While vacationing to escape a bad end to her marriage, Sarah had no intention of falling in love. When Alex woos her and invites her to his home so they can learn more about each other, Sarah goes with a willing heart. Almost as soon as they arrive, Sarah finds herself in the middle of a bad dream. Alex's wife is missing. She disappeared, not the story Alex told her, but she has to trust him, right?
While not an original story line, Louise Douglas has done a fair job of building the mystery surrounding Sarah's investigation into the truth of Alex's story. There's enough questions with twists to keep this reader guessing until the end. An great blend of romance and mystery.

The Secrets Between Us explores what happens when two people fall in love after terrible things in the past only to question everything they thought they knew about the other person. Who can you trust? Where can you turn to find out the truth? A real page turner!

While on holiday, Sarah becomes close with Alex and his young son, Jamie. Sarah has escaped her cheating husband and Alex's wife is gone, so when he suggests coming to his home and becoming Jamie's nanny, she accepts. But it doesn't take much time in his village to realize that his wife Genevieve disappeared without a trace and gossip says Alex knows more than he let's on. Sarah has fallen in love with him, but to truly trust him, she needs to know the truth.
This book has a lot of similarities to Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca though it's set in modern times and didn't have that haunting Gothic feel, There was a creepy vibe underlying the story however that kept me on edge.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Sarah is trying to redeem herself and gather what is left of her life. She meets Alexander by chance. He whisks her away with the promise of a new life. She will help care for Alex's son, Jaime, and care for the house while he is working. The only problem.......Alex's wife is missing. Everyone in town knows Genevieve and is at a loss by her absence. So many secrets are being kept. How can Sarah compete with this missing woman? Alex promises Sarah Genevieve just up and left him and Jaime. But what if something more sinister happened?!
I love the premise of The Secret Between Us by Louise Douglas. At times, I found myself glazing over the chapters, skipping pages here and there, I was intrigued and very curious at the beginning. the middle of the book dragged and the ending was the perfect ending.
Special thanks to NetGalley, Louise Douglas, and BoldWood Books for the advanced digital copy in exchange for my honest opinion. 3.5 stars

The Secrets Between Us is an okay read. This Louise Douglas book will definitely appeal to some. It just isn't for me.

It's a tale of love, secrets, and mystery. It's a tale of not knowing what's going on and wondering if the man you love is guilty of something sinister.

It's not bad. The writing style is just way too descriptive and slow for me.

I was completely mesmerized by this book. It was a lengthy read but so worth it. Was a page turner that kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Wasn’t expecting it to be a mysterious and dark thriller.

This was my first novel from this author. The Secrets Between Us started out a little slow but quickly picked up as a suspenseful, edge of your seat, thriller with an ending that I certainly did not see coming!!

The setting was gorgeous and the characters were well developed. Thrillers and mystery are not typically my go-to genres but this one was perfect!

Thank you to Netgally and the publisher for this e-arc.

A suspenseful story that is hard to put down, this novel also has multilayered characters and a believably flawed protagonist. The deft writing accelerates the action all the way to the explosive ending chapters.

Sarah travels to Sicily with her sister and brother-in-law in an attempt to recover from the recent twin shocks in her life: the stillbirth of her son and the infidelity of her long-term lover. At their hotel, she meets single father Alexander and his young son Jamie, both lonely and bereft after the loss of Jamie's mother, Genevieve. Sarah is strongly drawn to both father and son and ends up agreeing to move into their home in Somerset as Jamie's caregiver and Alexander's housekeeper. She and Alex embark on a relationship but Sarah soon finds that the situation is more complicated than she had realized. Did Genevieve run off with her lover as Alexander maintains? Or do Sarah's mounting suspicions and uneasy dreams indicate a more sinister reason for her predecessor's disappearance, as Genevieve's mother believes?

Psychological suspense, romance, and complex family relationships make this story an exciting and absorbing read.

