I haven’t read a choose your own adventure book in a long time and I was so excited to read this book!

Four friends (Amelia, Chase, Cleo and Logan) take a road trip due to Amelia inheriting a tarot deck from her grandmother. The story is told from the POVs of Amelia and Chase, and you get to make the decisions for them. Along with uncovering the mystery of the tarot deck, there are also different romantic endings.

At the end of the book, you tally up your answers and discover the meaning of them. Overall, I had so much fun reading this book and I would totally recommend it - especially if you have bookish friends so you can compare answers!

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Major Detours by Zachary Sergi is an innovative, new YA novel on the Choose Your Own Adventures books from the 1980's. I used to be fascinated with this genre of books and how we could make decisions for characters and follow them to see the effects of our choices. It's been a while since I've read a book like this, but it instantly brought back pleasant memories. I had so much fun reading this book! I wish more books were made this way. I found it to a wonderfully fun and entertaining experience.

The story revolves around 4 friends: Amelia, Chase, Cleo, and Logan, who are going on a tarot-inspired road trip that turns into a scavenger hunt of sorts. According to the description, there are four possible endings to this book, which is super exciting.. As I was reading this book, I enjoyed being able to control the decisions of the characters and deciding which path I wanted them to take. Often, books will take you the path that the author determines; here, the reader is given some control, and I really enjoyed having that power.

Here is an excerpt from Chapter 1 when Amelia explains the impetus for their journey:

"The next two weeks stretch ahead of us like a highway, the last two weeks before we all head off in different directions. The best two weeks of our lives, we promised. I can already feel how good it’s going to be now, just two hours in, with junk food in my gut and a sugar rush buzzing in my veins. With my eyes set on the vivid blue sky and the dry green brush, on the puffed white clouds slung above the red hills.
Blue and green, white and red. The colors of the tarot. Or at least the colors of this tarot, our most prized possession. I really shouldn’t be holding it with my fast-food fingers, but I want to keep it close. This tarot deck, well-worn and beloved, was the inspiration for our road trip. It contains multitudes: histories and memories, mysticism and mysteries—the exact kind we hope to solve on this trip."

After I read that excerpt, I knew I was in for a wild adventure with hints of mystery and mysticism. I couldn't wait to keep reading. I ended up finishing this book in a day. I just couldn't put it down. Overall, Major Detours is a fun YA book that will appeal to fans of the Choose Your Own Adventures series. If you have fond memories of reading those books when you were a kid, or if you've always wanted to try them out but never got the chance, I highly recommend that you check out this book when it comes out in September! You won't regret giving this a try, inviting your friends to try it out, and comparing your journeys and endings!
