This is a children's book that I read to my twin boys. The pictures was cute, and my boys loved when the shoes started talking. I think the message in this book is good for everyone (Kids and Adults). While I was reading this book I started thinking about when I am not patience. I also remember back when I was in school and my problem leg never stopped jumping while I was standing in line. This is a great book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Boys Town Press) or author (Jennifer Law) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

Written by an elementary counselor, who has been an educator for over 15 years, Jennifer Law shares strategies for students needing help with practicing Patience. 2 new friends teach young Gabe how to and why being patient is so important. Perfect for students, teachers, counselors, and therapists.

You better already have patience when you pick up this book. It is overly long. It follows the typical pattern found in a Boys Town book. It presents a problem, tells you how to cope with the problem, and gives three examples of what could happen and what one could do. The lesson is fine, it works, but the story is way way way too long. I realize the books about practicing patience and waiting for the next thing but you have so many antsy pants in story time. I just don’t think this one would work. It could work for a classroom setting or at home but in general get a better editor or change up your formula.

An interesting book with strategies for children on how to remain patient. Nice for any child who is learning their way and struggling to be patient. The illustrations are also adorable!

I have read a number of books from boys town press and this is a typical example of their titles. I love that they have written a book to help teach children patience and their books always have a helpful message and useful tips in the back for parents. I teach an inclusive preschool class and waiting is a skill we often have to teach. I think I could use this book as a tool in my classroom if I focused on just a few pages. The description says suitable for Pre-K - 5th Grade. In my opinion, though some preschool children may enjoy this book, it is quite wordy and covers quite a lot of material so would ideally be suited to 1st grade and up. I'd love a scaled down version for 2-5 year olds.

Patience can be hard, especially when your ready to go. Standing in lines and paying attention can be difficult and sometimes boring. Practicing Patience is a great book for kids to learn how to start practicing patience in every day life. Gabe is a wonderful character that readers can relate to and his shoes are relatable teachers. The practices are taught in situations that readers will understand and can help troubleshoot anxious behaviors. The illustrations are colorful and realistic. Loved the resources in the back of the book for parents and readers to further their practice in patience.

Absolutely loved this. I read this with my 5 year old and it does such a great job with giving examples about being patient. The story was easy for her to follow along and it kept her engaged. Loved this and we will be reverting back to this when patience becomes an problem (which it still does as adults!)

Thanks Netgalley and Boys Town Press for this great read.. especially since I was able to share it with my daughter.

Patience is a difficult concept to teach and incorporate into counseling. I myself am definitely not a patient person. Recently I saw a tiktok where a woman described a conversation between a father and his child in line at the grocery store. The child was impatient and the Dad told her that they had only been in line for 5 min. When the kid said that was a loooong time, he asked what she would think if she only had 5 min to play at the park. She knew that wouldn’t be enough time and Dad used this to talk about perspective. “Time flies when you are having fun…” He then engaged her in a word game to help the time pass.

I thought of that video when I began reading “Practicing Patience” by Jennifer Law. In this sweet picture book, Gabe is having difficulty waiting his turn. He is excited and ready to take on life. Lines, turns, and transitions are hard for Gabe to manage. As an engaging comical twist, Gabe’s shoes begin talking to him and help him develop skills to help him develop skills that allow him to wait patiently. Like so many books available through Boys Town Press, Practicing Patience has bright, engaging illustrations and solution focused affirmations. I haven’t had the opportunity to utilize this gem of a book in my clinical practice as it has just been released TODAY but absolutely intend to add it to my bookshelf rotation. Developing self control, harnessing impulsivity, and practicing patience are skills that are often goals identified by parents when they bring their young kids to counseling. Law, a school counselor, certainly understands how important these skills are in order for students to be successful within the school milieu. After meeting sweet Gabe, I can’t wait to read Jennifer Law’s other book “Pause Power.”

I LOVED this book. It gave real, concrete examples of times kids get impatient and positive things they can do to practice patience. It is going to be a staple on my bookshelf I can already tell.

