I really wish I liked this more because the idea was interesting but it was poorly executed. Everything was random decisions and actions with no thought process or explanation. I felt no connection to the main character and found her VERY annoying. The character growth was all over the place and felt sloppy. The writing style was just cliffnote info dump of what happened February 4th of that year over 10 years, which made it impossible to feel like you’re actually reading a book. Also, this is marketed as a romance, but it had only had a small handful of romance scenes. I’d say it’s more about her friendship with Fiona and just a lot of shitty relationships.

Twisty | Charming | Fun

Plot Twist was a really cute story that spans over a decade, each chapter focusing on the crazy February 4ths that the main character, Olivia, experiences. I love Olivia’s friendship with Fiona and the twists and turns that the romantic relationships took in the book. Bethany also did an amazing job with the relevant pop culture references spanning the decade. I also love that the ending did not turn out how I thought it would. This is definitely a unique romance read and I couldn’t wait to find out what would actually happen at the end!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for the advanced copy!

I wasn't really a fan of this book. The premise sounded great, but the actual writing was kind of boring. It was hard to feel sympathetic toward the main character since she created all her own problems. I was glad that by the end she got herself sorted out a bit better, but wish she had been a little more developed. Instead it felt like she constantly used the same movie tropes to describe her life, that she was a sidekick, not a lead, and Liam was now a leading man, so he couldn't possibly stick around. And Fiona was just this flat character who was lucky, everything good happens to her, and everything bad just rolls right off. Very unrealistic. If I didn't feel the need to finish the book in order to review, I probably would have given up half way through.

This was a cute, sweet and heartfelt story with a really interesting premise. One year, Olivia Ross bumps into a struggling actor in a coffee shop and they hit it off. They agree to meet back at that coffee shop in 10 years, by. which time Olivia will have written a screenplay for him. And this is the story of that encounter and the years following that. The chapters are each on that same date in periodic years.

I would say though, don't go into this expecting a super strong focus on the romance. Romance is definitely a part of the story and there is a buildup/exploration of a relationship in the story, but I'd say this skews more Women's Fiction - which is all good! There's also a really strong focus on friendship :))

On the point of the romance - I both was and wasn't expecting the way that it would turn out. It was pretty clear early on in the story what path it was going to take, but I didn't mind it. The romance itself turned out to be quite angsty which is always a bonus hehe.

Overall, this book was just okay for me. Perhaps it's because I'm not quite in the target age range or market. I never really felt like I connected with Olivia as a character. I kept feeling like throughout the story we were just <I> told </I> about what was going on or how she was feeling, and we didn't really get a strong sense of her emotions in a more organic way (if that makes sense). While I liked the concept of following what conspicuously happens on that same day each year, I wish we got <I> more </I> of Olivia, and the other characters in between.

Naturally there are some really fun coincidences and run-ins throughout the story - from meeting George Clooney to bumping into ex's and running after actors in the airport. They were quite fun to read!

Overall - pick this up if you're looking for a sweet, fun women's fiction romance....with a twist.

Throughout each February 4th chapter, Olivia struggles with the longest writer’s block I’ve ever read about. Sure, ten years are a lot, and I’ve read some reviews on Goodreads complaining about this, but let’s be fair: she only spends a year actually writing, the rest of it is pure procrastination. Only when she is ready to deal with her feelings she is finally able to write it, cue the happy ending in the script she writes.

For the most part of her journey she is accompanied by her best friend and roommate, Fiona. Let me point out how much I love their friendship and how their bond is able to resist the adversities they go through. Everyone should have a carefree and encouraging friend like Fiona in their life! You can sense how much they care for each other even when things get dire between them.

Another reason why I love this book is that it talks about screenwriting and Los Angeles. Both are obsessions of mine, to the point that I’ve dreamed of leaving everything behind to pursue a career there more than once. Since I’m not going to do that, not in this life anyway, I’m glad for anything that lets me live the dream vicariously.

And let me dream a bit about Liam here. He is sweet, caring, adorable, loyal. And he has a big heart. Perfect guy? Heck yes. I love how Bethany Turner wrote him, and how skilled she is at writing adorable characters in general. Her style is clean and simple and the pacing of this story is so amazing that it only took me four hours to read the whole book.

On with the cons. I have two, and both are overshadowed by the perfect ending, but I’m pointing them out anyway.

First, I’m not sure of Caleb’s purpose aside from encouraging Olivia to show up at the coffee shop for the ten years anniversary. By now you probably know how I feel about new characters introduced around the end of a story, and, since there already were several important ones, I wish one of them could have had his lines. I can’t help but feel Olivia’s brother would have been a great choice because of the relationship they have.

The next one is the revelation of who the mystery guy really is. His invisible presence in Olivia’s life feels too coincidental to me and I’m not sure I appreciated it. That said, Plot Twist was a great read. It was moving, it made me dream, and it lifted my mood for sure. My rating is 4.5/5 stars.

