How Sweet It Is has to be one of the most fun romances that I've read all year. This opposites-attract romance was perfection from page 1. Drake and Kate feel so alive and their banter just jumps off the page. Drake, a horror writer who wants to start a new leaf in the romance genre, is hesitant about the big book launch that Kate is planning. Kate is the Queen of Happy Every Afters and a horror-themed party isn't going to stop her. Drake and Kate might be opposites but it was obvious they were meant for each other.

I could not have adored this book more, and it was absolutely the perfect book to read this month. I could practically feel the chill of the fall air and smell the woodsmoke as if I was actually in Wellsville, New York. The characters were absolutely delightful too, from Kate's can-do attitude to Drake's reputation as the Knight of Nightmares to the adorable shih tzu named Sasha, with a bark bigger than her stature. The supporting crew of characters were just fabulous too. Plus it made me laugh. Out loud.

There wasn't a dull moment in this book. Not one. From cringe-worthy (but extremely funny) first meetings to swoon-worthy intimate moments, and you know...tombs full of bats. I could not get enough.

We invited Dylan Newton to come hang out with the Three Friends Book Club and we had the best chat, she is just delightful! She told us about her writing process, how this book came about, and what’s coming up next. I’m excited to tell you that there will be more books in this series, yay!

Happy Halloween Eve #bookishfriends !!
I originally received #HowsweetItIs by @authordylannewton as an ARC
#supergrateful🙏 @grandcentralpub and @netgalley ! Thank you for my #gifted copy
If you havent had the pleasure of reading the cute as hell story with Kate Sweet an event planner and Drake Matthews a nightmare horror writer, it is the Halloween romance that everyone needs after a month of creepy spooky and scary books!

Five reasons to love 🎃🎆
🎃 They call this a forced proximity trope.. but I think the tension of the two having to work together is the star.
🎃 Comedy!! Kate is hysterical and the situations rival I Love Lucy with her over the top reactions
🎃 Drake may be a Horror writer but he has a soft romantic side shhh..we like that more. He's grumpy shes☀️
🎃 Halloween events and fall festivals in a small town are the best!!
🎃 Slow burn romance but once it gets there its 🌶

This is a fast read , and if you were like me overdoing the thriller, horror vibes it makes it a segue to a cozy autumn feel that I really hope Dylan makes her signature theme , and I really need stories for Drake's brothers and Kate's friend Imani.. I seriously need the tea !!!

Where I did love the characters of this story the slow burn was a little too slow. I did get that Drake did not show his feelings quickly, he is an introvert being forced into a huge event , but he needed to get out of his head while Kate was setting up his home . There was the beginning BAM....then shhhhhhh white noise then the last third of the book which was rushed to me. That being said I still cant wait for the author's next book because overall what she is creating is a town I hope we stay for awhile.

I decided to DNF How Sweet It Is at about 20%. I really wanted to love the story, but sadly I wasn't connecting with the characters or the storyline. I decided to put down How Sweet It Is for now and will try again at a later time.

This was cute. It was a slow burn and had minimal steam. It was a perfect October read, I did however, have a hard time with the pacing.

The title says it all for this book - It’s so darn sweet! I love the mix of the event planner and the horror book author. I love how he calls her the Queen of happily ever after which pairs perfectly with his nickname of the Knight of Nightmares! They make such a great team and omg did I mention there is the cutest puppy on the cover?

I was explaining this one to a friend the other day and this is a classic opposites attract romance with some fun new updates, a great setting and a spooky backdrop. What a perfect Fall read!

There is definitely chemistry between these two and it does not disappoint. I loved the sweet details of how they got together. Their first kiss what fabulous. I was all about these two as I read! You just can’t help but root for them to be together. I also liked that they referenced wanting to be professional and for the most part when they were together even though they definitely had feelings for each other they wanted to do their jobs and allow the other to be successful. I was super impressed.

Rom com train here I come - choo choo! I love how it’s set in typical small town, whimsical town folks and 2 main characters that are so different in personality. The first 50 pages I chuckled so hard. Especially during the first meeting of Drake and Kate. The way the author slowly tells the readers the background story of both characters fits the narrative of the story plot. My favorite scene in the book was when they both are locked in a crypt. It was spooky and heart warming at the same time. And Sasha! Who doesn’t love a furry sidekick.

“Even if you don’t think so, someone out there cares about you, and you need to give them the chance to tell you.”

Two of my favorite genres to read are romance and horror, so when I came across the synopsis for How Sweet It Is, I knew that I had to give it a read. The Queen of Happily Ever Afters falling for the King of Horror? I absolutely had to know how things played out!

What I Loved:
✨ Hilarious Meet Cute - I don’t want to spoil anything, but Drake and Kate have a true comedy of errors first meeting. It’s laugh out loud funny to say the least!

✨ Fall / October Vibes - A harvest festival, pumpkin cupcakes, crypt shenanigans and bat hilarity, are just a few of the fall gems sprinkled throughout this delightful tale.

