I didn't like the book "Mexican Gothic" but I loved the Book Club Kit. The Spotify playlist is a nice touch, but the guiding discussion questions add a lot to the story.

The Mexican Gothic Book Club Kit is a wonderful supplement to the original novel...think along the lines of DVD Extras. It is dessert for the reader that just did not want the book's world to end. I particularly loved the little bit of historical background and the suggested musical playlist. A family member spotted the paper doll graphics and now wants to print them out and borrow my copy of the book.

A great addition for book clubs. The extra information on the area was great and I loved the paper dolls.

This is an excellent resource to accompany “Mexican Gothic”. The history really helps readers get a better understanding of the context within the story. I am ALWAYS a fan of a playlist to go with the book and that would make planning a book club so much easier and fun.

This brings some interesting context to the setting and to the genre of Mexican Gothic.
I loved it also includes a playlist and even a little paper doll to dress up with looks the character from the book wears throughout the story. which might be nice if you have kids
And of course it also includes questions for the book club that were ok, nothing particularly creative..

I loved the vintage vibe of this story.
Although some parts felt drawn out, it was definitely an interesting dive into the family.

Really cute book club kit with photos of character outfits, a letter from the author and discussion questions. The questions spurred a lot of thought on the book and add to a book club discussion.

This is a support guide to any group reading Mexican Gothic. It gives you an introduction by the author and then a series of questions about the text are there for groups to use when discussing the novel. There are some supportive short essays which support the context of the novel (e.g. the style of gothic the novel alludes to).

I found this quite interesting to read after reading the novel and can see it would be useful to readers from book groups.

Absolutely breathtaking read. I'm a big fan of Silvia Moreno-Garcia and I was not disappointed.

Colonial horror, haunted houses, and delicious world-building. This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2020 and for good reason.

I read all of Mexican Gothic in one sitting...it is unputdownable!

It is dripping with gothic dysfunction and horror. So much of the horror is unspoken and not given a name which makes it even more haunting. much like the family dysfunction and manipulation. Mexican Gothic is moody, atmospheric, captivating, and should be now considered a classic.

This kit gives some background information on both the setting and the genre, particularly [regarding the latter] differentiating gothic from domestic noir and discussing the highs and lows of these genres.

It has the usual book club kit review questions.

There is a music mix list, which is a little odd as it clearly will not be the cup of tea of everyone who might enjoy the book.

And there is a fashion related activity to close out the kit.

The book club kit starts with a description of the historical context surrounding the story, which I greatly appreciated. The discussion questions themselves are pretty basic. They seemed like generic questions that could be used for any book rather than ones specific to Mexican Gothic. I wouldn't use these for a book club meeting unless we really needed a conversation starter. The playlist to go along with the story is a cool idea though and I would have enjoyed that the first time I read the book. And there is an interesting historical perspective on gothic romances and gothic stories. But the paper doll option at the end is...strange. Overall this is a very weird and disjointed addition to the end of this book. Some might like it but I wouldn't use most of these resources.

Mexican Gothic was one of my favorite books of last year so I was intrigued to take a look at the book club kit and it's contents. Overall, I thought the discussion questions were well oriented and I adored the curated playlist and doll idea. This seems like the perfect way to get readers further engaged with the text and I certainly hope to see it used in the future.

This was a very helpful book club kit. I assumed that this was the actual book, but it was not. Either way, it would be helpful for a bookclub discussion.

I read Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno- Garcia in October of 2020. The book club discussion kit is great for you and a group of friends to discuss this book. Some of my favorite aspects of the kit were the curated playlist and the dress up paper dolls.

This was a helpful kit for bookclub questions and i feel it helped the members discuss the book well. I did think it was the actual book though but soon realised it wasn't and it helped anyway.

I'm giving it 3 stars because, thinking at the use of this as a Book Club Kit, I thought it was pretty basic. The questions were too simple and lackluster, and wouldn't bring interesting talks on the many subjects Mexican Gothic assemble. However, in the extra texts that came with it (The Real Del Monte, which explains about the inspiring city for the novel and its fascinating history, and The Girl in the Mansion - OMG SO GOOD I CAN'T - which explained how the literature evolved from gothic romances to domestic noirs, and along with that the role of the female protagonist) were top notch, and that could bring amazing conversation that could be used in some questions - but didn't. The playlist overall was OK, but I would give it a pass.

Keeping it simple, boring questions, excellent extra material on texts.

I'm obviously stupid and didn't know what a book club kit was. All the same, this was fantastic. Amazing ideas and questions for discussion.

I picked this book thinking it was the actual book. Unfortunately for me it was a discussion of the characters and the setting.
In saying that, I now have a better idea for when I do read the book that is on my tbr!

Great kit for bookclubs! The questions are thoughtful and thorough. I like the dress activity!

A bit frustrated people are rating this low because they thought it was the original book, lol. It says Book Club Kit. Well.

Not happy with this was misleading because I just saw title and thought was the book and would have loved to read actual book and not the book club stuff. Can’t review something that doesn’t involve the book.