So sadly a DNF! This one had so much potential, and the idea is very reminiscent of Colleen Hoover's November 9. However, it's a big undertaking for a book to cover an entire decade, and unfortunately that's where this one fell short. Just when I would feel like I was getting a better look at Olivia's relationship with her true love (don't want to spoil it), we would be whisked away to the next year. It was rather jarring. So 3/5 stars for a good idea and engaging characters, just a miss on the execution!

I'm torn. I loved and hated this book. Loved as in LOVED and hated in a it's-not-all-bad sort of way.

As with other remarkable books by Bethany Turner, she sets up a wonderful story in the first chapter. We meet our heroine in a coffee shop (perfect setting) and she meets a guy (swoon.) But then we have to wait a whole year for the next big thing. Then, the next! And all the swoony-ness gets lost in all the waiting.

I think the plot device--having the story occur on the same date every year for ten years--sets the scene for an interesting story. Anticipation builds as the reader awaits the next encounter with the love interest, and he is dreamy. But it also requires the characters to recap the year on the "following" day.

Therein lies another problem. We spend too little time with the love interest. He's on the page and we long to have the two wake up and smell the coffee--ahem--reality of their situation, but before we get too comfortable he is gone again.

As for a romance, the story is mostly complete and inspires the reader to cheer for the hero and heroine. But as a romance, there just isn't enough romance. It is a sweet-clean read, but not a Christian romance at all. There is no faith mentioned, and the characters rely very heavily on fate or chance or some cosmic swirling something around the day in which the story evolves.

About midway through, the story strays from the love interest to friendship, and often feels like it is more about the two friends than any kind of romance. Which would be fine, if that is how the story is marketed. But the romance is secondary.

Turner has a fun, quirky voice and fills the pages with pop culture references that add depth to the story IF you know the references. If not, a lot of the message could be lost. A small complaint, probably from an editorial perspective, I did have a problem with the heroine being familiar with so many rom-coms, when she herself seemed to despise the genre.

Don't get me wrong. I binged this story. I enjoyed so much of it, I will likely read it again. But I also know I would skip over a lot of the friend stuff and get to the moments between the heroine and her love.

If there ever was a book I thought should be made into a movie, this is it! Oh. My. Goodness!
Did you hear me, Bethany . . . This needs to be a movie! I would pay bucks to see it over and over! This is such a fun and enjoyable book to read! I loved every moment I was in it; so much so, that I didn’t want to put it down! I read it all in one day and then was so upset that I was done, I actually re-read parts of it! There were a few deep relational parts, but oh the fun parts were so worth reading again and again! They were just so quirky and refreshing. Which actually made the whole book flow so smoothly.
Bethany Turner has become one of my MOST favorite authors to read if I’m having a bad day because I know I will laugh, cry, sigh, moan, giggle, and swoon! Her characters are so enjoyable to get to know. I truly feel I know them and want them to be my friends.
In this story, we are taken through time. Each chapter is a new year on the same date, or around the same date. (It’s sort of like the Groundhog’s Day movie, but not!)
I love how the author brings in SO many familiar movies, actors, and songs. It brings the story to life.
Bethany Turner has a very fascinating way of writing! The voices of each character are delightful and intriguing. She also threw in some twists I didn’t see coming.
This book is full of humor, drama, and awkwardness, as well as a sweet romance. It will make you laugh out loud. I found myself having to try and be quiet while reading it late at night, so I wouldn't wake my husband. There are also many tender moments between all the characters.
I loved this story and will recommend it to anyone and everyone who wants a fun book to read.
I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I was really looking forward to this book since I really enjoyed Hadley Beckett's Next Dish, but this one ended up being an average read for me. I did enjoy the dialogue and the banter between characters. I appreciated the friendship Olivia and Fiona had. I just felt that the span of a decade was a bit too long and drawn out for me, personally. Overall though, if you want a clean (not Christian) rom-com, you may enjoy this book.

I didn't want this book to end! I felt these were people I could be friends with!
First time I've read Bethany Turner but definitely looking forward to finding more books from Amazon

I really enjoyed this book. It references Sleepless in Seattle and An Affair to Remember and those were two I thought of as I read this as well.

This story takes place over the course of 10 years - each section is a year later on the same "ironic" date. I love the idea that you could meet the love of your life in the same cafe 10 years after a fated promise.

The book also focuses on a female friendship. It is funny, lots of pop culture references and heartwarming all rolled into one. This is not a steamy book and it didn't need to be. And yes! There is a fun plot twist. I will look for more of this author's books!

Put this one in your summer beach bag!

This was definitely much different than any book I've read before. Each chapter takes place exactly one year after the next - always on February 4th. We go from 2003 to 2013 and see the wild things that happen to Olivia Ross on that day.

I think that because of the format we don't get the character development that we might be used to. I didn't quite connect with Olivia as much as I might have in a normal book, but she did endear herself to me. She's a likable character with struggles that I could relate to.

My favorite thing was her friendship with Fiona. It's exactly the kind of thing I dream about!!! They fight for each other, even when they fight with each other.

