This is a steamy, modern, retelling of the Hades and Persephone story. Persephone wants to get out of Olympus and start her life over, but her mother has other plans for her...namely a surprise engagement to Zeus. Instead, Persephone makes a bargain with Hades, who she'd always thought was just a myth, to escape the life her family has planned for her. What she doesn't expect is to fall for him.

If you're a die-hard Greek mythology fan this might be a little light for you, and there are certainly some liberties taken. It's fun, and certainly spicy, but could do with a little more actual plot I think. What works is that there is strong emphasis placed on the importance of consent, and Hades is a dark, brooding hottie for sure. It's got great themes of female empowerment and agency, and found family too.

Katee Robert is such an amazing erotic romance author. Neon Gods was a really great Persephone and Hades retelling. I will say there are almost too many erotic romance Persephone and Hades retellings. This was a nice one however.

Katee Robert is one of my favorite authors! I enjoy reading her books so much. This is such an immersive retelling of Mythology in such a modern setting. I loved reading this book so much and the characters are so fascinating. I would highly recommend these books to a mature romance reader who enjoys dark mythology retellings for sure.

Oh I LOVED this book!!!!! I cannot tell enough of my friends how much I loved this story. The take on Hades was perfect and I loved his adoration of Persephone.

This has been on my TBR for a long time. I’ve heard lots of good thing about it. While I did like it, I didn’t love it. I’m a fan of Greek mythology so I think I wanted more from this.

I was waiting for the plot to come and it never came. Can’t say the same for the characters 🤭

This story had a lot of spice. I wasn’t mad about it though. I think if you’re wanting something with a lot of heat then this is the one for you.

Katee Robert is the best, and this series may be my favorite of hers—and in general. This is hot, sweet, and such a fun cast of characters. Could only be better if we got MORE!

Neon Gods was a phenomenal erotic romance featuring a fun twist on Olympus and the Hades and Persephone myth.

Persephone Dimitriou wants to escape Olympus and start over in the mortal world but that all changes when her mother ambushes her with an engagement to Zeus. Out of options, Persephone flees across the River Styx into the arms of the devil. Hades has spent years waiting for his moment to enact revenge and Persephone's arrival has finally given him the means to do so. But Hades didn't anticipate how much he would come to need Persephone during their bargain and now he's ready to go to war with Olympus to keep her.

I loved Persephone's character right away, she's determined to take control of her own life and her refusal to be sold off to Zeus was excellent. The scene of her escape through Olympus to the River Styx was very well done. Persephone becomes more confident as the book goes on which was great to see. Hades was an incredible character and he only gets better as the book goes on. He comes across as this big, imposing figure when he's actually a complete softie inside. I enjoyed getting to see him open up more as the book went on.

The first scene between Persephone and Hades was great as the chemistry between them was amazing. The pair complement each other so well and I loved how perfect they were for each other. Their relationship turns physical pretty quickly and the scenes are incredibly hot. This is definitely not the book for you if you don't like explicit scenes as there are a lot of them and they're quite detailed. Both Hades and Persephone fall for each other quickly although they're both hesitant express their feelings to each other. I particularly enjoyed seeing Hades fall so hard and fast. The man goes from zero to burning down the world for her so quickly and I absolutely loved it. Overall I really enjoyed their romance and loved every scene of them together.

I really enjoyed the world building in this book and the author's take on Olympus. In this world, Olympus exists connected to the mortal world while also hidden from it. Olympus is run by a collective known as the Thirteen, each of whom are one of the gods. I liked the way the gods got their titles and the reincarnation aspect added an interesting element. The political intrigue and maneuvering in the book was great and I'm looking forward to seeing more of how everything works in future books in the series.

Overall Neon Gods was a fantastic read and I can't wait for the second book in the series, Electric Idol, to release next year.

I absolutely LOVED this book! It was everything I wanted in a romance, a good plot and plenty of heat and spice. I really enjoyed the chemistry between Hades and Persephone and the bad boy/good girl trope. Highly recommend this!

With erotica there is a wide variety of things out there. This was not for me. I am sure its target audience will love it, but unfortunately I did not finish, (pun intended)

As a fan of Greek mythology, I was beyond stoked to see Katee Robert's take, and WHEW did she deliver!!!! The entire world she has created is so interesting, exciting, and fresh for a whole world of mythology re-tellings!! The chemistry, banter, and STEAM was everything!!! Super pumped to for more stories in this world!

I absolutely adored this book! Finished in two days! It's quick, spicy and moves fast. A Hades and Persephone retelling but very much in a urban world. It is more of a high society dystopian with what seems to be a few powers. I would check trigger warnings since this is a dark erotica. There will be a series with multiple books from multiple character view points. I highly suggest if you need a quick spicy read.

