I really enjoyed reading this, it was a unique take on splicing, it was such a fun concept that delivers on its concept. I enjoyed meeting the characters and this universe.

I requested this on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. This tale of a dystopian future, with shades of Dr. Moreau will be a great selection for fans of sci-fi. I would be happy to read the sequel.

This book was so different from anything I have read in such a long time in the best way possible. I was a little confused at the beginning because there was so much to absorb. But once I caught on and got deeper into the story, it just kept getting better and better. The author does a fantastic job pulling and immersing us into this amazing, beautiful, different and often overly cruel fantasy world.

“Human beings are masters of the extinction game.”

Long ago when animals were near extinction, hybrid beings were born. They formed four Kingdoms. Kingdom A, B, R and OM. But once upon a time there were five. The fifth Kingdom, Cetacean, was destroyed by those who feared their power. Somehow a few of the Cetacean survived the genocide and over two hundred years later seventeen year old Siren has been sent with a few others on a mission to return to the place her people once called home, Earth.

“Everything seemed to flash before me. Brief snippets of a story I would one day have to string together into a linear tale that would make sense to me.”

On the way to start her mission Siren’s pod crashes in Kingdom Om and she is saved by Aedan, leader of the OM. Brought back to his Kingdom to heal she is an outsider and not welcomed by many. She must always be sure to hide who she truly is for fear of death. Yet Aedan and Siren are drawn to each other. He promises her his protection while Siren knows she must do anything she can to escape and finish her mission if her Breed has any chance of survival.

“He was bound to someone. Promised. And he had given me my first kiss. My first experience with human contact.”

Tension is high in OM and there are so many secrets, betrayals, twists and turns tucked within every corner. Siren has her mission and Aedan must do whatever is necessary to protect his people from the Breed threatening to literally devour them. There is just so much going on in this book, but it somehow all works together to make an absolutely amazing story. I don’t want to say much more and give too much away. I loved Siren and Aedan and several of the secondary characters. I even grew to like a few people I thought I hated. While a few others quickly landed on my list of people that the reptiles can just have.

“In Aedan, I saw everything that was right with humanity. He was strong. He was kind. He was sensitive.”

If you’re a fan of fantasy, paranormal and dystopian please read this book. Everything about it was brilliant. Even with that huge cliffhanger we were left with. I can’t wait to see what the author has in store for the next book!

What a rather unique YA novel.

Set in a dystopian world a 1K in the future, Breed shows how brutal Earth has become when humans annihilate themselves. Humans are now hybrids that live in their own separate lands and power and greed are at the forefront. The saddest part is that these groups are dying out because reproduction is almost extinct.

Siren is a Cetacean hybrid who’s very existence was intended to be wiped out by the other groups because they feared her kind. But on a mission to Earth to save her group, she finds herself questioning her preconceived notions about Earth’s inhabitants when she’s rescued by Aedan. At first mistrusted, she finds herself welcomed when she saves a young woman’s life. But not everything is as it seems when she discovers there are those who will do anything to maintain their existence even at their leaders’ expense.

This book serves as metaphor to events happening now. It shows how fear and hate can push people to do unthinkable things and how they can destroy. Though older, I enjoyed the book and look forward to the series since it ended on a cliffhanger.

* I received this book as an ARC for an honest review.

Thanks to NetGalley and Colet Abedi for reading Breed in exchange for a review.

'Human Beings are masters of the extinction game.'

With this opening sentence I was curious, I was hooked, I was awake till 1am reading.

This was the first book I have read from this author, and look forward to reading more in the future. Especially book 2 as Breed ended on a cliffhanger.

This book is way more interesting and enjoyable than the blurb describes.

The writing style had me having the same feels at the main character; Siren. I look forward to seeing the relationship between characters evolve in the continuing series and hope that karma gets the villains in the story.

Breed by Cole Abedi follows Siren as she travels to Earth to save the mast of her breed. The young adult dystopia book is unique in its plot line and easy to read in one sitting. The book ends on a cliffhanger, much like the end of a TV series, which is not my preferred ending but I will be looking forward to reading book 2.

I am so glad that I decided to go outside my box and read this YA fantasy romance. Breed was just what I needed to throw me a little variety in my reading.

What I loved:
I really enjoyed the overall plot of the story. I’ve always been a fan of dystopian type stories, and Breed brings a little fantasy twist to that. A lot is going on, and at the beginning, I thought maybe it was going to be too much, but it’s not. I think everyone will be able to follow along easily.

The heroine was perfection. Siren has a quiet but badass attitude that I loved. She didn’t just run off the mouth; instead observed her surroundings and bided her time.

The secondary characters made me so mad, but in the right way like villainous characters should. I wanted to strangle them and know more about them all at the same time.

What I did like
I never know if this is a spoiler or not, but it ends on a cliffhanger. As I always say, it’s not that I necessarily dislike cliffys; I like to be prepared for it going in. Since there are three other girls from the same place as Siren, I thought there would probably be one book for each girl, but not the case.

The one intimate scene is a fade to black, and I’m not a huge fan of those, but this is YA, so I let that pass.

Overall
Am I going to read the next book? Hell yes! I must find out what happens next!