With vibes of Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier The Secrets Between Us is a Gothic mystery filled with atmospheric doom and a romance for the ages. The author brilliantly disguises the characters' motivations, so that the true causes of things remain a mystery until about two-thirds into the novel when the main crisis unfolds. We then realize that the heroine, who sees things through the lens of her own feelings of inferiority completely misses the truth, which is to her a shock and relief at the same time.

I loved the descriptions of the various settings and the character development...and in this book the estate Avalon is both. Descriptions of the plants and the grounds and the woods and the animals were so detailed and beautifully done yet they weren't distracting from the story. I had lovely images of the Somerset dancing in my head.

If you love creepy mysteries I highly recommend this book!

This storyline started off slow for me and never quite picked up, however please do not discount it because it has some very valid points within the plot. Sarah lost her child and her partner turned to another woman blaming Sarah. Everyone wanted Sarah to take counseling and be on a higher dose of antidepressants when she decided to leave him for his one to many times of indiscretions.
Sarah met Alexander and his little boy on holiday and there is a mystery surrounding the disappearance of his wife.

The mysterious intrigue only heats up and Sarah finds herself in the middle and her own personal psyche is being called into question.
The author does a good job with a multitude of characters, but it seems disassociated at times and not cohesive that it takes giant strides to get a point ,but you have it already figured it out way back and it just seems like wasted dialogue, but then there are areas that could be added to because they need some more clarification.
I do definitely think others will like this type of book. Even though it should be edited a little bit better it doesn’t take that much from the overall jest of the storyline.

I received a free advanced copy from NetGalley and these are my willingly given thoughts and opinions.

This story was a page turner for sure, and it kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end.

Needing a break from her failing relationship, Sarah joins her sister and brother-in-law on holiday in Sicily. While spending the day at the hotel pool, she stumbles upon Alexander and his son and quickly becomes enamored with the two. She knows next to nothing about this handsome stranger, yet when he asks her to come to his home and be a housekeeper and nanny for Jamie, she is quick to accept the opportunity for a new life.

But with Alexander’s wife, Genevieve, only recently out of the picture, her memory is still fresh within the home. No one knows where she is, but soon Sarah feels as if there is a presence among the estate and her concern over Genevieve’s whereabouts and what made her leave her perfect life becomes a borderline obsession.

To say I was caught off guard by the ending is an understatement, and I couldn’t believe I didn’t see it coming. There were minor clues throughout the story that I didn’t pick up on and I wouldn’t be surprised if other readers don’t catch them either. All I have to say is well done, Louise Douglas!

Highly recommend this book, and I look forward to reading more from this author!

I have to apologize to my family for ignoring them while I finished this book. I HAD to know what happened to Genevieve! I was hooked from the beginning. Despite the book being a bit long (too long, in my opinion), it was actually a quick read.

I waffled between two guesses on the twist at the end, but truly did not see it coming until I was a little further along in the book.

This book is a lovely distraction and I’m eager to check out some other Louise Douglas novels.

Sicily seems like the ideal place to recover from a broken heart and Sarah is hoping a change of scenery will help her heal. She meets Alex there, a man recovering from the breakdown of his own marriage, and the two are drawn together. Their whirlwind courtship ends with Sarah joining Alex in his small Somerset village. There she finds out more about Alex’s disappeared wife Genevieve, a woman seemingly beloved by all her knew her, a loving mother to son Jamie. It seems more and more implausible that Genevieve would just walk away from her life and her child. The missing woman’s family believes Alex is involved in Genevieve’s disappearance, but wouldn’t that mean that Sarah was in danger too? Already too far in love with Alex, Sarah finds it hard to believe he could hurt anyone. But is she willing to risk her life on it?

I really enjoyed this romance come thriller. If I have a criticism it is that it is just a tad too long. However it certainly is an enjoyable read with a nice central character that you feel for.
The ending had a very satisfying twist!
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. Its a "feminine" read as such but a truly worthwhile one
