The Ack Ack Girl
by Chris Karlsen
A WW2 book about Ava Armstrong a women who wants to do her bit for Britain’s war effort and volunteers to help man the anti aircraft stations during ww2.
A well written book about a job that isn’t often written about. Follow Ava’s journey for her war effort with many other young women at the anti aircraft stations. Enjoyable read

this was a great historical novel, the characters were great and I really enjoyed going on this journey. It was a well done read with a interesting storyline.

Set in WWII 1941 Britain, Germany continues to blow British towns to bits. Britain just doesn't have the necessary manpower to retaliate successfully enough so posters appear calling women to duty in anti-aircraft stations to perform jobs typically done by men. This book details the lives of one such girl in particular, who is called an ack ack girl. We are also shown glimpses of her personal life before she begins her job including those of whom she loves.
Adventurous Ava Armstrong wants to help in the war effort and flying and dealing with aircraft appeals to her. She realizes it is dangerous and also prestigious as it requires special skills. When she passes tests with flying colours she is placed into such a position where she meets other girls and also several young men.
The historical information (including duties portrayed) is very interesting and I very much enjoyed learning more about this important era. This book does describe horrors of war to an extent but that is not the main focus and it is far less graphic and gritty than many others. Courage, love and hope are themes.
Historical Fiction readers ought to seek out and read this. My sincere thank you to Books To Go Now and NetGalley for allowing me the privilege of reading this lovely book.
