High Treason at the Grand Hotel
A Fiona Figg Mystery
by Kelly Oliver
A well written historical mystery. A book that holds you from the first page . Charming characters and many twists and turns , unexpected humour making this a very enjoyable spy mystery making a quick and easy read.

I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. A good women's fiction historical/drama. Great weekend read. Love the cover.

Fiona Figg in a Parisian pursuit, this second murder mystery from Kelly Oliver, High Treason at the Grand Hotel, was such a fun read. An entertaining tale of espionage and undercover detective work, this Fiona Figg mystery is perfect as a stand-alone or to be read after Villainy in Vienna. Set in 1917, detective Fiona Figg becomes embroiled in a missing person case, a jewellery theft, high treason, and even embarks on a jail stint. With numerous twists, rich dialogue, and fully-formed characters, High Treason at the Grand Hotel has me itching for the next Fiona Figg adventure!

I requested this without realizing it is part of a series. I started reading it and put it down as i realized I didn't understand anything going on.
It would not be fair of me to read this and give this a review, based on how I have not read the previous books in the series. Thus, I decided to DNF and I will not be giving it a proper review.

I have mixed feeling about this book.
The first half (or so) was annoyed me because the main character, who was considered skilled enough to be sent as a secret agent, was a classic TSTL (too stupid to live) person.
I held on and kept reading hoping for an improvement.
The story did improve (somewhat) in the second half when she started being really pushed by circumstances.
Not a favorite. over all.

Generally speaking, wartime isn’t my favorite setting for historical mysteries, but I thoroughly enjoyed this story.
Rather than a standard murder mystery, this is more of a spy craft themed novel, or perhaps spy craft adjacent, since heroine Fiona isn’t technically a spy.
All of the disguises and “acting” she does felt a little hokey and contrived, as did the Mata Hari plot line, but it’s still a fun story, the setting was well-rendered, and Fiona is a good—if very standard—protagonist for the genre.
I appreciated that the book doesn’t spend too much time lurching around in a romantic subplot, and also that it takes some time to delve into details (Fiona loves hats! Paris as backdrop!) that make the setting and atmosphere richer, which for me is probably the most important facet of a historical mystery. I look forward to reading more of this series.

Great WWII cozy mystery! I found this story to be so fun and entertaining. The characters are wonderful and the setting is amazing. Plenty of red herrings to keep me guessing. I received a copy from NetGalley and the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical mystery with humor

I did not read the first book but this book gave me enough information and flashbacks that I had no problem following the story. This book has history but also had so much humor, I was laughing out loud at some of Fiona’s shenanigans. I appreciated the author’s explanation at the end of the book telling what was true and what was fictional. I am looking forward to the arm chair travel in the next book along with the humor trying to solve the mystery. A great book for mystery lovers and history fans.

A beautifully quick and easy read! It was so intriguing and fun, an absolute blast! The writing was easy to follow and the characters so fun.

Sherlock Holmes but make it Fiona Figg!
I always love a good mystery I can get my hands on, and what's better than a Sherlock Holmes-esque, boss woman named Fiona Figg to go about solving mysteries?
This was such a fun mystery book that takes you all over Paris in the mind of Fiona Figg to solve the mystery. You're right there with her to go along with the adventure and have a lot of fun while doing it!
Thank you to NetGalley and Level Best Books for the earc in return for an honest review.

I love mystery and historical fiction, and this book presents both beautifully.
I hope the rest of this authors books are just as good...if they are I have a new author to follow.
It took less than one day to finish this book. I found no fault other than it being short...I’d have loved more immediately.
Thank you NetGalley for the review copy of this ebook.

thanks to netgalley for the e-arc.
this was okay. i picked it up because it was set in 1917 paris, but i did expect more of the story. it felt very predictable for a mystery novel but i still enjoyed it for what it was.

Such fun and enjoyable read. I needed something fun to read and this book truly delivered. I was so engrossed in the story that finished reading the book in one day.
Fiona Figg a fling clerk, sometimes English spy is sent to Paris during World War I to gather information about the infamous Frederik Fredriks, a suspected German spy. Her orders are to follow him , not engage with him, to to use any disguises or getting herself into trouble.Nothing could be further from reality.
Fiona encounters Germans, spies, interacts with Mata Hari, solves the mystery of stolen jewels at the hotels, helps puts away a serial killer.
She is a great character, entertaining and amusing.
I enjoyed this book very much.

I didn’t realize this was the second book in the series but I didn’t feel like I was missing to much although I’m sure some backstory would have been nice.
Fiona is a file clerk turned spy during WWI and she travels to Paris to take on her nemesis who she thinks is the spy known as the Black Panther. There’s a couple subplots with twists and turns to keep the book interesting as it does on.
I like Fiona’s character, she’s spunky with a love of disguises. I really liked the WWI setting as well, we have so many stories of female spies during WWII it not enough during this incredibly interesting time for women, where they’re really getting a role outside of the home for the first time since so many of the men are off fighting.
I’ll be going back and reading the first book and I’m going to be waiting for Fiona’s next adventure.

A historical mystery, set in Paris in 1917. Fiona is a file clerk who is also a secret agent. She is a wonderful character and I really enjoyed this one. I hadn’t read the previous book in the series but I don’t think this impacted my enjoyment in any way. It wasn’t a particularly fast paced story but it made for an enjoyable, cosy read. I would definitely read the next instalment in the series.

I really enjoyed this book.
Loved the writing style and it was a fun read for a sunday afternoon.
It was not extremly thrilling or excited, but I still enjoyed this read. Especially the writing style made me want to read more.

After several starts and stops, I tried reading this book to no avail. The lead character is too flighty to be a British intelligence agent. Any try as I might to suspend disbelief, this book did not do it for me. I doubt I will read others in this series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this historical mystery as it's fun to read and engrossing.
An interesting cast of characters, a vivid historical background and a solid mystery that kept me guessing.
I want to read other books in this series.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

1917 Paris seems very exciting to Fiona Figg. Sent to pursue the Black Panther, she has been given strict orders which she immediately flouts.
A light hearted spy mission sending a file clerk from London (very condescending male bosses by the way) who treat her as just someone available and not a very good one at that and keeping with the times, Fiona herself is just grateful for the opportunity knowing fully well, she is quite capable of handling the assignment with a few distractions of course!
This was a story full of dry wit and humor (very reminscent of British wit) and was a entertaining story told. Based on a lot of actual facts - the Black Panther did exist in spy networks, Mata Hari was in reality a female spy and these are woven into the story very well.

Fiona Figg, file clerk as well as secret agent that seems to be where she shouldn’t be pretty much every time. When she is needed in Paris to follow a Possible spy Frederick Fredricks, she carries with her an arrangement of disguises such as wigs and hats. It seems that as usual, Fiona is trying her best to do a great job but trouble waits her at every corner. This time caught red handed with a bloody paper knife over a dead countess, she has a lot of explaining to do. Can she get the much needed info back to her boss or will she be tried for murder. The book is full of great historical information that is correct as well as enough humor to keep you entertained and engrossed in the story not wanting it to end. Another 5++ star book.
Thank you to netgalley as well as the author/publisher for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
