A fabulous police procedural telling the story of a courageous pair hunting a ruthless killer, one a detective and the other a nurse. A fine read!

Excellent story, as always. I enjoyed this book. Danielle is one of my favorite authors and I was excited to read the preview of this new one.

This book is so good I almost don't have words to describe it. Far Gone is exactly what all excellent thrillers should be. The only reason I read it in two sittings instead if one was that I started far too close to bedtime (and I struggled through, keeping my eyes open as long as I could).

From the start the pacing is excellent - Girard manages to make every moment matter in a way that creates the intensity you expect from a good thriller (which is magnificently sustained throughout), while also creating an incredible attachment to the characters you're following. This is something I have rarely found in this genre - often you either get slow and heavy-handed character development to forge reader attachment, or you get a fast pace and intense plot that doesn't really promote a strong connection with the cast of the narrative.

The story follows three threads - Hannah, a fourteen year old who was babysitting at the house where the initial crime occured; Lily, a nurse on staff the night one of the vicitms is brought in to try and save; and Kylie, the detective on the case. Each of these women are written as multi-faceted people who have experienced a range of incredibly difficult things - and who navigate these things in a very believable way. Thrillers always bring up issues that in all fiction genres are often used as a womens One and Only Trauma (typically assault or childnessness - in this instance sexual assault) and often it's not incorporated well. That's not the case here at all and I honestly appreciate the heck out of it - I also love that when the focus is on Hannah she is believably written as a 14 year old. It's just (quite sadly) so damn refreshing to read women of all ages written realistically.

Far Gone is the second in it's series, but you don't need to have read the first in order to enjoy it. I didn't even realise there was a first in the series until I'd finished and had assumed that all the backstory given was just that, backstory. I'm looking forward to reading the first book, and given the events of this installment suspect I might enjoy the first more knowing how the second comes together. I'll also be keenly reading Girard's entire body of work.

Set for publication on 6th July 2021, I honestly advise all thriller lovers to get their hands on a copy.

When I picked this book from Netgalley I didn't realize it was from a series and I didn't read the first book. It was an okay book - thank you to Netgalley for giving me a copy.

This is one of the books that can keep you on the edge while you reading. In every chapter of this book, you discovering something new and shocking. This is why I must admit I am so addicted.

Far Gone is the second book of the Badlands series that follows Lily and Kylie on their adventures. If you don't have a chance to read the first book that doesn't mean that you can enjoy the second one. You can easily keep up with everything that happens in the past and present.

The book begins with the murder of Nadine and Ben Garza where 14-year-old babysitter Hannah is a witness. She will recognize the killer, but she will don't know from where. At the beginning of the investigation, the detective Kylie Milliard will find blood in the crime scene that will be connected with the nurse Lily Backer were 14 years ago was the victim of the kidnapping.

Three women with their own stories, go through a journey trying to find their ways to unveil the mystery that in the end will bring them together in an unpredictable way.

Amazing book! I recommend this book to everyone.

Thank you to Net Galley for the opportunity to read such a good book. And a special thank you to Danielle Girard for writing this amazing book.

Read this in a couple days - a definite page turner! Good character development, very human and you feel like you know these people. A lot of red herrings and complicated plot that kept you guessing until the end when everything was wrapped up nicely. Hope the author continues with these characters!

Because of reasons, there are things in the timeline here that are somewhat difficult to follow if you haven't read the first book. I didn't know there was a first book until about halfway through and was left with a somewhat muddled impression all around. Don't be like me.

In this second book of the series, our two heroines (Kylie & Lily) are once again linked in a mystery that will change lives forever. Detective Kylie is trying to solve a murder of a couple staged to look like a murder/suicide. Their babysitter, Hannah, witnesses the attack and saves the couple's infant daughter, but she is now on the run from the murderer. Struggling with drug addiction, Hannah does not feel like she can go to her parents, a very well known and wealthy couple. Her dad is an ER doctor at the hospital. As she tries to find some safety, Kylie discovers some information that involves Lily and her past kidnapping. Along with her team, Kylie works to find the missing pieces of the puzzle -- who killed this young couple and why? In the midst of solving the crime, romance continues to grow between Lily and Iver, while Kylie sees a new side to her colleague, Gilbert. I look forward to seeing what comes next for these two strong women.

Far Gone by Danielle Girard is the sequel to White Out that published in July 2020. I enjoyed that book especially in how Girard wrote about trauma and PTSD in an entertaining but helpful and respectful way. In Far Gone, she continued showing how PTSD affects survivors and their relationships and also a character who struggled with drug addiction.

