I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I liked the art style in this book. Simple and colorful and different. The story was good and there was some good information about the Aurora at the end.

Seeking an aurora is a fun tale about a boy who is awaken in the middle of the night by his dad. They go on a surprise adventure. I loved the relationship and bonding experience between father and son.

Having seen the Aurora Borealis as a teenager, I can tell you that few things I’ve ever seen or heard are quite like it. The crackling sound, the vibrant light that radiates from the sky, the sheer size of it all happening on a cold winter’s night.
Seeking an Aurora is clever in that it doesn’t define if it’s the northern or southern Aurora that our boy and his father are seeing. While written and illustrated by an Australian we can assume she intended it to be south; but it works just as well for the northern hemisphere.
I wouldn’t have thought there was a colour palette in the world that could show the glimmering light on the dark night sky of the Aurora. I was wrong. The pastels that are used here are brilliant. The page is obviously coloured in black or deep purples and blues; then our characters and the Aurora blended overtop (I think anyways) and it pops so well. I adore the look and feel of the pages in this enchanting children’s book.
A perfect before bedtime story for any little one. The kind of book that a child might keep long into their adult years because it’s beautiful and feels like it is imparting a secret of the Earth to the reader.
I hope to one day see the Aurora borealis again. I live almost far enough north in Canada; but inside a city too large to see them well if they are seen this far south. In the meantime this book is a gorgeous representation of the solar winds and the truly glorious colours they bring to our sky.

Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is an honest and unbiased review.

"Seeking an Aurora" is a perfect story for bedtime. The illustrations are glorious, with such rich descriptions that you could close your eyes and still see the vivid colours in your mind! The wonder of this night leaves a lot of space for wonder and imagination to take flight--perfect for sending kids off to pleasant dreams.

The story was great, a perfect bonding moment between father and daughter. The one annoying thing is the font and spacing throughout the book was very bothersome.

Late into the night a father nudges his sleeping son awake. Dad pulls on his son's jacket, woolly hat, and mittens. "We're off to find an Aurora," he said.

The two quietly sneak out on sleeping mom and new baby sister and into the cold freezing night. The stars and moon are suspended high in the sky as father and son ascend to the top of Bracken's Hill. They take a front row seat on the stoney ground and turn their attention upward. The aurora borealis concert begins! Large, colourful dancing lights glow, glimmer and swirl across the pitch black sky. It is such a magical sight that no words are spoken just silent amazement at the spectacular light show that is before them. On the way back home dad is so energized by witnessing this Aurora phenomenon that he cannot stop talking.

This story will delight all ages. The illustrations are colourful and draw you right into the adventure. They are printed on FSC- certified paper with vegetable-based inks.

This book brought back childhood memories for me. When I was little my mom would come into the bedroom and awaken her three little girls and tell us she had something very special to share. She would wrap us in warm quilts and sit us on the backyard clothesline stand. We all huddled together to watch "God's fireworks" perform their magic right before our eyes. Mom always brought a thermos of hot chocolate with her to warm us as we sat mesmerized by this incredible concert. Not only would the colours swish and sway but the aurora made crackling sounds as it danced across the sky.

There is a brief description of an Aurora at the end of the book for those who wish to dig deeper into this fascinating natural event. I love the book and highly recommend it.

This is reminiscent of Owl Moon - a quiet night, a child and a father, walking through the frost. The art is also really beautiful.

Before even opening this book I was already enchanted by it, with that cover giving such a lovely glimpse of what the pages contain. The story of Seeking an Aurora is simple, but no less profound for its simplicity, and the sparse words chosen are perfect for building on the whimsy the illustrations also provide. There's an inherent magic in taking a casual hike in the night's late hours with someone you love and are loved by, made all the more wonderful when the destination is such an enchanting part of nature as the aurora.

This picture book is one of the few that have such brilliant and descriptive illustrations that they convey the story on their own. The richness of the pastels, and scenes the artist chose to depict, tell the story perfectly in increments, showing us everything vital to the journey from bed to wilderness. The representations of the night sky and the aurora are truly breathtaking and would be wonderful as art prints on their own. I originally read this as an ARC, but will be buying a physical copy to add to my shelf of beautiful picture books.

I received this advance review copy in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author, illustrator, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity.

Beautifully illustrated picture book that gently describes the wonder of seeing an aurora for the first time. While the feeling was accurate, I'm not sure this book would make a whole lot of sense to small children who had never seen an aurora. Perhaps it could be used as a part of a pre-K or K level science class?

Gorgeous art done with pastels and a simple storyline introduce young readers to the aurora winter lights. A brief end section explains the origin of these amazing displays— called the aurora borealis above the North Pole and aurora australis above the South Pole. A treat for children and adults alike!
