Thank you to NetGalley for an e-ARC of Raised in the Kitchen by Carrian Cheney.
Carrian Cheney is a food blogger, wife, mother, chef, and author. Along with her husband, Cade, she manages the food blog Oh, Sweet Basil. Raised in the Kitchen is a beautifully illustrated cookbook complete with helpful hints and tips for including family in daily meal preparation. From her inspiring wisdom, mothers can picture themselves spreading the love of cooking and baking to the littlest family members. All of the recipes include a mouth-watering illustration and easy-to-follow instructions. Each recipe consists of a level to alert the reader to more complicated menus. Every food item listed is easy to find in local grocery stores, and many recipes use items regularly on hand. This cookbook is one that I would love to have in my kitchen and one that I would give as a gift.

Do you have food bloggers that you follow on Instagram or somewhere else? Oh Sweet Basil is one of my very favorite food accounts to follow. I love how real they are on this. They talk about the good, the bad, and of course, the food. And Carrian Cheney is the absolute sweetest. I love her!

This cookbook is one of the very few that I would actually buy for myself. I love the way they put it together. It’s a book you can have out when you’re in the kitchen with your kids. And not only will they learn something from it, you will too.

And I love that there are personal family experiences in this book too. This would be a great book to grab for mom for Mother’s Day in a couple of weeks! And you can also check out Our Sweet Basil Kitchen. It’s one of my favorite cookbooks.

I was sent an e-copy of Raised in the Kitchen as a gift from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

“When you’re no longer there with your kids, don’t you want a way to still be there?” Carrian Cheney states that cooking with your kids is a way to still be there, even when you no longer are, because they will repeat the process and make the same foods with their own kids. She says it’s not about food, it’s about connecting with your kids. (Intro)

This is more than just a cookbook of tantalizing recipes with beautiful pictures. Surprisingly, it is also a book to read. Articles are interspersed throughout the book on a variety of topics and connected to the recipes nearby. I did not expect to find heart-warming parenting tips in a cookbook such as, “I wonder how much more we could do as parents if we gently steadied instead of always being so quick to react.” (p. 63) She encourages everyone to make the most of every moment together, “At some point in your childhood, you and your friends went outside to play together for the last time, and none of you knew it.” (p. 181) And to be present with family, “When at work, be at work; when at home, be home.” (p. 187)

There are also a lot of helpful tips throughout with full pages devoted to topics like baking bread, potatoes, recipe substitutions, chicken, salt, meat, knife skills, and cake. I learned some things from her tips on baking bread and using yeast. I also learned that yogurt, mayonnaise, applesauce, or mashed bananas could be a substitute for sour cream, depending on the recipe.

The author refers readers to her website: ohsweetbasil.com for tips on pantry lists, kitchen tool recommendations, cleaning schedules, and more recipes.

Included in this book are many classic recipes: French toast, banana bread, dinner rolls, homemade salsa, broccoli salad, baked beans, macaroni salad, potato salad, fettucine alfredo, chicken noodle soup, chicken parmesan, pot roast, steak fajitas, peach crisp, apple dumplings, Oreo pie, chocolate chip cookies, and sugar cookies.

There are also several more unique recipes: Coconut Buttermilk Syrup, cheese bread doodles, pan fried tortellini, Café Rio chicken salad, cherry pie bars, carmelitas, lemon drop cookies, Nutella stuffed cupcakes, and raspberry sweet rolls.

This feels like a family favorites cookbook, in a good way. The kind you turn to for comfort foods and pass down to your kids. I give it five delicious stars. Thanks to Shadow Mountain Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC to use for my review.

Great book for families! Written with lots of tips and info for parents who are looking to expand their kitchen skills and/or teach their kids. Lots of delicious sounding and approachable recipes are separated into chapters on breakfast, bread, sides, pasta & pizza, main dishes, and desserts. Every recipe has a full color photo, and they all seem like things many kids would be willing to try. Excited to cook from this book with my family.

The Covid lifestyle has brought many families back to rallying in the kitchen and Raised in the Kitchen is more than just a cookbook hoping to aid in that. It is a guide to bring families together through the art of teaching kitchen skills and building on them to mor complex tasks. It starts with very basic kitchen recipes such as eggs... and builds a sense of accomplishment and confidence to help you prepare full scale family meals. The illustrations will help to inspire this family journey to kitchen confidence by all family members !

