I enjoyed this book. This is the second book I’ve read by this author and each gets better and better! Thanks to publisher and NetGalley.

Special thanks to Netgalley for providing me with this ARC.

Ruth is now head of UNN's archeology department. Her hands are full with this new position, as well as Kate's social and extracurricular activities. But she still has time to called to assist the police when a body is found on the salt marsh, and a murder suicide note states there is a body buried in the home's garden.

A group of amateur archeologists, or metal detectorists as the book refers to them, called Night Hawks keeps showing up at the scenes of the crimes, and each member seems to have something to hide.

All of the favorite characters make an appearance. And we see a much-needed decision almost made.

Thank you NetGalley for an ARC of The Night Hawks. I love this series and I love Dr. Ruth Galloway with her wry sense of humor and all the other characters in this book. Cathbad is probably my favorite. His musings on life make me smile every time. A great mystery with many twists and turns.

The Night Hawks is an expertly crafted forensic mystery that will keep you digging and processing until the end. Ruth and David and Nelson and Judy are great "detectives" uncovering clues at every murder and keep you turning page after page of this exciting novel.

I love Elly Griffiths' Ruth Galloway series. This is the 13th book, and even though they can be read out of order, the main characters do develop quite a bit over the time, so it is most enjoyable if the books are read in order.
Ruth is back in Norfolk, in her cottage by the sea, head of the University's archeology department and working with DCI Nelson whenever he needs her forensic expertise.
An amateur archeologist group, called the Night Hawks find a treasure of old coins and two bodies. One from the bronze age another just a few hours old. Within days a young police officer responding at the scene is dead, and an apparent murder-suicide occurs at a remote farmhouse - again with members of the Night Hawks involved.
The crime plot is well spun, but just as enjoyable are the well known characters around Ruth and Nelson; family, friends and colleagues.

Thank you NetGally for this ARC.

This series never fails to entertain with a jaw-dropping ending, the welcome punch of subtle humour, and the tangled lives of Nelson and Ruth Galloway (will-they-or-won’t-they). As always, histories past and present mirror each other. They bring together the folklore and legends of Norfolk as well as the personal travails and relationships of the protagonists.

I love the Ruth Galloway series, but I didn't love this book. I thought it was disjointed and all-over-the-place. There were a lot of continuity lapses. Some years seem to have passed since the last book. Ruth and Kate have now returned to Norfolk and Kate is now a preteen, which is disconcerting. There's a lot of explanation in the book, which is annoying.

But I particularly disliked the ending. First of all, it was particularly jarring to have both Michelle and Ruth at the farm. That was just ham-handed. If Tony doesn't know about Ruth, how would anyone else? Also, why would the killer just confess out of the blue at the farm? He has a perfectly good reason to be there and there's no evidence against him. I admit it was a shock to find out he was the killer, but the suspense would have been greater if they'd slowly realized something was off or that the evidence didn't match the person in custody.

That said... I do always appreciate the characters of Ruth and Nelson and their relationship, as well as Judy and Cathbad and the other supporting characters. And I do want to know whether Nelson follows his mother's advice.

A long time has passed since the last time I read a Ruth Galloway book. When I saw this listed, I thought "0hhhh..." I enjoyed the book more than I expected ( though I would have liked a little bit more down in the dirt archeology). I believe that anyone familiar with the character and setting would enjoy this installment in the series. In my opinion, someone who hasn't read any of the books could follow the story without any problem but familiarity with the characters would add to the experience. I'm glad I read this and I'm grateful to Netgalley and the publisher ( not to mention the author!) for making this electronic copy available.

I always look forward to a Ruth Galloway mystery and this one was so good. The author keeps you guessing and now I'm waiting for #14!!! Such great imperfect characters and plots to die for (sorry about that pun).

I'm always excited when a new Ruth Galloway novel comes out and this was no exception. I've yet to read a Ruth Galloway novel that wasn't absolutely wonderful. I was very pleased to see Ruth back at the University of North Norfolk (I really didn't like her living in Cambridge away from it all!) and doubly excited to see her team up with Nelson again. Griffiths is a master of misdirection and false leads and will leave you guessing until the very end. And can we talk about that ending?! Wow - when is #14 one coming out? I need to know what happens!

Reading an Elly Griffiths Ruth Galloway mystery is like visiting an old friend that you only see once a year. You are excited to see them and you pick up right where you left off as if you only saw each other yesterday. Another great outing in the series

This is a Ruth Galloway Book #13
I am both an Elly Griffiths and Ruth Galloway fan.
There is no doubt that Dr. Ruth Galloway is our favorite Forensic Archaeologist (However, I am sure very few of us have another archaeologist to love!)
This is a series that needs to be read as a series as it is sooo character driven. True there is always a mystery but the stories are truly character driven.
In this story Ruth has left Cambridge as she and Frank are no longer an item He has taken a job in the states and she returns to Norfolk with her 10 year old daughter Kate. Norfolk is also where Kate’s biological father DI Harry Nelson lives. Hmmm
This story starts when the Night Hawks find a body and some bones.
The plot plays a big role as we get closer to the end.

