he is prepared and has taken the proper pre-cautions.

He’s wrong.

Thrust into danger, it will take every bit of his knowledge as a former military pararescuer to survive.

My Thoughts: Wow. I thought I had kind of figured out which way this book was going, and bam-there was a major plot twist. I literally looked at the book and couldn’t believe I was only 30% of the way through.

The plot is quite unique, there is tons of action, mystery, and intrigue, and some really interesting characters along the way.

I enjoyed this book very much, and it is definitely worth the read!

I would like to thank Covenant Communications for providing me with a free digital copy of this book in exchange for my review. Thank you!

Garrett did not have any ulterior motives when he saved a stranger's life. He was only trying to use his skills as retired military for the good. When he was contacted several years later and told to fly to LA because he was mentioned in the man's will, he was shocked. He was offered a reward, but then additional money to fulfill a task that was not exactly straight forward. What is he going to do?

There are SO may ways that this book could be inadvertently spoiled, so I am going to keep to the facts for my explanation and simply rate elements.

5* for suspense. This book was FULL of plot twists. Like ones that I never saw coming. At one point, I thought the author was kidding. He was not. There was very little I figured out.

5* for the characters. I really liked the good characters. I do think it was a positive representation of the Native American community. I felt like it was honoring to the service of the military. And there were a few characters I did not enjoy - pretty sure I was supposed to feel that way.

5* for the setting. Great idea to have a suspense book take place basically in no-man's land.

5* for the unique plot. Normally one does not think that hard times could come as the result of a good deed.

3* for themes. This is purely my personal preference. Redemption and revenge were both elements. Revenge was emphasized more. That left me feeling a bit empty at the end.

22/25 stars ends up with a 5* average which I do think is what this book deserves overall. Would I read more by this author? Probably. But I did feel a sense of disappointment. While I know that all wrongs will not be righted, I was wishing there was more hope. Maybe that was not possible due to the focus of this book.

Thanks to Covenant Communications and to NetGalley for letting me read a copy of the book. Clearly I have my own opinions and did not hesitate to state them.

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished by E. James Harrison

Excellent action-packed suspense-filled story that I could not put down. I would love to see Garrett and perhaps Klah solving another crime together in the future!

What I liked:
* Garrett: a good man with the perfect skills to solve the problems he was faced with. Smart, savvy, serious, and savage when necessary.
* The premise, plot, and story as it was told – really kept me reading!
* Klah Nez: interesting and intriguing police officer – would love to learn more about his heritage
* Kevin and his wife
* The locale of most of the story
* The unflinching look at the bad guys
* The twists and turns and surprises
* The feeling that at times I was right there trying to stay alive with the characters
* That the instigator of Garrett’s quest, Edwin Sprague, was not all that his family thought he was
* That the bad guys were, for the most part, caught or otherwise dealt with
* Wondering if this was a standalone story or if perhaps the beginning of a series
* All of it really except…

What I didn’t like:
* The loss of innocent lives…more than one that made me sad
* Knowing that some of the bad guys might get away with what they did

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Definitely!

Thank you to NetGalley and Covenant Communications for the ARC – This is my honest review.

The description of this book sounded interesting so I thought I’d give it a try even though the author’s name wasn’t familiar (turns out I have read another book by him though).

It took a little bit to grab me, but once it did I was intrigued. Garrett was a great main character. He seemed selfless and brave and had many skills from his career that kept things exciting.

I was kept on my toes most of the story, which I appreciate in a mystery/suspense.

There wasn’t a lot of closure. Hopefully it was setting up for a sequel.

I love mystery and suspense, especially when it keeps you wondering who really is the "bad guy." This book did a great job of that. The characters were strong and believable. The hardships they faced looking for the missing car kept me on edge and turning the pages. How they figured out what to do next was amazing and I could easily follow their jumps in logic and deduction. I couldn't read it fast enough and stayed up way too late finishing it.

I haven't read this author before, but I really liked this book. Lots of twists and turns. I'm going to have to read more by him.

No language or sex. But there was a lot of violence, blood and some very unfair deaths. I'm not complaining about that, it made the story more believable. It was just a shock at times. Recommended to 16+ who like military-style action and fighting the bad guys. I give it 5 stars.

Garrett Shepherd's life has suddenly changed, all because of a decision he made 5 years ago. He brought a dying man to the hospital after finding him alone and dehydrated in the desert in Southern Utah. Little did Garrett know that that man was wealthy Edwin Sprague, and now Garrett has inherited 5 million dollars, to repay for the 5 additional years Edwin received. But now Edwin (via video recording) and his widow are asking Garrett to find Edwin's lost vehicle.
Once Garrett agrees to do it his life is thrown upside-down. He sets off for the desert on the same road he took 5 years ago. After a frightening couple of days, where two of his good friends are murdered, and he is in a car accident, he ends up in the hospital. He survives multiple attempts on his life, a gun-fight, hikes in the desert, and discovers who is behind all of it.
This is a very engaging read with lots of adventure, intrigue, and a touch of romance all to make the perfect get-away book. It's the perfect book for anyone that loves adventure and mystery.

A long-shot search-and-recover mission turns deadly and nothing and no one are quite what they seem.

Garrett initially declines the project, which is a point in his favor. The reasons he changes his mind are also points in his favor. He is an able, trustworthy protagonist, the one fixed point in a shifting landscape.

I like: the desert Southwest is as much a character as the people are; strong first sentence; short chapters; moves right along.

I willingly overlook: some of the relationships seem inconsistent; some characters are said to be very smart but shown to be the opposite.

Thank you to NetGalley and Covenant for the free copy I received in exchange for an honest review.

Garrett Shepherd, is barely making ends meet, when he receives a call from a lawyer, his life is about to change. He would have never guessed, that helping a man, in the middle of nowhere, would find him in a lawyers office, as part of that man's will five years later. There is plenty of suspense, that kept me turning pages. This novel is fast paced, and had quite a bit of action.

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished by E. James Harrison, 270 pages. Covenant Communications, 2021. $17.

BUYING ADVISORY: HS - ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Living his normal life, Garrett gets a weird phone call that changes his life -- and makes him several million dollars richer. Five years ago, Garrett saved Edwin’s life. Now, Edwin is dead and has left Garrett money in his will along with the promise for more if he can accomplish the impossible: track down the information Edwin was nearly killed over. The payout is tempting, but it comes at the risk of lives.
With lives on the line, anything less than suspense and action would be a disappointment; Harrison arranges both without making the antagonist’s plot obvious, making both the protagonist and the reader puzzle out what’s going on and who’s on which side. Most loose ends are neatly tied, though a couple unanswered questions leave room for a potential sequel. Overall, I enjoyed my time reading Garrett’s story as it gave me all the excitement I was looking for when I picked it up. The violence rating is for gun use, murder, and blood and gore.

Perfect blend of suspense, mystery and intrigue.
Harrison has done a fantastic job of blending mystery and intrigue with just the right amount of suspense to keep you totally engaged with the story. Edwin was beaten, drugged and left in the desert to die. At almost the last minute a pararescue jumper, Garrett, hiking through the desert finds him and saves his life only to vanish back into his life in the air force. Five years later Edwin dies leaving a large amount of money outright to Garrett with the possibility to greatly increase the amount if he will take on a mission to solve a mystery. But what appears to be a simple mission is actually something that could cost lives. Someone does not want that mission to succeed and a mole is feeding information to those people. What does will it take to succeed or will it ultimately fail? This book is all but impossible to put down. A great read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