I love Carrian and Cade, so I a was really excited for this new cookbook. I was a little disappointed in the actual cookbook. I was expecting more step by step pictures or instructions for cooking, especially for younger kids. That was my perception of how it was going to be when I first received the book. Reading the description of the book, I can tell I thought wrong. Maybe it was wishful thinking, but I was hoping it would become a new treasured recipe book as I taught my young daughter how to cook, but I felt like most of the recipes were a little old for her. They looked really good. I enjoyed some of the variations of recipes they gave and the hints for her kids. More pictures of some of the foods would have been nice.

Special thanks to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for providing me with ARC.

A family-focused cookbook? Complete with stories and kid-friendly cooking tips? The second I saw this on NetGalley, I knew that our family needed it!

Raised the Kitchen by Carriann Cheney is a refreshing take on family cooking. It’s filled with a huge range of recipes - from the healthy to the not-so-healthy - and literally all of them are family-friendly! I really liked that these were all recipes that would be easy to make, and ones where kids can get involved with the cooking of them. Cheney uses her own family to help share the recipes and the stories behind them. Cheney wants to help foster a love for cooking and I loved that the cookbook was filled with ways to so that also help create lasting memories. From a cookbook standpoint, the recipes are easy to make and well-explained. I liked that every single recipe had a picture to go with it too!

A huge thanks to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for the free electronic ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

This is more than a cookbook! It is an inspirational book suggesting that families spend precious moments together in the kitchen and build memories. There are stories scattered throughout the recipes. Some stories will make you laugh and others will touch your heart and dampen your eyes! In the introduction, the author suggests that the recipes are presented from one loving family to another. The author hopes that families will use these recipes as a guide to creating their own stories – cooking together and sharing fun times over good food and great mealtimes.

The book is versatile as it is divided into sections: Breakfast, Breads, Sides, Pasta and Pizza, Main Dishes, and Desserts. It has an extensive index. The double-spread pages show recipes, dishes, and the family cooking together. The recipes are easy to follow. There are brief captions and tips throughout the book where the children in the family have added their take on the recipe or family event in the kitchen. If you have a picky eater, there is even a guide to help these eaters expand their food likes!

This is a treasure of a cookbook. It is the perfect gift for newlyweds and for new parents! But, it is also a great guide to cooks that want to improve their skills!

Great cookbook! I read through the entire book in just a few hours, and I did read the entire cookbook. There are beautiful pictures of the Cheney family along with the amazing food, with a picture for every single recipe (a huge plus and must for any cookbook, in my opinion)! There are great tips throughout the book, along with a short backstory/intro to each recipe. The book is divided into recipe types and each section is divided into level 1, 2, and 3 recipes (basic through a little more advanced, though none seem overly complicated). There are little notes from the Cheney kids as well, though, to me, most of them didn't read like they were really written by a kid (other than the ones for the teenager). The recipes are each written very clearly, with easy-to-follow directions. I've seen a few of these recipes on their Instagram but some I haven't. I will probably purchase a physical copy of this book when it's released so that I have it in my own kitchen. I look forward to trying out every single recipe in this book! They all look amazingly delicious!! There are great tips for involving kids in your cooking and meal prep to not only teach them valuable lessons but to have quality family time as well! Excellent cookbook that I'm excited to have as part of my collection and to prepare some of these delicious-looking dishes for my own family!

Wow... loved it. From the Italian dishes to the AMAZING desserts I just fell in love. Gorgeous pictures!

What did I like? The cover is very family friendly but it was the photography in this book that had me salivating. Scrumptious breakfast to yummy mains and then salivating desserts. I loved it!

Would I recommend or buy? Lover of Italian foods then you will love these recipes! I’d buy it for the desserts alone! Family friendly and just amazing looking food! Five huge stars!

I received a complimentary copy to read and voluntarily left a review!

This cookbook is a good one to keep around if you are wanting to start cooking from scratch more and get the family involved. Every recipe has a picture with it (always a plus in my opinion) and has tips through out the entire book. With each recipe, she has a level skill so that you will know if it’s an easy one to try out with the kids helping, or even just yourself if you haven’t ever made it before. There is a good variety of recipes included, even some basics for storage (like pancake mix). My favorite part about this cookbook though is that it didn’t have anything extremely difficult, rare ingredients (only saw one ingredient one time, that I haven’t seen before), or odd recipes that my family wouldn’t try. It truly is family friendly and full of knowledgeable tidbits.