I received this advance readers copy from the publishers in exchange for a free and unbiased review.. This is the 13th book in the series featuring Ruth Galloway. Since I'd hadn't read any of this series before I struggled a little bit with getting into the book. I decided to go back and read book one which really helped me to learn about Ruth and DCI Nelson and other characters in this latest book. I ended up really enjoying this book once I had that background Ruth is the head of archaeologist at the University of North Norfolk and also helps out the police on some cases. She is called on this case when amateur archaeologist called "Night Hawks" uncover Bronze Age artifacts and a recently deceased body. DCI Nelson asked Ruth if she would help out with this case. What really becomes interesting in this mystery is that everything seems to come back to the new lecturer at the college, David Brown. A lecturer that Ruth hired and also always seems to be underfoot whenever Ruth has too be somewhere. Pick up this book and immerse yourself in a good mystery.

Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review.

I can't believe this is the 13th in the series! We see Dr. Galloway return to Norfolk, familiar ground at last. Ruth has taken Phil's spot and is now in charge of archaeology at the University of North Norfolk. Kate and Ruth have settled back with Flint into their cottage and life feels...normal. Ruth is working to become a department head and also has to grudgingly work with her new hire, David Brown-who somehow is becoming increasingly involved in everything Ruth is. When a group of nighttime metal detectorists discover a body, DCI Nelson becomes involved...which of course means Ruth will be involved. It was kind of fun watching Brown and Nelson puff their chests out around each other (although I suspect Nelson would jump in front of a car before admitting that!) when it comes to Ruth. As the murder site becomes an archaeology dig becomes a murder site, a web is woven tighter and tighter around Nelson, Ruth, Michelle, Brown, and everyone they are close to. A second murder site makes things even more complicated. This one was a return to the "normal" Galloway series pattern-I felt like the last one, set in a different place, was just too different (in my opinion!). I really liked the pacing and web weaving of this one. There are a couple of extra surprise twists that had my mouth open in surprise. Griffiths has been spinning quite a complicated tale with Nelson and Galloway for 13 books and I always think "there's no way to add another layer or complication" and I'm always wrong!! This was a great read, full of familiar faces. I like that as we've gotten to know our cast more, we get to see their perspectives too. It adds some welcome depth to the stories.

Ruth Galloway is back! In Elly Griffith’s 14th mystery novel featuring her, Ruth has returned to her North Norfolk cottage, with her daughter Kate, now 11, and their cat. After a fairly short time in Cambridge, she is back at the University of North Norfolk, now as Head of the Archaeology Department there, with a large corner office and her own coffee machine, though she doesn’t have much time to enjoy it, with a double murder-suicide (or is it a double murder?) in town, a dead body washed up on the Blakeney Point estuary, and a very old human skeleton found there too, also by a group of metal detectorists, the somewhat shady Night Hawks. When DCI Nelson (her friend and Kate’s father) calls on Ruth to look at the skull, she becomes involved in a complex mix of all these crimes, and plenty of suspects, secrets, and suspense ensue.

Thoroughly enjoyed this latest in the Ruth Galloway series. The twists and turns, coupled with the archaeology, are always a pleasure to read.

I love archaeology, so the description of this book drew me in immediately and the book did not disappoint! I had not read previous books in the series, but I didn't find that to be an issue. Some background might have been helpful, but it didn't detract from the story. A tight mystery, with enough personal interest to make me want to go back and read the earlier novels.

Night Hawks, by Elly Griffiths, is the latest in the Ruth Galloway series, and it does not disappoint. At the center of the book is professor Ruth Galloway who is once again immersed in solving murders having a connection to Galloway's job as a forensic archaeologist. Nelson, a detective and the father of Ruth's daughter, Kate, is part of the plot that examines the murder of a young man and a couple who were first thought to be victims of a murder-suicide. However, Ruth soon realizes that the couple were also murdered. The Night Hawks, young men who are metal detectorsists looking for old Roman coins and other items under cover of darkness, is a diverse group of searchers for ancient metal. To add to the rather dark cast of characters is the legend (or is it only a legend?) of a large black dog that is known to be a harbinger of death. As always, the identification of the murderer is Ruth's quest to solve. Griffith's books are skillfully and cleverly put together, and the characters in each book enrich the plot and sequence of events. Griffith's books are stellar mysteries that continue to meet every reader's high expectations.

Excellent book and the best in the series so far.The main characters are both dealing with issues such as being persuaded to retire and unreturned love or are they? Throughly enjoyable book.