✨ Family Dynamics - I adored the banter and overall relationship between Drake and his family! I would love to read books about Drake’s brothers!

What I Didn’t Love:
⚡️ Rushed Ending - A lot happens in a very short amount of time at the end of the book. It felt like a sprint to get everything wrapped up and just made the book's ending feel very hurried.

⚡️Level of Fandom - Drake has an almost boy band level of fandom following him around everywhere he goes. It was hard for me to believe that a writer would reach that level of mania.

⚡️Unexpected Intimacy - I fully expected this book to be a closed door romance, mainly because it took such a large chunk of the book to just get a simple kiss. An open door scene does occur late in the story, which I’d normally be fine with, but this one just felt very sudden and a bit forced due to the book's pacing and the set up of the book as a whole.

Overall, I enjoyed reading How Sweet It Is. I read this book back in July (around publication day), but fully regret not saving it until now because of the great seasonal content. While I didn’t love everything about this book, I’d definitely be inclined to pick up another book by Newton in the future!

This book was such a sweet surprise!
I'm a big romance fan and usually steer clear of anything to do with horror, but this was the perfect speed for someone like me.

We meet Kate Sweet, the meticulous event planner, who wants to do something new and splashy to win an event-planning award. Her best friend is the publicist for Horror novelist Drake Matthews and needs Kate to step in last-minute to save his upcoming book launch event. After a truly awkward first meeting (including some blood and a fainting spell), the two can't seem to stay away from each other. While Drake is secretly writing a romance novel and Kate is trying to avoid her parents' constant nudges to go into medicine, the two might just realize that they could be a perfect match.

When I picked this up, I didn't realize it would be the perfect Halloween-season read. Their connection just seemed very genuine and it was such a joy to watch it bloom. Getting to hear so many little details of what made them tick, question each other, and eventually put aside their own worries to come together was just what I was hoping for. I can't wait to read Imani and Zander's story next!

By far one of the best books I’ve read this year! I loved that the main character was an author and the other was an event planner. Two really fun jobs to read about! My other favorite thing about this book was the fall/Halloween time! From the fall festival, rainy cold weather, and the main event being on Halloween was just perfect! I laughed so many times during the book and said “awh” a lot! This is the most perfect romcom I have ever read!! Highly recommend.

3.5 stars

This opposites attract romance started out pretty strong for me. I liked Kate instantly, who is dealing with her mother over her career choice. It has a good plot with her being the event planner who has to help out a horror writer, Drake Matthews, with the launch of his newest book. I liked Drake, too. I just don't know if there was enough chemistry between them. It's super slow burn, too. (Of course, when there finally was steam, I was listening to this in the grocery store!)

The secondary characters were all good--Drake's mother and brothers and Kate's best friend, Imani. I hope that she gets her own book. I also loved the romance and horror aspect coming together, too.

Thank you to NetGalley and Forever Publishing for an advanced electronic copy and a gifted copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This was the perfect book for Fall! I loved this story by @authordylannewton which takes place in October, and features Kate, an energetic events planner with her sights set on winning an award and Drake, a brooding, horror novelist with an upcoming book launch event slotted for Halloween. The hilarious first meeting between Kate & Drake, and the subsequent sparks that fly at every meet up thereafter will have you turning pages quickly to find out if they will get a happily ever after, or if it will all end on Halloween. I can't recommend this one enough - it was exactly what I needed and really hit the spot!

This is such an adorable story! I loved the pairing of a romantic event planner with a horror writer, and Kate and Drake are the perfect pairing. I found the story to be a lot of fun and sweet. There are some seriously hilarious moments, and some that really made me emotional in a good way.

I'm really impressed with Dylan Newton and her debut novel How Sweet It Is. Not only that, I was seriously charmed by Draker's brothers Ryker and Zander. I would absolutely love to see them with their own books. Especially Zander with Imani, Kate's best friend. Regardless I am really excited for more great things from Dylan Newton!

I think I was expecting something different from this book and it wasn't Halloween-y enough, there wasn't enough conflict, and the slow burn wasn't really a burn but a blah. There were a lot of rom-com hijinks and I can see this as a fun movie, but I was skimming by the end because I wanted to be done with said hijinks. (Maybe just a bad mood match?)
This sounds like a complete pan, but I can think of a lot of people who will love this book. It's just not me. I needed... more.

I loved the premise of this book, but there were too many subplots that made the book feel clunky. It was a good read but nothing made me want to reread it anytime soon.

I started this - I read about 30% - and I really had no desire to read more. Kate (the Queen of Happily Ever Afters) is an event planner tasked with planning Drake’s (the Knight of Nightmares) book launch. However, I came back to it a couple of weeks later, and I finished it. This was fine, but it wasn’t a “I can’t put this down” type of book. I think I might have liked it more if I read it in October? It definitely has a Halloween/fall-vibe.

Thanks to @NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for my ARC!
