I’m not sure why it took me so long to read this one!

What an enjoyable, quick, creepy story!

This one was perfect for around Halloween time. I nice little scary story. I really enjoyed the actual plot to the story as well. Jessica trying to figure out what happened and why kids were haunting 5B was interesting to follow along to.

The elements of horror were great too! I pictured this story as a movie and would definitely watch should it turn into one.

Definitely recommend this read

First of all, let me just thank the author for making me scared of the horrors in the book instead of my approaching final exam😅👍
I really loved the book, it was so engaging and hooking, and I absolutely felt amidst the action throughout it.
.
The writing style was spectacular, it just described everything so vividly that I was creeped out for most of the book.
.
The whole time I was reading, I kept imagining if this story was made into a film, then I would shudder and keep reading.
.
Jessica was the perfect character for the plot, I honestly thought her going back and forth with helping 5b was justified, the girl literally was seeing dead people.
.
The ending was a little bit, or actually so, anticlimactic, I didn't get a closure, I didn't want a happy ending or a hope filled one, but at least to know what happened for everyone.
.
Would definitely keep an eye for the author's new work.

This book was very enjoyable. The author successfully built a ‘there’s something not right here’ narrative and although the ending was somewhat predictable, it was no less enjoyable a story because of that. I felt somewhat unsettled from very early on and this continued til the very end. I particularly enjoyed the sections which gave a little information about the history of the asylum and would love to see this explored further. There isn’t a huge amount of character development or back story given, though it’s hinted at throughout, but I found I didn’t mind that as the story kept me engaged. This is novella length, so it’s to be expected that there’s not so much detail in it. Overall, this was an enjoyable read and I’d recommend it to others who enjoy unsettling horror.

Thou this felt like a slow burn, I couldn't help but keep wanting more and couldn't put it down. There has always a creepy to old asylums and this book did not disappoint. The story progressives gradually at times feeling slow but becomes more perplexing and terrifying as you read. Consisting trying to figure out just who is good and who is bad will have you holding onto your set!

Jessica has come to Redwood to forget her past. She has gotten a new job at an asylum as a Nurse. The Redwood Asylum has quite the history, being 200 years old. After she arrives, things quickly start to go sour. She realizes that the Asylum has secrets of its own. Especially with the patients, some of whom are former employees of the Asylum. Jessica becomes embroiled in the mystery of the resident of 5B. She is immediately drawn to him and he seems to know her, drawing her pictures and insisting she take them with her. When ghosts of young children start to visit her at home, she realizes there is a connection between the drawings and the unsolved mysteries of children gone missing.

This book was creepy, atmospheric, scary and all the things you want in a horror book. There are twists and turns all throughout. I loved it!

All families have secrets and some lock up their insane family members here and never look back. When Jennifer accepts a job here hoping to also disappear and start a brand new life for herself, she did not question the Asylum or their practices until it was too late.

It wasn’t anything special but it was a good read. I would recommend it to people just dipping their feet into the horror / paranormal genre. With these types of stories / books I really would rather have a fast-paced type of plot. The Redwood Asylum was more of a slow burn that built a lot of anticipation but just didn’t finish strong for me. It wasn’t really riveting or exciting but did the job it should have done.

The pace was relatively quick, and it was a fast read. I was never bored, but neither was I "scared". The atmosphere was creepy, and some of the ghosts a little gross, but It seemed to be missing the actual fear factor (for me anyway).

Overall, it was a good haunted asylum story

Ah whats better than a haunted asylum? Nothing. And this book is proof of that. Delightfully spooky, this is the first book bu L.A. Detwiler that I have read and I absolutely loved it. Before I finished it, I had already bought more of her stuff.

This book was just so-so for me. I felt like it could have been so much more. I was a little disappointed after all the hype surrounding the book.

The Redwood Asylum is a paranormal thriller by the same author of A Tortured Soul. The novel follows Jessica, a twenty-six year old nurse, who finds herself at her new job at Redwood Asylum. After leaving from her previous life due to horrible circumstances she needs to start over, Redwood doesn't do an in-depth background check and hires her.

Her first day she is assigned to be the nurse on floor 5, well known for it's violent patients. When the unstable man in 5B latches onto her warning her, Jessica feels drawn to help him and the ghosts running around the halls of Redwood.

But there is more going on than just the ghosts that haunt the rooms.

I found this novel to be an easy read. This was a classic paranormal novel, focusing on the ghosts and unsolved mystery to finally give peace. However, I did enjoy the twist leading to the ending. There were clues throughout the novel that allowed the reader to figure out the mystery before the 'surprise' ending.

