Most of us don't put much thought into the science of sleep. We are told that it is vital to our physical and mental health but that's typically the extent of it. Woodgate goes much further, presenting us with a wide collection of facts about sleep in humans and in animals: the how, sh where, and even who. All of these facts are accompanied by explanatory illustrations featuring a charming cat. A fun book to flip through.

This has to be the best children’s book in sleep I’ve ever read. Very informative with detailed pictures, charts, and diagrams. Great for Science classes in elementary and middle grades.

This was another great reference book for children that could also teach adults something new. The colorful illustrations and simple layout of this book would name this a great read for young curious minds.

The Magic of Sleep: A Fascinating Guide to the World of Slumber by Vicky Woodgate is currently scheduled for release on March 2 2021. We spend about 26 years of our lives sleeping, but how much do you really know about what happens when your head hits the pillow? This book answers all your questions about what goes on in your head when you snooze, including the difference between light and deep sleep, where dreams come from, and how essential sleep is to staying healthy. Discover fascinating facts about how people slept in the past, and how people sleep in different ways around the world. Did you know that the oldest mattress was found in South Africa and is 77,000 years old? As well as humans, learn about the sleeping habits of other animals, from bears hibernating to how bats sleep upside down. Even plants sleep! Finally, learn how you can get a proper night's sleep with practical tips and ideas for meditation to calm your mind before bedtime.

The Magic of Sleep is a well written, illustrated, and organized book about sleep for young readers. I thought the chosen information was well phrased. It made the information interesting and engaging while not crossing the line into being condescending. I thought the illustrations did a good job of demonstrating the facts while keeping or increasing the interest of the reader. I will admit that I recently listed to an audiobook on the same topic, for the same age group. They started of very similar, and shared many of the same facts, so it was hard for me to separate the two in my mind. However, since both covered the topic so well, and with such a high interest level, being compared did nothing to decrease my enjoyment of either. I enjoyed that the time was taken to include a glossary and index, to allow for a closer reading and understanding for interested readers.

This book used a cuddly cat as a sleep guide to walk readers through an incredible, in-depth analysis of sleep! It had a remarkable blend of history, facts, tips, mindfulness, breathing exercises, and so much more! This book has a very relevant subject now that the pandemic has disrupted the world's sleeping patterns, so I would definitely recommend it to parents, schools, libraries and teachers. Kids 9-12 could read it on their own, but younger children would need assistance with the volume of text. I personally learned a lot from this book, and the sleep guide cat kept things fun and engaging for readers. The only reason I didn't rate it higher was because I found the layout/contrast of the text a difficult to read at times, which might leave readers skipping portions of the text that are really very interesting/informative!!

"The Magic of Sleep" by Vicky Woodgate is a classroom read aloud and a reference high-interest book. This book takes the next step from many bedtime stories. It teaches about the wonders and importance of sleep. It is filled with super engaging visuals, sleep positions, stages of sleep, the sleep of plants and animals, and many more other interesting facts. My students love reference books and choose to read them on their own in the classroom, on daily basis, sharing with each other interesting facts, and reading together. “The Magic of Sleep” is home and classroom must-have. Sufficient sleep is so important for learning and yet the last thing kids want to hear is that it’s time for bed. I am sure that this book will serve as an educational reminder of good reasons to go to sleep.

This is best book for showing the differences in sleep habits. This would be a good classroom library book for someone who has a hard time falling asleep to read. This book goes through as a cat, in the different kinds of beds to even what exactly what happens to your body when you fall asleep. This book had so much information that I thought I knew, but I really didn't!! How animals sleep, to what nighttime workers do. The illustrations are wonderful and allow you to see what happens when you sleep and when you can't.

The Magic of Sleep may be a children's book but I believe it is for all ages. I learned so many things I didn't know and imagined the possible discussions it would provide for families having sleep difficulties. A delightful read for young and old!

I really like this comprehensive and attractively illustrated book on sleep. It is geared towards kids and includes a lot of information. Just some of the topics briefly covered include sleeping positions, larks & owls, stage of sleep, dreams, nightmares, beds through time, the night sky, sleep in numbers, tips for better sleep and more. Plus, a cute kitten guides readers through the pages. Each section is short and this book can be read in order or flipped through.

Help a child you know to sleep better by sharing this title.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.
