This was a great companion to the book Mexican Gothic. It provided discussion questions which were great for our book club.

I really enjoy getting book club kits and this one was great. It included discussion questions, a playlist, notes from the author, facts about Gothic novels, and cut-out activities, These are a perfect fit for a book club meeting either virtually or in-person.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and author for this gift copy of the Mexican Gothic book club kit.

Loved, loved this one. I am saving up for the physical copy but I forgot to mention how much I genuinely loved it. It has EVERYTHING you want from a book.

Wow, this dark, creepy, creative tale certainly kept me interested till the very end! Mexican Gothic was an absolute page turner. Thank you NetGalley, the author and publisher for the review copy. All opinions are my own.

I belatedly realized that this is a book club kit and not the actual book, but I took a look at it anyway! The book is a hit or miss for readers, and I think it's a miss for me. I am a huge horror/suspense fan, but the plot of the book dragged on a bit and I wish there was more action. I think the book club kit could address some questions for existing horror fans and add some questions for people who are newer to the genre, so it creates discussion.

This gripped me from the beginning, but towards the end, I didn’t really understand what was going on with the magical elements. I did enjoy the unexpected romance though.

Ha, I didn't read this well when I requested it. I thought it was the book not the book club kit but that said it's a fun kit. I didn't read the talking points (I'll come back and revamp this review when I do) because I haven't read the book yet.

I did however read the historical info included which was great and I liked that there was some fun stuff like paper dolls. Actually that made me a little sad I had gotten this as a mobi file instead of a PDF since there isn't much you can do with that one your kindle. At least with a pdf I could have opened them on my lap top and had fun with them.

Moody, creepy, atmospheric, haunting. All of these words capture the feel of Mexican Gothic. It's truly a gothic story, with a disturbing and rundown manor, creepy family members, and a truly horrifying history and family secret. Add in a dash of romance and good supernatural elements, and Mexican Gothic becomes an incredible horror story.

I really loved this book. I still can't get over the ending and what was really happening in the house. It's totally crazy but it was also so well done. After reading this and Gods of Jade and Shadow last year, I can say I really enjoy Moreno-Garcia's style and storytelling. I'm really looking forward to reading more of her books, and thankfully a few are being republished next year. I highly recommend this book if you're looking for a good haunted house horror story.

I picked this book up after hearing so many rave reviews about it, but unfortunately this one was not for me.

I did not enjoy the storyline and thought it was a bit far fetched. (I mean I know it's not supposed to be realistic but it just seemed a bit too out there for me)

Also maybe because I picked it up at the start of the holiday season, I might have enjoyed it more around spooky season. I actually almost DNF'd it but I was about 75% of the way so I saw it through.

I think there was so much build up throughout the book and the ending seemed very rushed. Overall this just wasn't the book for me.

Thank you Netgally for the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review.

This is a really great modern gothic novel, it fulfills all of the gothic requirements and it's very spine-tingling and horrifying. It's creepy but brilliant.

I loved the in depth questions in this book club guide! I also LOVED the art and pictures of the fashion too! I thought that was such a nice touch! This is a must for any book club reading Mexican Gothic!

The book club questions were good, and I like that the author created a playlist for the book. The paper dolls were a little strange/unnecessary--isn't this for adults?

2.75 stars.
This wasn`t a big woohoo for me. I don`t know what i had hoped for, but it was perfectly okay. But the spooky and creepy was not what i liked.

This is not the type of book I normally read, but I really enjoyed it.
The book starts with Noemi, a rich socialite from Mexico City, who is sent by her father to check on Catalina, her cousin who married and moved away. They had received a troubling letter from her and the family wants to ensure her safety and wellbeing.
The rest of the story takes place in what at first glance appears to be a gloomy, old house in advanced state of disrepair. Catalina married Virgil Doyle, a man who comes from a old and reputable family, but who have lost everything. From the moment she arrived in her house, Noemi feels unsettled and at times scared. She starts to think that the house is haunted, but that the family is also hiding something about her cousin.
Noemi is determined to help her cousin and she does not leave when she should.
This book is dark, but very gripping and surprising. There are many twists and turns that kept me reading.
I really enjoyed the plot and the characters. The writing is evocative.

This was a pretty good companion to the actual book. I love the time the author dedicated into creating this. This will be very helpful for people that want the discuss the book further.

I didnt read the full description, and thought this was the actual book. It's not. It's a cute little companion book to go with the actual book. It's only 14 pages, and has some pretty neat things in it. I am sad it wasn't the actual book, but this was a neat find on its own.

Mexican Gothic Book Club Kit by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

When I saw this book club kit, I decided to read the book at the same time. I appreciated the extra time the author gave in providing the historical information about the Mexican mining towns and the infiltration of the Spaniards and the British. The discussion questions were good starting off points with a group. They make the reader go deeper into the book. The Spotify playlist was amazing. The music was haunting and made me feel the dark ambience of the High Place setting.

The image of the snake eating its tail was a little disturbing. I love traditional ouroboros images but this one was spooky or creepy – perfect for this book. Reading about gothic stories from the 1960s and 1970s made me smile. I love and have all Phyllis Whitney books and most Victoria Holt books. The premise of those books compares to this one – a girl in an isolated place that needs rescuing. I absolutely love the paper dolls. It gives the reader a real glimpse into Noemi and her fashion statements.

Honestly thought this was the book because I didn't see that it was just a kit to go with the book itself. I can't say it if was helpful or not since I haven't read the book yet.
