What a cute way to explain the necessity of continuing to wear our masks during this pandemic!
It even had little asterisks for definitions of bigger words.

This book is told through the perspective of different animals and explains about the Coronavirus, and what we can do to protect ourselves.
Its a bit silly but would appeal very highly to younger children - especially alongside the photos of the animals wearing the masks.

I read this book with my daughter and she really enjoyed it

It was a little bit silly and funny but that was so great about it and the way that Covid-19 was discussed. It didn't detract from how serious everything is but I have a three year old who doesn't really understand what is going on - she just knows hands, face, space and shouts that when she sees the sign out and about or on TV.

The book has a really important message and it is pitched perfectly for the age range.

The photos were funny to see the animals with the masks on but they really helped get her engaged and it was easy for her to understand too.

A great read and highly recommended - 4 stars!

This book provides a dialogue through a variety of animals to help children to understand the impact of coronavirus and what we can do to help minimise the risk of spreading.

What I liked:
- The message of the book – it is an important message and this book sets out to educate young children on a complex topic as simply as possible.
- The use of dialogue to relay information in a way that is more engaging.
- Each point is explained in a few sentences and therefore a child is less likely to be overwhelmed.
- There are a couple of definitions provided for words that may be difficult to understand.
- The inclusion of questions that children are likely to ask e.g. “what kind of masks can we get?” and an answer provided immediately after.

What I didn’t like:
- The images are inappropriate. They distract from the message of the book because it is not clear what is happening in the picture. The addition of a medical-related prop to each of the animals in the pictures does not look attractive. I think it would have been much more appropriate to use illustrations.
- Some of the words used would not be easily be understood the target audience (4-11 year olds) and time would need to be spent explaining them.

It has the potential to make a good educational resource, however, my issue with the images is significant enough to stop me from recommending it. It could, therefore, work better as an audiobook.

I love this cute little story! I think masks can be scary for little children because they do not understand why some people chose to wear them. I think the author does a great job of explaining why we wear masks and what the coronavirus is. She gives the need to know in a way for our littlest ones to be able to understand. I appreciate the inclusion of different animals and the characters will be a delight to the ones reading the book. I highly recommend this book to parents and caregivers alike. It does not matter which side of the mask you are on, this book does an excellent job of explaining why people are wearing them, which will be helpful to all children.

Thank you to Net Galley and Books Go Social for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to give a positive review, but was happy to do so. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Part of an existing series of books brilliantly adapted into a new and original story of the squirrel family adjusting to life within a global pandemic.
So to combat COVID 19, Dr Sarah squirrel (Margot’s doctor) brings information in a child friendly way.
The author, Lieve Snellings through pictures of the wider squirrel family, mostly wearing masks, and simple blocks of speech bubble text shares the advice adults have not yet processed and sadly don’t always comply with.
Perhaps we adults will now have a chance to assimilate this information as our children are being let into our secret hushed concerns. They will have this message for themselves, the need for hand washing, social distancing and wearing masks presented to them in this delightful story book.
It is sound information aimed at young people in a way they can understand without feeling patronised. In this way it is inclusive, brings about conversations around issues they know are already troubling to adults.
I especially like that the science of masks is raised in terms of aerosol transmission and what a pandemic actually means for the wider world.
The pictures carry the beauty of these animals, my three year old loves to watch the local squirrels raiding the neighbours bird table by stealth and ingenuity. These resourceful animals through this inspiring book have a story to share and a message that everyone still needs to grasp.
A great book to share adult issues since the implications for the next generation will be more than the financial legacy of debt.

I was excited to see this book. It looked like it might be a good book to share with my grandkids. However, I found the pictures a bit disturbing. I did not like the way the masks were drawn onto the pictures. Also, the wording of the text seemed odd to me. As a retired primary grades teacher, I felt the language, at times, was above the level of understanding for young kids.

Good points: Excellent message, though it may need some more explanation for children to understand it. Also, I really like the font used in the book.

Young readers and parents will enjoy this book! While it was a bit silly and humorous, Why We Wear Masks had an extremely important message that was easy for children to understand. The little masks on all of the animals were cute! We enjoyed reading this book together as a family and it helped generate some great discussion about Covid-19 and why we wear masks.
