The Red Boat Fish Sauce cookbook is a wonderful mix of food, family history and the best of American cultural diversity. The history of Cuong Pham's family leaving Vietnam and coming to America is heart wrenching and inspiring. The recipes are a great mix of traditional Vietnamese foods and original recipes for food like chicken wings. Also cool to learn about fish sauce and other south Asian ingredients - history and ways to use in cooking. Overall, a great book and highly recommend!

I love Red Boat Fish sauce. This is a great cookbook. I should have known that the majority of the recipes would been based from Viet Nam cooking... which isn't a problem I was just hoping to see more diverse recipes other than from Asian culture. But that's fine, the section on condiments more than makes up for that lack I found.

I bookmarked quit a few of these recipes to try. I wish there were photos with EVERY recipe. The photos that were there along with the text just wanted me to see more from the illustration side. I realize that would make it quite a lengthy book but I would love that. Just my two cents.

This is a lovely cookbook whether you're familiar with their fish sauce or not. I guarantee you'll want to go buy some bottles after reading about its history, how it's made, and how you can use it in all of these traditional recipes. There are lovely color photos of most of the dishes and they all have a wonderful history behind them. Many are from the author's mother. Some are all-day traditional affairs while others are for quick(ish) dinners. If you want to learn how to make traditional Vietnamese dishes or to just experiment with some tasty dishes, this will be a fun guide. There is no nutritional information provided. A few recipes use their other products like palm sugar. The recipes tend to use large text and a big, colorful retro design, so they can sometimes take up three pages. This isn't a book I'm likely to use much but I enjoyed reading it and learned a lot.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.

Colorfully oriented cookbook arranged around the Red Boat Fish Sauce with details about the history and recipes.

What did I like? Such a unique cookbook centered around a cooking sauce and recipes with a Vietnamese traditional style. Fish sauce has a unique blend to lend to certain dishes with a salty fish flavorful flair. The cookbook is colorful and dramatic in style but serves up some great looking recipes!

Would I recommend or buy? While I love fish sauce, I’m not currently using the above named condiment. I’m intrigued into trying it and see what the fuss is about and how it deserves its own cookbook. If you love the fish sauce then I imagine grabbing this cookbook just makes sense. Four stars! I definitely want to try it!

The Red Boat Fish Sauce Cookbook: Beloved Recipes from the Family Behind the Purest Fish Sauce by Cuong Pham, Tien Nguyen, and Diep Tran is such a good cookbook! Love the vibrant pictures. I have been buying Red Boat Fish Sauce for many years because I love the flavor. Why have I never added it to vinaigrette? The Fish Sauce Vinaigrette recipe was phenomenal – so tangy, salty, and sweet. Cannot wait to enjoy more of these family recipes.

This is a wonderfully retro cookbook, the author is full of love for his family and traditional cooking - which is totally understandable when you come from Vietnam and your food is so satisfying and umami rich and fresh and flavourful. The pictures and style is typical of old 70s movies, but actually still look like the Vietnam I visited a few years ago, though the whole style is really due to California, I'm sure. I could totally listen to some Dengue Fever hits as I cook from this volume. This book tells you how to use fish sauce, how to cook Vietnamese and is full of deliciousness, though don't expect desserts. The only thing I would say is that there is not enough photos, only about 1 for every 5 recipes. But you will get all the classics of Vietnam from the sugarcane shrimp to the imperial rolls, the bbq pork meatballs, pho and so much more, even some western dishes that could do with a fish sauce twist.

First, I absolutely loved learning the story behind a common ingredient in my pantry - I'd never thought of the love and care that probably went into creating and distributing such a classic ingredient. These family stories carried through the entire cookbook and I loved learning about the cultural or familial importance of certain recipes/dishes.

i'm excited to try out some of these recipes - most of them seem simple enough - and I'm excited to try this classic brand of fish sauce in some unique and different ways, and not just more traditional Asian-inspired recipes.
