I'm giving it 3 stars because, thinking at the use of this as a Book Club Kit, I thought it was pretty basic. The questions were too simple and lackluster, and wouldn't bring interesting talks on the many subjects Mexican Gothic assemble. However, in the extra texts that came with it (The Real Del Monte, which explains about the inspiring city for the novel and its fascinating history, and The Girl in the Mansion - OMG SO GOOD I CAN'T - which explained how the literature evolved from gothic romances to domestic noirs, and along with that the role of the female protagonist) were top notch, and that could bring amazing conversation that could be used in some questions - but didn't. The playlist overall was OK, but I would give it a pass.

Keeping it simple, boring questions, excellent extra material on texts.

I'm obviously stupid and didn't know what a book club kit was. All the same, this was fantastic. Amazing ideas and questions for discussion.

I picked this book thinking it was the actual book. Unfortunately for me it was a discussion of the characters and the setting.
In saying that, I now have a better idea for when I do read the book that is on my tbr!

Great kit for bookclubs! The questions are thoughtful and thorough. I like the dress activity!

A bit frustrated people are rating this low because they thought it was the original book, lol. It says Book Club Kit. Well.

Not happy with this was misleading because I just saw title and thought was the book and would have loved to read actual book and not the book club stuff. Can’t review something that doesn’t involve the book.

I enjoyed this book. This is a new author for me and I look forward to seeing what is next. This is a well develped story that kept me turning pages to the end. This book is full of action and so much more. The characters are relateable and engaging. They bring the story to life and left me wanting to know what happened next. They are unique and really made the story for me. I highly recommend this book.

I've gotten "Mexican Gothic" by Silvia Moreno-Garcia by Netgalley for an honest review.

I've seen this book various groups and it was a Bit hyped when it came out, so I took the chance when I saw it on netgalley.

The first 70% of the book was rather boring and dull for my taste. But then it got interesting and catching my interest, with some wierd crazy stuff.

The book has some crime and some mystery and thrill.

But unfortunelly a book need to keep me in it's grib the entire time I read it, and this book failed to do so. It's not bad, it's just not me. There for my rating.

This will be a great resource for book clubs to help keep the discussion on track and will hopefully provide some insights they hadn't considered before

I absolutely loved the book and this Book Club Kit is certainly a lovely bonus. I don't find the club questions to be quite as comprehensive as I may have expected. It's clear that significant thought and research went into the writing of the book and the extra anecdotes by the author help to exemplify that. This is a fantastic addition to any book club, classroom, or solo reader looking to build on their Mexican Gothic reading experience.

This was a great book with so much happening in the pages. This book club kit really takes the guesswork out of preparing for a book club discussion. It is thorough and well organized and contains all the necessary elements for a great discussion.

This is an interesting reader's guide. The author’s note provides context for the novel, a further backdrop of the colonial history of the novel's setting. Some unique details - particularly the one about the tombstones- bring what I read about the story to life. While, overall, I have mixed feelings about “Mexican Gothic,” reading Moreno’s notes and history of her land it becomes clear how passionate she is about her novel and her country. This adds further context for discussing “Mexican Gothic” through the lens of post-colonial commentary. However, I found the discussion questions and dress-up game to be very juvenile, geared more toward young adult readers. This makes sense as parts of the books also seemed more aligned with young adult fiction.

Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Literary Resources for kindly providing me with a digital copy of this book for review.
This is a little book designed to accompany the reading of the novel “Mexican Gothic”. It makes an excellent resource for book clubs and study groups. There are suggested questions, a Spotify playlist to accompany your reading, many author explanations of setting choice etc, and a little oddly- a cut out and dress paper doll. I used to love doing these as a child so maybe they are trying to create some nostalgia, but I don’t know many adults that would actually cut out and dress the paper doll.
I have not read the book yet, but I intend to very soon and I will certainly use this little book to enhance my reading experience. Well worth trying if you want an immersive reading experience.

I have yet to read the book, but it is on my to-read list. This kit is a nice collection of questions that provide more thought to the characters, setting, history, and music! Having a playlist to accompany the book was unexpected and quite interesting, an addition on the author's part to pull the reader into the story. The cutouts are delightful, and once I read the book, I'm sure it'll all make more sense.

NOTE: THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE BOOK CLUB QUESTIONS ETC, NOT OF THE ACTUAL NOVEL

A nice little collection of 9 questions, all suitable as starting points for discussion of the novel in a book group setting. Also includes a playlist of various music provided as a "soundtrack" to the novel, provided by the author and accessible via Spotify. There are various author notes and activities, including (inexplicably) a paper doll of the main character, Noemi Taboada, with several different paper cut-out outfits to fit onto it.

A nice little addition for those who are reading the book with a group for discussion.

What a delightful little bit of kit!

There were some interesting questions included but what I really enjoyed were the little pieces of backstory by the author, explaining the history of the setting and such.

Also the cut out doll and clothes were very cute! I used to love those as a kid and the outfits chosen were beautiful and well designed.

All in all a lovely addition for any book club reading Mexican Gothic!
