A really fun book with lots of creative crocheting. The descriptions are well done and easy to follow.

There are twelve Creative Crochet Projects included in this book. They range from practical scarves, cowls and beanies to a whimsical owl wrap. However, the six kid’s projects are the most amusing. Two mufflers convert into hamburgers and hot dogs. A swarm of bees fly over your sleeping baby. Everything is just so cute!

The projects vary in skill level. Some use new stitch variations I have never seen elsewhere. Once you get some crocheting practice, head over to the author’s website at crochetverse.com. She has some incredible kid’s Halloween and adult cosplay costume patterns on sale there. The Alien and the Slenderman are perfection. She also has over ten pages of free patterns to download.

Creative Crochet Projects oozes the author’s personality. The projects look like fun. 4 stars!

Thanks to Fox Chapel Publishing and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

This book contains vividly colored images and the directions are clear and precise. This book has projects that range simple enough for a beginner and progress to projects for a advanced skill level. I am a intermediate beginner and worked quickly through the easy projects, I’m currently working through a more advanced project. My novice teen was able to follow the instructions and chart to work through the basic beginner stitches with ease and completer his first project. A wonderful book for all skill levels and I look forward to working through more of the projects.

Creative Crochet Projects, by Stephanie Pokorny, contains a multitude of cute projects that would be especially fun for children to play with. I struggled to choose a pattern to test because I tend to like functional crochet and don't have children in my life, so I wasn't interested in a lot of the patterns.

I appreciated how there were stitch guides and examples at the beginning of the book. The book starts with easier projects and moves on to more complex projects, so if someone is interested in more of the patterns and works through chronologically, it's a good way to grow skills from a beginner level. Jumping into the middle of the book was a little more difficult for me - sometimes I found it challenging to discern which stitch I was building on.

The pictures are colorful, enjoyable, and helpful. I found the how-to sections (e.g. "How to Mattress Stitch") the most valuable. This would be a great book for someone looking to make novelty crochet items (e.g. hamburgers and watermelons) or crochet toys, decorations, and costume accessories for children. It's not as good a fit for those who like functional crochet geared toward adults.

Creative Crochet Projects is a project tutorial guide with 12 crochet projects by Stephanie Pokorny. Due out 1st May 2021 from Fox Chapel on their Landauer imprint, it's 96 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats.

This is a collection with a fun and *very* whimsical aesthetic. Crafters who are already familiar with her work from Crochetverse or Ravelry will find more fun and humorous in this collection. The projects are split into two sections: accessories to wear and playtime projects/toys.

The introduction is quite abbreviated and beginning crocheters will likely need to have access to support in the form of youtube videos, online instructions, or (best option) a real-life crochet guru. This will be especially important for left handed crafters because the book doesn't have any sort of illustrations or instructions for lefties.

The included projects run the gamut from beginner friendly to quite advanced sculptural projects. I would say most of them are toward the more demanding end of the spectrum. Tools and supplies will be easily sourced from most online or retail craft outlet or big box stores. It's worth noting that terms and instructions are given in USA standard and not UK. The table with hook sizes gives both US sizes and metric however.

This would make a good choice for public or school library acquisition, maker's groups, crafting groups, or for gifting to a crocheting friend. Four stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

A great source for crochet projects that are out of the ordinary, and take you from simple finger-crocheted scarves to very elaborate playmats and mobiles. However, while the book does take the reader through the basics of crochet, I wouldn't recommend this to a complete beginner, as the projects very quickly increase in difficulty, and after the first two or three patters, I'd say the rest were for intermediate or even advanced crocheters.

All the patterns are very clearly written out, and with lots of detailed photos, so if you like your scarves to be more whimsical than usual, this could definitely be the book for you.

This book is amazing, there are so many good projects in here and I have already started many of them. It has easy to follow instructions with so many different techniques. I like how they have the basics at the beginning so you know if it is English or American instructions. I am excited to start the finger crochet scarf, but going to finish all I have already started. great work Stephanie

My initial impression:

Colourful
Modern
Fresh
I actually laughed out loud at the hamburger scarf, it’s great fun.

There could be a few step by step photos in the guide to basic stitches, to make it useful. Showing a completed slip knot, and describing which end to pull to tighten the knot, does not guide anyone how to actually make one. Ditto for chainless foundation crochet. This is quite complicated, until you have mastered it. A series of photographs indicating where the hook should go and the anatomy of the stitch would be so useful.

It is worth noting that the author uses USA, not UK terms.

As is so common in the majority of craft books, there are zero instructions or even acknowledgment of left handed crocheters. I really wish they were included. As a self-taught left-handed crocheter you need to be told that some instructions will need to be reversed; as we crochet from left to right, not right to left. We crochet rounds in a clockwise direction, not anti-clockwise like right handers. However, this book of patterns would definitely be suitable for an intermediate crocheter (both right and left-handed) who has confidently mastered basic stitches and techniques. None are very complex patterns, most are quick and easy makes. The patterns are appealingly quirky and fresh.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

Great book on fun crochet projects! I loved that the pictures were so colorful and really showed off each design example. The crochet hook size and thread chart was super helpful, too. This was reviewed on my craft blog.

