This book is pretty crazy. Cannibalism, sexual servitude, zombies, magic, mommy issues, and my personal favorite, cats the size of horses. I wish there was less going on, honestly. There are aspects that I would have like to learn more about, the Star Eater, the magic system, but what a wild ride overall. Perfect for sci-fi fans who enjoy a lot of world-building.

This was such a weird, unique book! Star Eater combines some of the best elements of mystery, fantasy, and horror, along with a powerful, determined main character. That being said, I do think that the way Star Eater combined several genre elements made the plot a bit confusing and drawn-out. Star Eater is set in a fantasy world, with Sisters who can use lace magic by basically eating bits of their dead mothers. It's really interesting how the cannibalistic element was used in the book, and it set a creepy tone to the plot. The thriller/mystery aspect, on the other hand, didn't fit as well with the rest of the book. The main character, Elfreda, agrees to spy on the council of Sisters in exchange for not having to get pregnant. A big part of the book is Elfreda going to lavish parties and collecting information about the women there. There was a lot of time spent on describing these parties, as well as the situations Elfreda gets herself into during them. This part wasn't as interesting to me; I was much more interested in the overarching problems of Elfreda's powers and visions. I liked the beginning and ending a lot, but I did get bored in the middle. 3.5/5 stars
