Review for the book club kit provide by NetGalley.
I appreciated the additional information that this little reader guide did. It made me realize that I was expecting all the wrong things from the novel.
The reader guide ends with cute paper dolls that have tidbits regarding the period dress. Before getting to the dolls, I was disappointed. I thought the novel was aiming for something meaty, but not really - the point was the mood and the feeling, the classic Gothic with a touch of modernity to spice it up.
This is not groundbreaking or challenging, but it does work well as an entry in the big-house-scared-woman genre.

This is a really nice supplement for the book! My favorite part is the Spotify playlist, which I think is a really cool thing that authors have been doing lately, and creates an atmosphere. There's a few mini-essays that also offer some insights into the book, and a paper doll of the main character with some of her outfits that is pretty cute!

Thanks to Netgalley and Penguin Random House Library Resources for the e-ARC of this book club kit! It would definitely come in handy for a discussion over this book!

It was a super helpful tool in facilitating my book club meeting and the members really appreciated all the interesting, original little details, including the printable paper dolls. I wish that I had thought to print them out before our meeting because they would have been the perfect way to decorate around our snacks and wine. So fun!!

I really loved Mexican Gothic and due to this book have added Silvia Moreno-Garcia to my "authors to always read" list! It kept me guessing until the bitter end and was the perfect blend of darkness, magic, and thriller.

And where is the novel, please?!? I only see a bunch of “content discussion”, comments for the readers and so on.
Are you pulling my legs? Is it a practical joke to mock reviewers?
I’m flabbergasted!

Mexican gothic is set in Mexico City around 1950s. Noemí Taboada is sent by her father to check on her cousin Catalina, who currently lives with her husband and his family (The Doyles) in a small town of El Triunfo, after her father received some concerning letters from Catalina. Noemí agrees to go in hope that her father approves that she gets her Master degree in anthropology.
Once she arrived in the Doyles’ mansion, she’s confronted with the cold and unwelcoming attitude of the family. Noemí struggles to get proper care for her cousin and grows incredibly worried for her health. However, she has put in her mind that she’ll do whatever it takes to get her cousin the care she needs, despite the weird nightmares and events that’s occurring.

Silvia Moreno-Garcia managed to write an engaging gothic horror book that’s both creepy and fascinating. Her writing was incredible and I very much enjoyed.
The plot kept getting darker and creepier page after page, it’s perfect for those who love historical gothic horror books. The characters were intriguing and keeps you rooting for the main character.

The reason I gave this a three stars is that I was personally more uncomfortable reading it than frightening. Some might enjoy that type of horror but unfortunately it wasn’t for me. There were times when I felt it was dragging on for a while and felt that some things weren’t explained. However I overall enjoyed the author’s writing style and might try another book by her in the future.