Practicing patience is never an easy task. Even as adults we have a hard time being patient. We try to urge the line to go faster, or the cashier to work faster, or the car in front of us to go faster. And yet, we expect children who are just learning what the word patient means to be so.

"Practicing Patience" is a great book to teach children why being patient is important, and a great reminder to adults as well. With fun talking shoes, Lefty and Lacy, Gabe learns through trial and error how his impatience impacts others and himself negatively.

If your little one is having a hard time waiting for that dessert, in line for that ride, or the next day they get to see their best friend, then this is a great book to help teach them how to be patient.

I work in the mental health field and could use this book as a resource for parents and teachers with children who are struggling with patience. This book could also be used with children struggling with ADHD. #PracticingPatience #NetGalley

Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a very well written and creative way to teach kids on why it's important to have patience and what they can do while waiting. A definite buy for my impatient toddler!

Patience is hard. No one like to wait. What happens when our head knows how to wait and our body does not

A story about a little boy that struggled with waiting. His struggle disrupted his learning and coping. If you have a child that struggles with waiting, they will connect to this story and see themselves. Coming along side these struggles are more helpful than making one feel bad about their struggles. Your child will see what it looks like and how it disrupts but more importantly, they will see how they can cope without feeling shame. It is a way of thinking and practicing and having adults help you.

Parents and children will benefit from this valuable resource.

A special thank you to Boys Town Press and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest revie

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Practicing patience is a great book for young children who find it hard to sit still or wait. This book is a fun, resourceful story to help them learn patience from a young age and has cute illustrations to accompany the story. I loved the names of the talking shoes too.
At the back of the book is information and guidance for parents and guardians for added support to help them too.

This was a cute way to engage kids on the topic of patience. I work with kids with behavioral, developmental, and mental health diagnoses with ADHD being a prevalent diagnosis. I have added this book to my parent resources as a way for parents to continue our therapy work on practicing patience. Cute photos and I appreciate the note to parents and educators at the end. I would recommend this book.

Gabe has a hard time waiting and remaining calm. His patience runs thin quickly and he just wants to get on with things. This book highlights his feelings and reactions when he is postponed.
A very curious and magical phenomena occurs that helps him rectify and reign in his emotions when he is forced to wait. His shoes, Lefty and Lacey, unveil themselves and start giving him advice as how he can become a conquerer. They guide and direct him by suggesting that he relax his body, focus and become more attentive, stay calm and practice the power of positive thinking.
The illustrations greatly enrich the text and are full of expression and are very kid-friendly. I like the diversity of the characters and how responsive Gabe is as he processes his behaviour and then follows the directions that his shoes impart to him. The author includes "Tips for Parents and Educators" at the end which will be very helpful to the adults. I highly recommend this book.

Patience is not something that comes easily to children, or even some adults, and this book is a great tool for teaching patience. I initially was looking forward to reading this with my son who struggles with patience. However, he is just a little too young, he's 4, for this book and the situations that occurred. This was perfect for my 6 year old daughter though. She has more patience, but at times, when problems occur the tools from this book are handy. Learning to self-regulate is important for anyone at any age but learning it young is key. This book was great at giving children examples of the benefits of being patient and explaining great reasons why we should be patient. It had fun examples and great illustrations and the use of the shoes was a fun concept. The book itself was somewhat long winded and meant for maybe children 7/8 years old but I think this would be a great addition to school age children's libraries.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.

Gabe has to wait for everything!!! Lines, playing fun games, and even doing math. His shoelaces begin to show him ideas on how to be patient. This would be a great first week read aloud book for the classroom. Also, this would be a good bedtime book or one that could be read when your child is having a hard time at school.

I received an eARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Practicing patience is a life long journey and this little book is so important and helpful in encouraging patience in children from a young age. Fantastic illustrations accompany the story and add a fun element to the task of learning about how to be a more patient, helpful person.

There are also helpful notes in the back for guardians to read and implement when assisting children in learning the art of being patient.