The ending is exactly what I wanted, though I do wish it hadn't taken 10 years for the HEA to happen. And that plot twist!!!! I did NOT see that coming.

I laughed out loud several times, which is always a good sign. There were a lot of pop culture references I did not get but also some that I did and I recognized most of the famous people. I like how they were just regular people that the characters interacted with.

This book was so much fun! I was able to read it in a few hours and enjoyed the plot with the plot twist. It was a very cute rom com that was engaging until the end. Even though the book was only one day each year I still got a good gist of their lives

Thanks to Thomas Nelson & NetGalley for a copy to honestly review.

Plot Twist is a Where Rainbows End (Love, Rosie) type story where characters keep twisting through each other's lives for over a decade. Olivia is a self-proclaimed supporting character trying to write a screenplay while currently employed at a greeting card company. One crazy day on February 4th, 2003, she has a serendipitous encounter with a sexy Irish actor (classic leading man material) and they make a deal: in ten years, they will meet back at this coffee shop on the same day and he will act in the screenplay she writes. Over the course of ten years, each February 4th is a little bit *ironic.* Crazy things just seem to happen, both good and bad. This seems like a perfect love story of Olivia and this mysterious man, but it’s truly not. This is more so about the friendship and connection she has with her best friend, Fiona, and an ex-boyfriend turned friend, Liam.

This is a book that isn’t perfect, but I really enjoyed it. I would say the first half felt very rushed—as soon as I started getting invested in the story, it would suddenly flip forward to the next February 4th. I would have liked to see it a bit more fleshed out. As I mentioned previously, this book definitely makes you think Olivia has to end up with the mysterious guy, but that isn’t the premise at all. The true love interest is Liam. I wish more would have been done to make that clear. Overall, the second half made me rate this book higher (technically a 3.5 but will round up to a 4). I really liked Olivia finding out she is a leading lady, and I love the twist in the end.

This book takes place over a ten year period. The book is sectioned by the passage of a year. It is set in reality but I felt that some of the events in this book were not that realistic. While this is marketed as a romance, I felt that the relationship between the hero and her best friend was in many ways, the predominant relationship.

The writing style was very readable and if you are looking for a clean read for the beach - that's what I'd recommend this book for. While this is called Christian Fiction, this was not mentioned in the book. I'd say that it was more billed that way as it was a clean read.

I got this book free for an honest review. This was an okay book and I kept reading to find out what happened. I guess I just didn't feel invested enough in the characters unfortunately - However, I do recommend giving it a go as you may see this differently from me.

This was a fun, quick read! I got attached to the main character and wanted to find out what happened to her in the end. However, I'm not sure if marketing this book as a romance does it a bit of a disservice (it's hard to explain why without spoilers, so I'm being careful here). It reminded me of a book like The Switch by Beth O'Leary in the sense that that was marketed as romance, but more about the relationship between the main character and her grandmother, Plot Twist also felt like it was more about the relationship between the main character and her best friend.

I'd definitely be interested in reading more of Bethany Turner's books in the future!

This is a slow-burn, surprising and easy-going story wrote in a unique way. Bethany did an amazing job with this book. and her sweet, lovable but real characters. I really loved this book and I hope to read more from her.

Super enjoyable story by Bethany Turner!

I loved the super cute meet-cute in Plot Twist on February 4th. Greeting card writer Olivia Ross is working at a coffee shop and detests being hit on. She really is there to work. and doesn't want to be distracted. When not writing greeting cards, she is working on her perpetually unfinished screenplay. A cute and funny man with an accent and kind eyes helps her escape unwanted attention by his witty banter. They agree to meet back at the coffee shop in ten years, he an actor will have an armload of Academy Awards and she will have a screenplay for him. They never do exchange names. Every February 4th for 10 years is the anchor of the story. Plenty of twists and turns, some very self-sacrificing love and friendship, and the perfect ending!

I highly recommend Plot Twist for fans of romantic comedy. Bethany Turner does it SO well!

Thank you to Net Galley for the opportunity to read an early copy. All opinions are my own.

Fans of Josie Silver's One Day in December and Colleen Hoover's November 9 are sure to love this fated lovers/missed chances romance. And if you're a movie buff, you're bound to like this even more. 3.5 stars

I was so anxious to read this book. I wanted to savor and enjoy every minute. So when I read the first scene in the coffee shop, I was intrigued, where was this plot twist going??

But then, I got lost. And until about a third of the way into the book, I was lost, I didn’t think I could finish it. I just couldn’t follow at all!!

But then I gave it one more chance and whoa!!! I was totally in, couldn’t be pulled away! From then on, the plot twists and turns - and what angst! SO glad I kept reading!

This book has to be the top contender in the anticipation index. The book journeys over 10 years, so the anticipation builds over all this time. And it all revolves around Feb. 4, ironic circumstances, fate, love and hope (and kisses).

The greeting card entries were touching and spot on. And I loved the ending!

I may go back and reread this book, to learn now what I may have missed before.
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read this book. The opinions are entirely my own.