This a great sequel and great thriller. She introduces characters and questions in a way that was easy to follow and stirred up that tension we love in a good thriller. I guessed answers to some of the questions but how the whole thing came together was such a surprise. I especially loved the ending. I would read more from this author.

Thank you NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for a copy of this in exchange for my honest review!

Danielle Girard's Far Gone follows the intertwining lives of three women: Kiley (a police detective), Lily (a nurse and kidnapping survivor) and Hannah (a 14-year old girl). Told from alternating points of view, Kylie is thrust into solving a murder case where the evidence is piling up and going in multiple directions. Navigating in various settings including her department office, the hospital, and the North Dakota wilderness, Kylie, Lily, and Hannah are focused on resolving the murder. With strong female characters and vivid dialog, this is a fantastic read! I hope we hear more about these three women!

A highly engaging narrative with a complex storyline in a town full of secrets and two women’s journey to find their own truths. Danielle Girard has created not only one, but two outstanding heroines in the Badlands Thriller series that readers will be immediately drawn to. Both women seek answers but perhaps for different reasons. As one works to uncover the reason a couple was gunned down in their own home, the other continues to deal with the ramifications from past traumas she can’t escape. The plot is decisive and on point, leaving readers glued to the pages. Great read.

Although I didn’t read the first book in the series, I was able to jump right into this book and enjoy the excellent thriller-mystery. A good story with good characters in a well-described setting provide all a mystery reader could ask for..

Far Gone is the second book in the Badlands thriller series. It publishes in July, plenty of time to read the first book, White Out if you haven’t. We are back in Hagen, North Dakota, a small town that is anything but sleepy.
Kylie Milliard is still the only detective in Hagen, and she is called to the scene of a double homicide. A young couple, both shot, a missing baby, and a witness who is unaccounted for leads to a lot of questions and not many answers. When a DNA profile reveals that someone was in the house, someone who is closely related to Lily Baker, the situation becomes even more confusing. Lily was abducted years ago, and many of the things that happened to her, remain elusively out of her mind’s reach.
Lily is stunned when Kylie reveals the DNA connection, and slowly, certain memories resurface. Kylie must dig into Lily’s painful past if she has any hope of saving the frightened and on the run witness. When all the puzzle pieces come together, a twisted tale of lies, sexual abuse, and murder are revealed.
Great characters and a plot that weaves together the present and the past. I am being deliberately vague to not give away major plot points, and I wouldn’t read much more than the book description. I am really enjoying this series and do hope there will be another book.

I recently read the first book in this series and was looking forward to picking this one up. Overall, I really enjoyed it. The second novel involves most of the same characters as the previous novel, but is readable on its own without loss of continuity. The opening scene involves murder and drug use, which drew me right in.

I love the harsh landscape setting, as well as the small town dynamics in the series. Reviewers of the first novel were annoyed by the main detective's knuckle cracking, a habit which seems to have evaporated in the second novel. Lily's backstory also adds interest. I love an amnesia trope. Although this one is particularly convenient, with returning memories arising to pace the novel, but I was absolutely willing to suspend belief.

Far Gone is the second book in the series, and I haven't read the first book. Maybe that would have helped, but it still worked fine as a stand alone.

In my last review of White Out, I didn't think that I would be continuing this story.

Man am I happy I did! Lily has reestablished her life, making her narrative so much better to follow. Kylie is still the resident badass of the police force with a penchant for banana cream pie. And in this book we meet Hannah, a young girl on the run after a crazy set of circumstances... The tension in this book was built nicely and had some nice twists and turns in the narrative. Overall I really enjoyed the characterization in this thriller and will be happy to read the 3rd.

This book is tense and thrilling from the first moment. This small town thriller starts with Hannah, a 14-year old babysitter, who witnesses a brutal murder and must flee with an infant in order to save herself and the child. Hannah recognized the voice of the killer, but does not know where she knows him from, and is terrified he will kill her before she figures out who she is.

Police Detective Kylie Millard and her team must race to identify the killer to find Hannah before he does. As she digs deeper into the crime, mysteries of the past relating to her friend Lily Baker's abduction when she was a child surface and Detective Millard must solve more crimes than the original murder.

I love the way these 3 women are portrayed with all their strengths and vulnerabilities. I also love the way the mysteries of the past are unveiled and the plot comes together in an unpredictable yet satisfying way.

Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
