Super interesting and informative. This really dove into the psychology and lasting impact of events of the past and how they continue to perpetuate throughout society today. Having lived in China, I found it an accurate representation of a changing landscape that is marriage and family.

I had a feeling it would come to what it did in China. I'm glad Dr. Scharff has put it all together in one place. China really did create a disaster for itself. No one is genius enough to figure out how to control a population. And killing off the intellectuals only brought new issues to the population. Well, didn't everyone on the planet see that one coming? As for the current wife shortage well good for the girls! It's paid off for them and their families! Our way of life may not be perfect, but I'll take it over theirs any day of the week. And anyway, what's with all the millionaires and billionaires in a communist country these days?! Not sharing the wealth too well are they? And then there's the covid fiasco..... The government surely has a lot on it's plate... At any rate, the book is a fascinating look marriage and family in another culture. Worth a read? Absolutely..

I selected this book because we have a member of our extended family that was adopted from China. This book is an excellent resource, not only for those that have an active psychotherapy practice but anyone interested in what daily life, ( family and marriage relationships) looks like in modern China. The authors outline recent history and major events that have occurred. They explain the framework of Chinese thought and culture behind their behaviors and problems. Briefly walks through history to understand the different approaches in psychological theories. They then examine how these China’s traumatic history can have an effect on daily life today. The authors compared the difference in values; China and their value of society as supreme, and Western society that values individualism adove all, and how this translates into the differences and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. A fascinating read.
