This is the first book of a new series and the first book I have read by this author but it will not be the last. Ally has come back home after her fiancé and business partner ran of with all their money and the vet tech. After her grandfather fell and broke his hip she decided it was better to stay close to him and bought out a retiring veterinarian's practice. Things are not going so well for Ally and then she finds the body of her newest client. If that was not bad enough Grandpa who is a bit obsessed with true crime has decided to investigate on his own. Along with trying to keep grandpa out of trouble, run her vet practice and keep her feelings for the cute detective in check Ally must solve the murder before she is next. A must read for cosy mystery readers.

Dogged by Death written by Laura Scott is an enjoyable outing as the first installment of A Furry Friends Mystery series.
Ally Winter has returned to her hometown of Willow Creek, Wisconsin where she has bought the local Veterinary practice. I appreciated the details about the (not always glamorous) day to day efforts of Ally to revive the business. Often amateur sleuths in these stories never seem to spend much time at their actual jobs.
While the mystery is not particularly strong in this introductory story, I loved all the other elements. Ally's partner in crime solving is her grandfather Oscar, and he is a delight in every way.
Ally reconnects with a few of her high school acquaintances and adopts an adorable Boxer named Roxy.
I am really looking forward to spending more time with all of these characters.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and Crooked Lane Publishing for an honest review.

Dogged by Death is a lighthearted murder mystery. Ally Winter has just moved back to her hometown after her fiancé and partner left town with all their money and their veterinary assistant. She has purchased a Veterinary Practice and is trying to get the business going. Ally is doing grooming, dog walking and boarding until she can get this business profitable. Ally and her Grandfather become involved in a murder investigation after Ally finds her client murdered while entering his house to walk his ex-wife’s dog. This man had been in an argument with her grandfather the previous night at the home where he lives with 3 older woman. The detective in the murder case is a former classmate of Ally. They are in constant contact with the detective as he warns them to let him solve the case. Ally brings the dog of the murdered man home with her and used him in their search for the killer. This trio faces danger as they work to solve the case. This book is an entertaining mystery in a small town.

Fun start to what promises to be a good series. My biggest criticism was the horribly sappy blurb about the book written with terrible puns! But if that doesn't turn you off, you will be pleasantly surprised by the actual book being well written and 99% pun-free! A wonderful mix of generations from 8 to 80 that are appropriate and interesting. I enjoyed learning about the veterinary business and all Ally did to succeed. I loved the granddaughter-Grandfather detective teaming after Ally discovers a murder. With such good characters, an interesting business (and interesting customers), and complicated murder clues, the book was a delightful read and will be enjoyed by a wide age range.

I appreciate Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review Laura Scott's DOGGED BY DEATH (A FURRY FRIENDS MYSTERY #1).

I enjoyed this book. I liked reading about all the animals. I liked the characters especially Gramps. The mystery is interesting and so is the investigating that Ally and Gramps does. I was surprised by who the bad guy was. #DoggedbyDeath #NetGalley

Another favorite by a great author. The plot of the story was very well written. The author really draws the reader in as you read. I felt like I was an unnamed character in the story. I cannot wait for another story to read.

I really loved the characters. Gramps (Oscar) is, well, a real character -- a Vietnam veteran who watches too much Dateline and reads too many true crime books and fancies himself an amateur detective. His granddaughter, Dr. Ally Winter, is a veterinarian (yes, a vet & a vet) who returned to her small hometown after her ex-husband steals their money and runs off with the vet tech from their joint veterinary practice in the big city. She winds up getting dragged into a murder investigation in an attempt to keep her meddlesome grandfather safe. Ally, Gramps, and Noah, the ACTUAL detective in charge of the case, are all likable characters. Of course, Roxy the boxer is the best character and she ultimately helps solve the case.

This definitely smacks of “first in a series”. I find that a lot of cozies (and probably other series but I don’t read many other serial works in other genres) suffer from the same first in the series tropes. It always seems like the characters make some of the most outlandish of choices in these first forays. Ally and her grandfather both keep digging and digging and poking their noses in places even after some pretty dangerous and threatening things have happened. The motive for murder also seemed weak to me. While the world-building and character development were good, I think the basic murder mystery plot left a bit to be desired. However, I liked the characters enough to read more when the next book is released. I am quite certain that the balancing necessary for the first book in a series is a tough one so I try not to judge too harshly on the first books.

All in all, it has the potential to be a fun cozy mystery with a lot of animals involved since the main character is a veterinarian. There was a definite hint to some romance with the detective. I really hope the teensy tiny hint to another possible love interest doesn’t go anywhere since I am definitely not a fan of love triangles. Time will tell on that front. I didn’t realize until I read the author’s bio that she is considered a Christian fiction author. Nothing in the book seemed overtly Christian to me. It was a pleasant, clean cozy mystery with the potential for a lot of intriguing adventures in the future.

An excellent read. Lovable characters. Great small town. Believable story line. Loved the old friends become new friends vibe. Warm, cozy read. And the animals were a wonderful addition to the story.

Dr. Ally Winter has taken over Furry Friends Veterinary practice since the previous vet retired. After a bad breakup and heavy financial losses, Ally moved to Willow Bluff, Wisconsin to be close to her Gramps (Oscar), who’s recovering from hip surgery and living at a nice assisted living ranch. The three widows who also reside there take good care of him and provide humor to the story. Gramps is fascinated by true crime novels, news, and TV shows.

