This is the third in a series about Mercy Carr, a former soldier who fought in Afghanistan, and now assists the police in certain inquiries. She is very attached to her dog, Elvis, who used to belong to Marcy's fiance, Juan Martinez and can sniff out bombs and people alike. In THE HIDING PLACE, Mercy is trying to solve the decades- old disappearance of Beth Kilgore, but before she can get fully immersed in the case, whe learns that the man who killed her grandfather has escaped from prison. Then all hell breaks lose and Mercy tries to protect her grandmother and herself, with a little help from her friend, Troy, the game warden. Munier gives us a lively, well-written mystery that will appeal to fans of Rita Mae Brown.

Another enjoyable entry in this series of mysteries. I feel like I've been using the word "enjoyable" a lot lately, and I should find another word. But it's a good word. I did truly enjoy this book, inhaling it in just a couple of days over my Christmas break. Anyone who has read the first books in this series will appreciate getting to spend time with these characters again, learning more about Mercy, her grandmother and her late grandfather--even her mother got a little more sympathetic treatment in this book. We also meet someone from Elvis's past. The mystery was interesting, and the setting of the Green Mountains of Vermont was portrayed in terrific detail. All in all, it was thoroughly enjoyable--really.

This is such a good series! We find Mercy and her dog Elvis once again chasing a mystery. It was full of action and suspense. It was kinda sad there towards the end when you think things might be changing. I really enjoyed the book and look forward to the next one in the series
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the early copy

This is the 3rd installment, but the first one I've read. Didn't feel lost, as the author did mention a few flashbacks along the way to help understand tensions. The story is centered around Mercy, a veteran who has a military trained dog named Elvis. She has an on and off relationship with game warden Troy, who has his own service dog Susie Bear (she is huge!). When a murder and a bomb attack on her grandmother occurs, a cold case of 20 years is brought forth. Time is running short as Mercy and Troy work together to piece the clues together before her grandmother becomes another victim. A few times it was skimmable, but overall enjoyed this one. I liked the dogs, the side characters plus the relationship building of Mercy and Troy. If you are looking for page after page of sex, this book is not for you. If you want a mystery that leads you to a conclusion though, I highly recommend this book and author. I plan on reading the other two in the series now. Good author and story.

The Hiding Place, the third installment in the series starring wounded Army veteran Mercy Carr and her search dog Elvis, is a fast paced well written novel. There is such a wonderful sense of place and climate in these books as the author describes life in a small town in the mountains of Vermont. The returning secondary characters are a strong presence and the relationship between Mercy and game warden Troy develops nicely. I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward to the next in the series.

The Hiding Place – Paula Munier

Mercy Carr & her retired military K-9 Elvis return for their best adventure yet, as Mercy unwittingly gains an old missing persons’ case to look into. Many years ago, Mercy’s ‘Grandpa Red’, then the local Sheriff, was killed by a man bent on revenge after his wife left him. His then partner, now on his own deathbed, asks to see Mercy, and gifts her with the files of a case he was never able to solve, imploring Mercy to “find her”. He is referring to the young Bethie Kilgore, who disappeared along with her abusive husband, with no trace of the couple ever found, aside from a postcard sent from Vegas all those years ago.

Meanwhile, Vermont Game Warden Troy Warner stops by Mercy’s home to notify her that her grandfather’s killer, George Rucker, has escaped from prison and disappeared, and they have good reason to believe that Mercy’s grandmother may be in danger. And if that’s not enough, Mercy receives a visit from a young soldier, Wesley Hallett, who claims that Elvis was once his military service dog, and he seems determined to have him back.

As Mercy begins to dig into the old case files, she her grandmother are injured in an unexpected attack, and an intruder attempts to steal the old case files from Mercy’s home, thwarted only by Elvis’ quick response. Now Mercy must put aside her fears of losing Elvis, and her personal differences with Troy, as he and the lovable Susie Bear, his search-and-rescue K-9, work to keep her grandmother out of harms’ way, and try to discover the fate of a woman who has been missing for over 20 years…

This is the third book in the Mercy & Elvis series and all I can say is that I LOVE them! Set in the beautiful northeastern state of Vermont, the story – the whole series - is fast paced and engaging, the protagonists, both 2 legged and 4, are loveable, relatable and flawed, and you’ll be flipping pages well into the night like I was! Great, GREAT series!!

Great setting (Vermont) and great characters (people and dogs) made this a perfect read for me. Though the third in a series, it flowed just fine for a reader such as myself who has not read the first two of the series. I enjoyed it so much that I sought out the first of the series and I'm reading it now.
For readers who have enjoyed Julia Spencer-Fleming's works, this will be a series that you'll want to check out.
