This second edition of Kingdom Ethics: Following Jesus ind Contemporary Context from Gushee and Stassen, is a welcome update from their first edition. While much of the main content and ideas are the same, which highlights the strength and consistency of their original offering, the fresh layout, and the added material that brings the conversation and contemporary ethical issues up-to-date, continues to make this an important text for understanding how to approach biblical ethics and apply this to current situations. Although not all agree with some of the positions that Gushee holds concerning current ethical conversations (for example regarding gender and sexuality), the academic rigour along with the grace and pastoral openness to which he approaches these discussions (Stassen passed away in 2014, prior to the publication of the second edition), engenders a humble and affirmative enquiry that both informs each topic by providing a wide spectrum of scholarly argument, while at the same time allowing the reader to consider their own position. In line with the first edition, the various contemporary ethical are informed primarily by the various ethical imperatives and concerns located in the New Testament. However, a strength of this text is that this is not merely an example of ethical proof texting. Instead, it is a well-balanced discussion of bridging the gap between the "then" of the biblical world that is informed by the scriptural texts, with the contemporary situation today. As such, Kingdom Ethics is an important primary or secondary text for any academic or pastoral engagement with Christian ethics.