Ally is barely making ends meet and has started grooming pets and pet walking to make extra income. When she goes to walk Roxy, a beautiful female boxer, imagine her horror when she finds her scam artist owner murdered in cold blood. Roxy appears to be the only witness to the crime. True to his nature, Gramps is chomping at the bit for he and Ally to investigate.

I just couldn’t get into Detective Noah Jorgensen. His personality rubbed me wrong from beginning to end because he was so rigid and rude. I loved Ally, Gramps, and Roxy. Gramps is Ally’s champion and she his, and they have a wonderful relationship, and are persistent about solving the murder. The characters who seem likely suspects certainly do their share to cast suspicion upon themselves making the elimination process dicey. The author does a good job of creating a tangled web, for sure. I did figure out the culprit around three-fourths of the way through the story; however, I suspected a couple of other people before that. All in all, this is an entertaining story that both furry friend lover’s and cozy mystery fans will enjoy.

I honestly reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Crooked Lane Publishing. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you.

A Grandfather/Granddaughter crime fighting team is a great new twist for Laura Scott's A Furry Friends Mystery series. 'Dogged by Death' brings veterinarian Ally Winter back to Wisconsin to be near her grandfather and recover from a disastrous former relationship. She purchases the client list and clinic of the town's previous vet and proceeds to try to build up her business. She becomes involved in murders which her grandfather is anxious to solve, becomes a target herself and frustrates the local detective assigned to the case who gave her an unfortunate childhood nickname. Overall this is a delightful beginning to a series, and I look forward to learning more about both Ally and Noah's back stories.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. The opinions express in this review are entirely my own.

Dogged by Death by Laura Scott was a fun and campy cozy mystery read. I love that this new series features a grandfather and granddaughter crime-fighting team! I liked the main character, Ally, and that she is a veterinarian. I also liked how the author incorporated the clinic into the background, which added more to the story and fun in reading the book.

I look forward to reading more in this new series.

Dogged By Death is about a girl named Ally Winter who moves back to her home town after her engagement and business falls to shambles. As she is trying to start over with her veterinary career, she needs to take on dog walking to make ends meet. When she goes to her clients house, she finds him dead and herself smack in the middle of a murder investigation. With the help of her true crime obsessed grandpa, Ally works to find the killer.

This story was filled with twists and turns. There was a lot of characters so it was hard to keep track. The important characters were described in great detail that allowed for them to be remembered. I can usually see the plot twists coming but there was one in here that caught me slightly off guard. I truly enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the next one.

-Thank you Netgalley.com and Crooked Lane Books for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

There is a small typo near the end when the detective asks the officer to book the killer. The first name is wrong when I asks "Do you understand your rights?"

I have mixed feelings about this book.
I have chosen in based on the dog on the cover and that was the most disappointing part of the book as the vet part was not really convincing.
A young female vet returns to her small town life and takes over the local vet clinic. Nearby living great father is obsessed with crime solving books and when a murder occurs in town everyone gets involved.
It's entertaining but nothing special or worth a reread.

Such a fun story! Yes someone dies and Ally gets involved. But the book has some great characters and makes you like them. The detective is an example. You can't help liking him even as his eye twitches. And Gramps is so adorable. He and the widows add humor to the hunt for the guilty person. I thought the book was fun to read and a good story.

I’m pretty excited for another cozy mystery with animals!

Witty, enjoyable read like a cozy mystery book should read. Characters who make you laugh, you find relatable and enjoy their story make it that much more enjoyable. Fur kids make anything better.

A fun new cozy series. Easy reading furlong cold nights. Engaging characters and quick mystery. Good for a quick read without delving too deeply into motives.

What a fun new mystery series, featuring a grandfather and granddaughter team. Ally, the granddaughter, is a vet struggling with her new clinic after her fiancé broke the engagement and left Ally broke and living back in her hometown. I loved the dynamic between Ally, her grandpa and the widow he shares a home with. Plus she is a veterinarian and I enjoy books with dogs as characters.
It's a quick read and I hope Laura Scott writes the next in the series soon.
Thanks to NetGalley for my ARC of this book.

Much Cuteness....
A series debut for A Furry Friends Mystery series and introducing vet Ally Winter. Things are not going well for Ally who has returned to Willow Bluff to care for her grandfather only to find more grief and a murder on her hands. Can Ally solve the mystery with the help of much doggie antics and shenanigans? A fun cosy mystery, much cuteness and a promising start to the series.

A grandaughter/grandfather sleuthing team, a small town with quirky and lovable characters, animals, and a mystery that keeps you guessing - a perfect cozy! Ally and Gramps are on the trail of a murderer who won't hesitate to make them the next victims.

I loved everything about the book - Ally is a veterinarian who has moved back to her hometown after losing her boyfriend and her business. Gramps is living in a independent living residence with three widows who are adorable and funny! There's never a dull moment with Gramps on the case since he's a big fan of crime shows like Dateline. Ally has to keep him out of trouble and find out who murdered a local scam artist. The vet clinic provides a great background and I enjoyed reading about the people and animals who came into the clinic.

I'm looking forward to the next book.
