"Mexican Gothic" is the first book i read by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and it was so so good.
Even if the beginning was just a little slow, after a few pages, the action just hit me. This book turned out to be more intelligent and goric that i thought it will be.
Naomi is a little spoiled and a little brat, but in the new circumstances, she changes kinda fast and i started to like her a lot.
The Doyle family was just awful, such a creepy and mean family (i do get that this was their point though). Everytime one of them spoke, i was imagining their ugly breath and empty eyes, ugh. But they are made so so good, i can see why you just can't like them. They are racist, they have many problems and secrets, and sometimes, they made me feel so anxious. They are easy to hate and they deserve it.
Francis was the only one from this family that i could fell for. He is going through so many things and he just accept them. I am still sad for him.

With every page, this book turned out creepier and creepier, which i really loved. The plot-twist, the memories, the secrets, the vibe of the house was just perfect. I feel i could reread this one when it's October and it's raining.

This is such a fun book kit, and I really enjoyed looking through it! If you loved reading this book and you can't wait to dive more into it, this is definitely something you should look at. My favorite part of the book club kit was the dress section. I always try to picture a character's outfit in my head when they describe it. Getting the chance to actually look at them in a picture was so fascinating.

Loved all the historical facts included and thought the questions were very insightful. My favourite part was definitely the outfits, they were so beautiful!

The Book Club Kit for Silvia Moreno-Garcia's Mexican Gothic was a valuable resource. Short and easy to sort through, it was filled with historical information, book discussion questions, and some great and fun add ons like a music playlist (which I loved), tidbits about the fashions of the era, and even some paper dolls.

This was an awesome addition after reading Mexican Gothic. Real excited to dive into the playlist if I am to do reread. I got together with my reading friends right after this download to discuss the topics and ask some questions.
The inspiration and details brings so much more to the book and makes me more appreciative of it.

Thanks NG for this tool!

I loved the atmosphere of gothic horror mixed with dark Victorian fantasy. The entire plot is very well written and the suspense that the author created mixing everyday situations with a supernatural horror caught my attention. I really liked the characters too. I recommend reading!

This book had a slow start, but the buildup was worth it, as the action (when it starts) starts at breakneck speed and moves along quite quickly to the inexorable finish. Shades of Lovecraft mixed with Crimson Peak.

To all those who loved the book and didn’t want it to end, here is more fun for them to immerse themselves in. We have a letter from the author, some discussion questions for your bookclub and even a spotify playlist. What I loved most were the 4 dresses which you can cut out and dress Noemi.

This will be a nice add on when I am able to read the book. I have heard nothing but good things so I am excited to use this as a companion.

Mexican Gothic follows the story of Noemi Taboada who goes to stay with her ill cousin (and her husband) in the Mexican countryside. The husband is nothing short of enigmatic, mysterious, and magnetic as Noemi struggles to figure out what exactly is going on in the house. Noemi begins discovering the dark history of his family and what terrible secrets lie in their past.

This is a great complement for the reading and the fact that we can print the last pages to make a real Noemí makes everything so much better.

Plus, I added the songs of the playlist because I wanna have the full experience by reading the real book.

This kit helped me to dive into the atmosphere of the Gothic story by Silvia Moreno-Garcia when I haven't yet gotten a copy of the book. This is a really nice piece of marketing, one of the most original pr-strategies I've come across. I especially loved the playlists and I'm glad I can keep those lists.

Thanks to NetGalley for making this review possible.

I'm impressed with this book made by a fan of Mexican Gothic, giving characteristics of the book such as events, facts and costumes.

Also, questions to be solved by reading the whole book, like a book club.

After the receipt of several disturbing letters from her recently-married cousin Catalina Doyle, Noemi Taobada travels from Mexico City to the small mountain town El Triunfo, There, at the Doyle family home High Place, she finds her cousin in a weakened state, and isolated by the Doyle family. Noemi spends her time in High Place uncovering the family history of incestuous marriage and maltreatment of both family members and workers.
The longer she stays at High Place, the more she suffers from unexplained ill effects: sleepwalking, loss of energy, malaise, etc., not unlike her cousin's malady.

As one expects in Gothic lit, Mexican Gothic is a slow-burn. Silvia Moreno-Garcia puts great care into the description and atmosphere of High Place and El Triunfo, and uses it to effect in the first half of the novel. Some might find a number of these scenes redundant, whereas others will appreciate the rise in tension.

The ending is a fair payoff for the slightly tedious mid section of the book. I won't spoil it here, Suffice to say that I enjoyed the book, but would have embraced a little better pacing.

I hadn't realised this was a bookclub kit rather than the book. Since I have read some of the book, but not for me. I fear. Reading tastes are so subjective.
