Lover Unveiled
#19 Black Dagger Brotherhood series
JR Ward
Book nineteen in the Warden’s BDB series continues her intriguing and inventive new direction for the brotherhood and the species and having just eliminated the Lessoning society brings back an old evil entity to Caldwell looking for love in all the wrong places and wreaking-havoc on humans, the brotherhood and the entire vampire race and brings back a once cursed brother thought long dead to help put the evil genie back in her bottle.

Mae lost her parents in the Lesser raids that decimated the race leaving only her and her brother, when he’s killed by an unknown attacker she’s bound and determined to do whatever it takes to bring him back to life. So she sets out to locate a book of spells that could potentially save him and ends up at an illegal human underground fight where she saves the life of the most handsome and fearsome Vampire male she’s ever seen. But she has no time for romance she’s on a mission.

The Brother Sahvage is supposed to be dead, and cursed as a Warlock even though he never had anything to do with magic, he did evade death and for the centuries since the brotherhood put dire, do not open, warnings on his coffin has been living on the fringes of the race and the Black Dagger Brotherhood looking for his cousin Raven the one with the real magic. He knew coming to Caldwell the new seat of the brotherhood was a bad idea and when a female vampire saves his life and ties him further to her plight to save her brother and his former Black Dagger Brothers his fate is sealed.

Every new edition of the BDB is amazing and just when you think it can’t get any better it does. The Warden is a magician and the new direction she’s taking the series on is ground-breakingly original in both the storyline and world-building and that was truly evident in this novel when she brings back from the dead a brother from way back when and an evil entity who needs to die and seems to be indestructible. Plus the audience gets catch ups on all the other brothers their shellans and the entire cast of characters from this innovative series. Let’s chat about the stars of this novel, Sahvage and Mae, there was a review that said Mae was unlikable but that is NOT true, she’s exceptional, maternal, compassionate and brilliantly flawed and then there’s Sahvage, the mysterious, cursed hard to kill brother who’s come back from the dead and their love story was emotional and fabulous. Cut to the evil doer, Devina who BDB fans are a bit familiar with but who was the main antagonist is JR’s Fallen Angel series and now comes to call to create chaos for the BDB, Lassiter and the species. Brilliant!
Fans of UF and of this incredible (should be read in order) series will find this unputdownable.

Narration:
Reading this series is fantastic but if you can swing it do get the series on Audible, the performance by Jim Frangione is remarkable. In this edition he perfectly nails every accent and attitude, every male and female portrayal and every snark or serious moment and his representation of Devina was amazing, he got every one of her over the top sociopathic, murderous affectations to a tea.
Bravo Jim!!

Diehard fans of J.R. Ward will absolutely love LOVER UNVEILED.

.R. Ward is back in Caldwell with the Brothers! I can’t believe that there are already nineteen books in this series. However, despite how much time has passed, the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward remains one of my top favorites.

This time, Ward has returned to a familiar title with the word “Lover” in it, which made me very excited. Since this is Sahvage’s book, I felt like there was a lot of mystery and anticipation behind it. But I’m glad to say that this book completely won me over within the first few pages.

There’s no doubt that Ward can write well. She proves it time and time again with her unique narration and dialogue. The characters jump out at you with their personalities that even the secondary characters feel unique.

Author JR Ward continues to amaze me with the world building and continuity in the Black Dagger Brotherhood, keeping it one of my all time favorite series.

Lover Unveiled introduces us to Sahvage, a strong and powerful male with a traumatic past he keeps hidden. He manages to keep a low profile and stick to himself until he meets Mae.

Mae is a female desperate to find the answer to her prayers. While looking, she finds herself at an underground MMA fight. And in Sahvage’s orbit. So it begins. However, their story isn’t the only thing going on in this book. I did enjoy their journey. But I didn’t love Mae. She could get quite annoying. Sahvage, though I did love and he is a great addition to the BDB.

As Ms. Ward is famous for, her books have so much going on that if you blink, you could miss something very important. We get to know Balthazar better. We also meet some new characters that are key to the development of this storyline and set up possible future storylines, as well.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the new evil that definitely gives the Omega and Lessening Society a run for their money, Devina. I loved hating her in the Fallen Angels series and she fits right in in Caldwell.

Lover Unveiled is filled with mystery, secrets, sarcastic wit, steam and love. Caldwell and the BDB are my favorite escape. A great addition to the series and I cannot wait for more!!!

Lover Unveiled is a return to the BDB world, including even going back to the "lover" title! Ward has gone away from this and I was unexpectedly thrilled to see the trend back. It seems like such a minor thing to be excited about, but I really was.