This was truly a fantastic read. I love retellings of classic myths that give them new life and this book does so amazingly well. The pacing is great and the chemistry between the characters makes this a truly compelling read.

Really liked this retelling of Hades and Persephone. It was out of my comfort zone but I see the appeal. I wont be reading the other books though.

Katee Robert is a master of steamy romances. I was probably not the right audience for this book series, as being Greek myself I really struggled with the way some of the myth elements were portrayed, but I'm sure others will enjoy this series immensely.

My thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.

I admit, I got to 73% and DNF'd. It wasn't bad at all, but I was starting to enter a reading slump, and rather than force the rest of the book and color it with my less than happy book slump feelings, I decided to start the second one to catch up with what I missed in the last quarter of this one and ended up really liking the second book, somewhat more than this one. So the second one helped to boot me out of the slump I was starting to enter.

That takes nothing away from this book, I did like the MC H and h, and it was an interesting spin on the Persephone/Hades story, which I appreciated.

The writing isn't bad, the spicy scenes didn't offend me, though what one likes to read is different so it may or may not be your cup of tea.

So far I am enjoying the second book, so my DNF of this one was all due to my slump, nothing against the book. Recommended if you like your naughty scenes a tad more than closed door.

One small complaint though, EVERY character is bi, like while they are paring up male/female, they have all had past lovers of both genders. I guess I live under a rock, but what are the odds of that happening? Shouldn't some be just one or the other, or none at all? Having everyone be bi just seems like it's trying TOO hard to be PC.

Not a bad thing, just odd to me.

3, not bad I blame my book slump, stars.

This book was everything my geeky Greek god obsessed heart ever wanted. My god the steam coming off the page with these two! Katee Roberts truly made Hades the dark hero we all knew he could be, added in some kink, and just enough sweetness to make us swoon. This is definitely worth a re-read!

This was a unique Hades and Persephone retelling, which I really loved, but the characters were just people not actual gods. The romance built up well and felt genuine, but their physical relationship was a bit sudden for my taste. Lots of steamy sex scenes, which is a plus in my book.

I wanted to try Neon Gods because so many have raved about these books. Unfortunately this book didn’t work for me. This is definitely a me thing. As much as I want to love mythology based books. Well written, just not my niche!

Wow. That’s all I can say. This book took me by surprise in the best way. Retellings can be hit or miss. This book was most definitely a hit. In fact, I think this is my favorite Hades and Persephone retelling that I’ve read! This book drew me in from the very first page. It was hard to put it down and make myself go to sleep. All I wanted to do was keep reading!

I’m a huge fan of Greek mythology and retellings, so I knew this book was right up my alley. It’s always fun to see how each author interprets the original story and crafts a new one out of it. Katee Roberts did a great job. I love that this was a modern retelling yet she still kept Olympus as this magical, special place. In this story, Olympus is cut off from the rest of the world (our world). It’s basically in a magical bubble hidden away from those who don’t live there. In Olympus, the Thirteen rule the city, though Zeus considers himself the leader of the Thirteen. A fun twist the author created is that the Thirteen are positions; each Greek God or Goddess is considered a position that is filled after a predecessor dies or gives up their role. Most of the positions are legacy positions meaning they are passed down through bloodlines.

Our story starts with Persephone, a media darling and the second eldest daughter of Demeter, attending a party at her mother’s request. Unbeknownst to her, this party is an engagement party for Zeus and his bride-to-be. It’s not until Zeus and her mother ambush her that Persephone realizes her mother has made a deal with Zeus for Persephone’s hand in marriage. Put on the spot, Persephone has no choice but to accept Zeus’s proposal. Zeus has already been married 3 times; all 3 of his wives are dead. No one knows for sure, but they’re all fairly certain he killed them. Persephone has no plans of becoming number 4. Soon after the proposal, she runs. This decision is what leads her to Hades, a man she believed to be a myth.

The romance between Hades and Persephone was everything I wanted. Their chemistry–emotionally and physically–together was off the charts. I loved seeing their relationship progress. Watching them both lower their guards and be vulnerable with each other was heartwarming. Their relationship was so sweet.

If you’re a fan of Hades and Persephone retellings and a sweet yet steamy romance, then this book is perfect for you!

TW: stalking, violence/assault, voyeurism/exhibitionism, and mention of death of a loved one.

I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. I understand how it's a Persephone/Hades retelling but I'm pretty confused as to how the whole "thirteen" came to be. I was expecting for this to actually involve the Greek Gods but it's basically just people "roleplaying" as them. The romance was good enough with a good dose of spice but the character, plot, and story building were lacking. Worth a read for people simply looking for a H/P retelling but not worth it for those wanting the mythology as well.