This is a GREAT book for anyone that wants to learn how to crochet. The author gave excellent detail around different yarn types and weights. She also references stitches, along with their abbreviations, and what a gauge swatch means and why it is important to your projects.
I found the patterns to be very easy to follow and look like great, fun projects that a beginner, and even an experienced crafter would enjoy. There is a lot of detail packed into this book and I would certainly buy or gift it.

I love most of the creative projects in this book. I can't wait to make the foldable burger and the owl wrap! The project instructions seem accurate and detailed, the pictures are clear and helpful, and the book layout was easy to follow and interesting. Thank you so much for this early review copy.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The views and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

This is kind of a hit or a miss honestly. Some people will love it- some people will think it childish and silly in a bad way. Honestly I feel the same way. Some patterns were just too bizazree for me to even think about giving a child. The owl shawl is beautiful and the little kitchen playset is adorable. For those two patterns alone I think the book is worth it.

This book has a variety of projects that can be accomplished by beginning crocheters and even those who are looking for novel accessories and play items. The step-by-step instructions even include photographs at points that will assist the crocheter with producing a successful outcome.

This book is not only good for personal use but will also make a wonderful gift. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by the publisher and Net Galley but the thoughts expressed are my own.

Creative Crochet Projects best for crochet babies

Posted on February 20, 2021 by michellelovatosbookreviews, world's first book color commentator, book reviews with a twist

Confession: I wish I had all the time in the world – and – I hope God doesn’t take me home anytime soon.
Maybe this is every person’s desire. Perhaps it’s just my own. All I know is, there simply isn’t enough time in life for me to enjoy all the wonderful things I am blessed enough to become entranced by.
First on my list of wonders is watching my daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren grow into incredible human beings with an infinitesimal level of potential to offer our world.
Second is my ability to write for myself and others.
Third, my opportunity to reach out and share my love with my community through charity and my part-time job at a large craft retail store.
And fourth, crochet; my favorite craft because I learned it from my great grandmother when I was eight years old.
That brings me to Fox Chapel and Landauer publishing’s brand new book, Creative Crochet Projects: 12 playful projects for beginners and beyond by Stephanie Pokomy.
This book is an interesting collection of crochet patterns because it incorporates a variety of crochet project types instead of focusing on just one method.
Unlike the beginner’s two-hour amigurumi-only crochet book I am writing, Pokomy’s book shares patterns for amigurumi – which is the Japanese art of crocheting (or knitting) small, stuffed yarn-made toys – along with patterns for other popular items, like a hooded double crochet scarf made into an owl’s head; a darling turtle tape-measure cover and a twisting scarf made of that giant yarn we sell periodically that so many customers come in asking me what to make with it.
(I’m the crochet and knitting teacher.)
Pokomy offers a traditional beanie pattern, an adorable bee hive mobile pattern, and just about the cutest pattern for an amigurumi-scarf mix pattern I’ve ever seen.
What I mean by the “amigurumi-scarf” pattern – an oxymoron to crochet aficionados – is that the scarf is made up of various parts of a hamburger: Bun, lettuce, cheese, etc and is constructed like an amigurumi toy. But instead of being created with small-gauge yarn, this scarf is made of sport-weight – or your average Red Heart or Big Twist yarn that is attached to make a scarf. As an amigurumi toy, this same pattern would call for a small gauge yarn – I would use Aunt Lydia’s #10 – and would be created the same way. The kick is that when this scarf is stacked upon itself, it becomes a hamburger.
Adorable.
If the fold-up hamburger wasn’t cute enough, Pokomy also throws in a hot dog pattern designed the same way.
Pokomy’s Creative Crochet Projects: 12 playful projects for beginners and beyond certainly exemplifies its name. I’m not sure I would suggest this book for a just-starting-out, brand-spanking-new crocheter.
However. I think I would recommend it for the beginning crocheter who is familiar with single, double, and half-double stitches and understands the basics of how to read a crochet pattern.
This book is fully equipped with how-to instructions and is doable for any level, but it would be far more fun to accomplish with a little experience under one’s belt.
I’d go with the crocheter who’s getting bored with the same ol’, same ol’ and is ready to start reaching out to new project ideas.
All in all, Creative Crochet Projects is a win and is a great present for the wife of a confused crafter’s husband.
I know I am going to adapt Pokomy’s hamburger scarf pattern back to amigurumi yarn size and stack it on my shelf of foods that I’m making for my wellness-expert daughter to use in her practice. When she has clients that want to talk about hamburgers, my daughter will have a perfect visual for which her patients can remember her advice.