Sahvage is an MMA fighter, which is another bookish profession I love (so much to love already). Like all the BDB characters, he has a terrible backstory and is dealing with a lot, emotionally. One thing Ward does wonderfully is explore the characters and really flesh them out, even when it's painful to read. It isn't in a gratuitously gory way, which is why she is such a great writer. The heroine of this story, Mae, seemed to be a tragic loss to all the other stuff happening in his book. I felt that for was wonderfully developed as Sahvage was, she seemed lacking in that deep background. Their story has a sort of tragic feel from the beginning which is par for the course in the BDB world.

There is a LOT happening in Lover Unveiled. Multiple storylines sort of converge here, so it isn't JUST the story of Sahvage and Mae. Honestly, if you aren't fairly caught up in the world, you will find this book a tad overwhelming and confusing. However, if you are reading these as fast as Ms. Ward can release them (like me), Lover Unveiled will answer some lingering questions while providing you with the expected love story of another man of the brotherhood.

I admit I'm not into vampires like I was. I don't read as many books with them in them anymore. I do have a few authors that I keep up with and Ward is one of them. Okay, keep up is stretching it a little bit. I'm slightly off on reading them in order. My bad, it happens sometimes when reviewing.

So let's see, this week I went from a cover with fluffy dogs on it to this one. I'm so lucky!

This is a great cover and if you aren't into paranormal romance this cover might change your mind and have you trying it.

If you follow me then you know I love male-driven romance series. This series reminds me why I love them. One thing Ward does almost better than any other author is her male-driven stories. She does a wonderful job of showing you them for who they are, every facet of their lives. The good and sometimes, the bad.

I really loved Sahvage. He really spoke to me. He's a wonderful character. One that has no problem carrying the story. Which he does because I liked him better than Mae. It's not that I didn't like her because I did, just not as much. With her, I had moments where I would sigh and think, 'really'. Not that it changed how as a whole I felt about the story, I still enjoyed that.

In fact, this one was very easy to get into and read. Sometimes Wards stories can feel like they have gotten away from her with all that's going on but this one made me feel like I only read a hundred pages instead of the huge page count. I don't know about you but I love that in my books.

For those who love her books, you are in for a treat. I really think you'll enjoy this one. For those who might want to try her and grab this one I think you'll be able to read it no problem and keep up. I do think that when you fall in love with this one you'll want to go back and then I think you should read the series in order.

I'm so glad that I was invited to review this story. It took me away from my every day and swept me away on an adventure.

This one is great. This brings the "old school BDB" feelings back to me. It's clever, it's flawless, it hooks you from the start and does not let go.

I love everything JR Ward did with the series in this book. Things have shifted, and I love the direction of the series at this moment. The story is checking every box for me right now. I loved Sahvage so much. His need to protect, his sarcastic responses, and everything in between. He will be a new favorite for me from now on.

I laughed, I cried, I sat on the edge of my seat. She had me from moment one, and all the way through. I have not closed a BDB book and felt this need to read it again right away in a while. I MISSED this feeling. I needed this book more than I knew I did. Bravo! I'm so ready for the next book from this "world."

4.5 stars--LOVER UNVEILED is the nineteenth instalment in JR Ward’s contemporary, adult BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD paranormal, vampire, romance series focusing on the elite group of vampire warriors known as the Black Dagger Brotherhood. This is Sahvage, and Mae’s story line. LOVER UNVEILED can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from numerous third person perspectives following several intersecting pathways LOVER UNVEILED follows Sahvage, a forsaken and ostracized member of the vampire race in the aftermath of another near fatal attempt on his life but for the female savior who reluctantly aids our story line hero. Mae is a female vampire who is desperate to locate a long lost artefact but in doing so reveals an ancient evil, who they themselves, is determined to possess that which does not belong. Having saved our story line hero, Mae is now connected by blood to the man who would one day claim her as his mate.

Sahvage has been abandoned by the vampire race, lost to the ravages of betrayal and power. Believed to have committed atrocities against his own kind, and long since dead and buried for his sins, Sahvage is neither dead nor buried, and is determined to stop the female that calls to his in her search for the secret of ever lasting life.

Meanwhile, several other story line arcs begin to take shape in the aftermath of the crash of a meteorite in Caldwell, New York:

The demon Devina, whom we met in previous story lines, has returned with a vengeance pulling in both the BDB and the Band of B*stards in her search for the ultimate book of power and magic. As the number of murder victims increase in the city of Caldwell, Devina is one-step closer to locating the book and all of its’ secrets.