I found Jessica as a character was undeveloped. I knew she had a dark secret from her past but she was hard to connect to because we as the reader didn't know a lot about her otherwise.

I gave this novel a ⭐⭐⭐⭐ review. Overall, I really enjoyed this novel. I found it to be a light read with an interesting concept. While I didn't connect to the main character, I enjoyed the writing and story.

I love asylum horror, so I was eager to dive into this book. I wasn't disappointed. This book is filled with thrills and scares as it navigates a young nurse taking a position at the ominous Redwood Asylum. We quickly get the feeling that not everything is as it seems. There's a man in 5B who claims to see ghosts, and our friendly nurse has a dark secret of her own. While it was a bit of a slow burn, there was enough tension to keep me turning the pages. The ending had a great twist I didn't see coming!

This book had one of my favorite settings in horror, an isolated Asylum. This particular Asylum had been opened for 200 years and nobody questioned what happened behind walls as long as they could keep the loved ones they now find embarrassing behind walls.

All families have secrets and some lock up their insane family members here and never look back. When Jennifer accepts a job here hoping to also disappear and start a brand new life for herself, she did not question the Asylum or their practices until it was too late.

Soon Jessica gets too close to the patients and their stories and nothing is what it seems in a place where ghosts roam freely and there is always someone watching in the shadows.

Even though the narrative did not bring anything fresh or new to these types of stories I still enjoyed it as well as the writing.

However I found it odd that we never really got to see any of the practices, the real doctors, nobody visits any of the patients etc This made it slightly less believable and I feel like seeing the illegal practices in the patients might have added more intensity to the horror.

i almost loved this book. I loved the concept and story and all the many twists and turns. I think I wanted more out of the book and i also wanted it shorter if that makes any sense. I think maybe MORE of the insane aspect would have made it better?

This was a quick, fun, and creepy story. Though in my opinion it wasn't scary. Even though it wasn't just about that. The storyline was interesting and the creepy vibes it gave.

The Redwood Asylum is a fun take on the paranormal thriller. The setting is creepy AF and the author does a great job weaving in the paranormal with the very scary real life evil going on.

Jessica arrives at Redwood to escape demons of her own past. But she quickly finds herself engrossed in the life and past of patient 5B which draws her into the deep web of Redwood's decades of secrets.

There were times when the book felt a bit long and repetitive, but overall it grasps you quickly and doesn't let go to the end. The second half especially is action-packed. I am excited to see that there is a sequel planned from the narrator's POV and will definitely read it.

If you're a fan of creepy ghost stories, this is a fun one to add to your TBR!

Thank you to Netgalley for the gifted e-copy.

This was a good old fashioned horror at an asylum book. Predictable of course, but I did enjoy the different stories that were woven within the main plot. I wasn’t on the edge of my seat but it did hold my interest throughout.

I’m a sucker for learning more about characters and their histories so I enjoyed reading about the stories of other patients, staff and eventually the FMC, Jessica. There wasn’t any emotional connection to her, I feel like we did see to start her spiral with her thought processes but with everything happening, it was an eventual conclusion. I felt it was a superficial story, more about stories within a story rather than us connecting with characters. For this type of book it wasn’t an issue at all.

Advertised at the end of the book is a small novella featuring the Redwood Asylum and there is one saying that the author plans fo release a prequel. I would definitely be interested in knowing more about the history and stories of this asylum so I plan on checking those out.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy of the book to review. This review is my own opinion.

One of the best things about this community is learning that the authors whose work you like to read are actually nice, interesting people, and that is what I have found in L.A. Detwiler. Plus she writes sentences that begin like this: "It all mixed together into a milkshake of dread..." so how can I not love her?

This is my third Detwiler novel and honestly it was my favorite. The setting for The Redwood Asylum is a creepy gothic mansion in the woods that houses the insane--or at least those that are supposed to be insane. Mix in some ghosts, a nurse with a dubious past and a mysterious mental patient and you have one heck of a spooky tale. There were a few times when the writing seemed a little weaker than in other parts, but overall I enjoyed the story a lot, got a sufficient amount of creeps and thought about it when I wasn't actively reading so I would say that was a win. And the main character's name was Jessica, so you know, what more could you ask for?

A fantastically creepy book. This book is well written and a quick read. The plot is interesting and captivating. Chapters are short and told mostly from one point of view. I love book about ghostly stuff and this was quickly a favorite. It’s steeped in mystery and with a little twist at the end that you don’t see coming. Definitely recommend!
