this was a fun little q&a to read! always interesting to read more from the author’s insight. there were cute little additions than others from this book club and i appreciated the effort and aesthetic of all these!

Noemi is a young socialite living in Mexico City and finding her path in life. When her cousin, Catalina, writes an odd and concerning letter to Noemi's father, he feels that Noemi should travel to Catalina and ensure she is okay.

Catalina lives in High Place with her new husband Virgil Doyle. Catalina met Virgil a year or so ago and they had a whirlwind romance and were married within a short period of time. Once married, Virgil whisked his new bride to his family estate deep in the country where power is limited and phone lines are non-existent.

When Noemi arrives to High Place, she's surprised by the isolation and the dreariness of the countryside. High Place is in near ruins with very little working electricity, thin walls, and many unused and decrepit rooms. The people of High Place are also strange - Francis, Virgil's cousin, is rail thin and pale as a ghost; his mother is very severe and rigid with a multitude of rules even her guest is expected to follow; the servants are nearly mute and completely ignore Noemi; and worst of all, Howard Doyle, the patriarch of the home and Virgil's father, is an ancient, ailing man with backward opinions and unfiltered, inappropriate speech.

Noemi quickly realizes something is amiss at High Place. Though the Doyle's Doctor claims Catalina is suffering from tuberculosis, none of her symptoms seem in line with the illness. Noemi herself begins to feel weird and have odd experiences at High Place. Her dreams become violent and life like, and her childhood sleepwalking habit seems to have resurfaced.

As Noemi begins to learn of the dark history of High Place, the surrounding mines, and the Doyle family, she's worried something evil lurks in the walls of High Place and runs through the blood of the Doyle family. It's possible something sinister, or even paranormal, is going on, and Noemi is determined to discover the truth and rescue her cousin.

This was such a beautifully written novel. High Place really came alive for me and I could feel the dampness, hear the silence, and sense the unease brooding around every corner. It was truly atmospheric and I loved the modern gothic feel.

I particularly loved the female characters in this novel. Noemi was vain, flirtatious, and flippant. However, she was also incredibly intelligent, a feminist far ahead of her time, independent, and fiercely loyal. I wanted more of the stories of Ruth, Agnes, and Alice and it would be incredible if the author ever chose to do a prequel!

I am drawn to books with darker, gothic themes and this one was wonderfully executed. It touched upon many relevant and important issues such as racism, classism, and sexism. It was thought provoking and the language was transportive.

If you love a slow burn mystery with dark and descriptive language, this one is definitely for you! The book club kit is also fantastic for a buddy read or book club discussion! There are lots of great prompts that really get the conversation flowing.

So detailed and well thought out. I loved Mexican Gothic and reading through this guide reminded me of many of the reasons I loved the book so much.

This book club kit is a welcome addition for any readers who fell in love with the world and story Moreno-Garcia created. The playlist and additional text allow readers to gain insight into the author's experience of creating the novel and spend more time in the setting. The illustrations of clothing at the end are delightful and unique.

This is by far the most informative book discussion tool I’ve seen. It starts off with a letter from the author herself, explaining a bit about the background to the book, the location, and where she drew her inspiration from. This is followed by nine questions for in-depth discussion. The inclusion of The Playlist compiled by the author and available on Spotify was fun, as are the Dress Up Noemi dolls where you can print out and dress the character in a selection of outfits.

This is an excellent tool for any book group looking to discuss and share their experiences of reading this title.

Book Club Kit: Mexican Gothic is one of a series of supportive brochures available for top end fiction and nonfiction titles from Penguin Random House Librarian Resources. Released 11th Feb 2021 by Penguin Random House, this entry is filled with erudite and interesting background history to enhance the personal or book-club reading experience for Silvia Moreno-Garcia's atmospheric book from 2020. This brochure is 14 pages and includes discussion questions, musical playlist, background reference and history, and a beautifully illustrated paper doll set (with instructions).

I enjoy the extra resources and enhancements the larger publishing houses are able to employ to support their publications. I also appreciate that most library systems can provide quite a lot of extra support and guidance to their patrons and groups. These materials would be appropriate for online/remote discussion groups, formal education (modern literature, modern history, gothic literature, etc), and for enhancing personal reading. I found a number of good ideas for further reading with which I was previously unfamiliar. I love the genre.

Five stars. Compact, succinct, beautiful typesetting and graphics. It does -not- include the original book, just the discussion and support materials. Available free from the publisher's website.

I loved the book and can definitely see it as a show/movie. This discussion guide is a great resource for a book club.

A simple kit of the volume with images and insights along 14 pages. Nothing important even if it's nice. Maybe if I had been the publisher, I wouldn't have put it on netgalley. The story certainly intrigues me and intrigues me. I hope to be able to read it as soon as possible given both the wonderful cover and the plot that suggests great interest.

A really fun book club kit that Mexican Gothic readers will enjoy! This seems aimed at young adult readers and provides information about the novel and the history it's based around. The discussion questions were a little simple and open-ended. Other fun tidbits include: the Doyle family seal described in the book, a music playlist curated by the author, background information/history, and a paper doll Noemi with multiple outfits with information about the clothing styles.