Balthazar ‘Balz’, son of Hanst, and a member of the Band of B*astards finds himself in a precarious situation when his latest robbery comes with a bonus tag along. Believing himself possessed, Balz begins to pull away from the only family he has ever known, and into the direct line of fire by the local police.

Nate, adopted son of Muhrder and Sarah, finds Elyn, a young female vampire who claims to be lost and without family or support. Taking her to the BDB run Luchus House for troubled and recovering vampires, Nate struggles with issues back home but refuses to reveal the source of his pain.

LOVER UNVEILED is a story of betrayal and vengeance; power and control; desperation, secrets, grief and love. JR Ward pulls the reader into the familiarity of the BDB family, their unwavering support, and need to protect the Brothers they love. Not all of the Brothers make a cameo appearance but for one fallen angel, his future is about to unfold. The premise is haunting, complex and detailed; the characters are edgy, spirited, tragic and strong.

Put on your seatbelts because Lover Unveiled is a wild ride. JR Ward is at her best in this 19th book in the original series. There is a lot going on with new characters to love and a plot that careens all over the place and then comes together nicely with Ward’s magical storytelling skills. I enjoyed just about everything.

It’s hard to talk about Lover Unveiled without giving spoilers, so apologies for any vagueness.

WHAT REALLY WORKED:

• The story truly reenergized the series.
• Sahvage: Great character development. There’s familiarity about him even though Lover Unveiled is the first time we even hear about him; he captured my attention right away. It was almost as if the series had been missing him all along.
• Mae: I loved everything about her. For me, she’s the heroine I’ve been waiting for. One, she’s a vampire. Two, she’s just an everyday sort of female whose loneliness has devastated her. She and Sahvage are perfectly suited in a way the others haven’t been, at least for me.
• The introduction of new characters: There are a few new characters who Ward wove seamlessly into the story. Again, each of them felt familiar and I’m already impatient to see where their stories go.
• Lassiter: he was one of my least favorite characters up until A Warm Heart in Winter. His role in the winter book and in Lover Unveiled have touched my heart and made me want to give him a huge hug!

WHAT I STRUGGLED WITH:

• I’ve only read the first two Fallen Angels books because one, the whole demon thing really creeped me out and two, JRW said it wasn’t necessary to read this series. Lover Unveiled felt more FA than BDB.
• Davina is such a contradiction and I think she’s a great character. But the things she does has me making the sign of the Cross over and over just like Butch.

Overall, I truly loved this book, even the moments I was freaked out. It’s fast paced and engaging with fantastic characters and a plot that’s brilliant. I hope we see more of Sahvage and Mae!

Thank you to Gallery Books for an early copy in exchange for honest feedback.

Ahhh! I was here for this latest chapter of the BDB. I loved going back into this world and this time things really intensify! I enjoyed the way the reader knows there is danger and has an idea of WHO but we can’t quite put our finger on the why. J.R. Ward is such a good storyteller and she keeps her readers engaged. There are several different storylines and we see glimpses into Sahvage’s life in the Old Country. The book they’re looking for is creepy and I couldn’t read this book fast enough. This new threat is very interesting and you shouldn’t miss this book!

Wow, this was extraordinary. There's so much jam-packed into the first 20% of the book, I felt like I was jumping into an all-new experience, but with a familiar atmosphere and neighborhood. From the introduction of Sahvage to the way Mae is portrayed, it feels joyfully uncomfortable and I like it. Honestly, the only thing I can say without spoiling anything is that it’s a stellar five-star read. I truly can not wait to see all that is to come for the future of the BDB series. Amazing.

How can you even begin to fathom becoming addicted to a series like this.

And it is an addiction. Ward creates these stories with extreme detail and wild imagination. Her characters range from demons you can freak out about and all the way to soft ethereal beings. And the Black Dagger Brothers, well, they are some of the kindest, sweetest, soft around the edges, very bad ass dangerous guys out there.

They are a stark combination of someone to fear on the outside but a beautiful soul inside. Finding their forever female in the chaotic world that they live in is an amazing process that Ward creates.

In this story, we are getting the inside scoop on Savhage. He is someone who has had a very traumatic past. He wears the trauma on his skin and on the outside. But when he meets the one he knows is right for him, things change.

Inside this man is a mess. Ward takes us through some of his painful past and experiences in order to feel and know what he is dealing with. The intricate detail and complexity of these characters that she’s developing is truly amazing.

There are a few different tangents to the story that come together in the end for a big climax. The story is in depth and perfect addition to the rest of the series. Savhage’s choice of a mate it’s not my favorite character. I found her annoying, overly headstrong, and not supportive enough of him. But that’s my personal opinion.

Overall, this story is addicting and powerful with more development into the complex world the Brotherhood lives in. Great story!