The blurb does not do this story justice!
If you are looking for a fast-paced dystopian sci-fi adventure that transports the reader to a wonderfully crafted universe filled with eccentric personalities, unique species and edge of your seat suspense
Then this is for you!

Siren, who is much older than her 17yrs would have you believe, is on a mission to save her species. Like all things that we plan to perfection - everything that can go wrong does go wrong.
Trapped in a hostile land reliant on a species that has always been her enemy Siren must find a way to protect her true identity while completing her mission

Can she survive the OM long enough to make it to B or will her true genetic identity be discovered before she can escape?

I was not sure what to expect going in as this was a new author for me so I really did not foresee that once I picked this up I would be compelled to finish it in one sitting. The story was unique and easy to follow. The author did a great job of transporting me into the story, making me feel like I was actually there. I was cringing and laughing and making all those facial expressions and verbal cues (don't laugh, you just wait, I promise you can't help it)
The characters are so vivid and easy to connect with. I couldn't help but feel some form of attachment to them - well most of them there are a couple I would like to toss to the R people who have the sharpened teeth!
So much was packed into this first in series and yet I didn't feel like I was reading an outline. All the important pieces fit into the story easily. I am not even sure how to explain it (why I am not a writer).
A fabulous first in series that I recommend for those who enjoy YA sci-fi with a twist

This ends on a bit of a cliffy (fine a major cliffy) that left me really wishing it was longer or the second in the series was out now.

This YA story is original and refreshing, the world-building the author created was interesting and I found it very entertaining. It's a bit fast-paced and the characters are fantastic and original. A 17-year-old siren needs to save her species. Definitely a first for me from the author and won't be the last, I want to read to find out what comes next.

I was super worried this book wouldn't be my favorite and I would struggle to get through it. I love being proved wrong. While Breed was a bit slow to get into (tons of build up an story set up) after Abedi got through the set up it was a WILD ride. The dark twists and turns were utterly captivating. Holy smokes, read it now! I am mad I waited so long. I still am shaking my head (in a good way) at that ending.

I honestly expected to struggle to get into this book, I always like the premise of books like this, but then am unable to get into the story. That was not the case with this book, Once I got through the "background" section in the beginning I was hooked. The story moves quickly, with intriguing characters leading the way. The world is well thought out, detailed and easy to immerse myself in.

The story is set several centuries into the future. Scientists came up with a way to save species of animals from extinction, by combining their soul particles with humans. This worked for a while, but now the humans are facing their own extinction. Divided into kingdoms based on their species, 4 kingdoms destroyed the 5th, the cetaceans, sending the few survivors fleeing for another planet. Many years later the last cetaceans are sent back to earth, to return to their home planet and try to figure out a way to save their species.

When I said it moved quickly, I was serious. I literally wrote down "That was fast." when Siren kisses Aedan within hours of meeting him. The story also only encompasses 12 days, which I feel takes away from the organic ness of the relationships that grow and change.

That being said, I became immersed in this story. The characters are easy to become attached to, I found myself rooting for them easily. Looking forward to the sequel

An amazing book by an amazing author! I couldn't put it down! Miss Abedi is the only reason why I read paranormal and fantasy!

This book was a pretty slow start for me, which usually is a turn-off, but I stuck with it and quickly found out how good the book actually was. I’m very excited to have gotten a chance to read this book. The world-building was so detailed and amazing that I found myself immersed in the images the details conjured in my head. It’s a great read!

Thanks to the publisher for providing an eARC of Breed in exchange for an honest review.

Centuries in the future, after humanity has had to evolve to use the DNA of various different species, portagonist Siren is now one of the only Cetacean-humans remaining after her ancestors fled earth when the rest of the hybrids tried to kill off her kind. After crashlanding in the heart of enemy territory, Siren has to try and hide her true identity if she wants any chance of getting home. Or even surviving, for that matter.

Breed is a really good YA dystopia! The world is unique and you get a feel for the shifts in culture and why they occurred pretty quickly. Our protagonist is a tad generic for the genre, but she serves more as a machine for us to view the story through so it didn't really bother me. My only major issues come down to pacing. Near the end of the novel, you realize the story only spans 12 days and I honestly don't get the reasoning behind it. Nothing about Siren or her situation necessitates such a small time frame and it really hurts her character development with others in this, especially her love interest. So many of her positive relationships start out rocky and if you're trying to move from that to some form of strong bond, you need a lot more than 12 days to make it seem more believable. This book goes through character and relationship arcs that normally span weeks and it at times makes the characters appear unrealistic or juvenile and at others makes them seem really unlikable when they move through what should be serious grieving periods in a day or less.

Overall, this was good, but I really don't understand the pacing or timeline.

Wow. I didn’t expect to get sucked into this world as quickly as I did.

The description really intrigued and fascinated me.

The beginning was kind of confusing, but I think all books with new worlds seem like that.

I loved the different dynamics of each Breed and the insight to the past. I realize there are more books to come and perhaps there will be more insight to the past. That would be my only critique is I want to know more as to why Siren’s breed were massacred. Why Milo is willing to destroy his home for power?

So many unanswered questions.

The moments of compassion, humility, and even strength made this book so amazing.
