Quinta Brunson's ‘She Memes Well’ is a delightful and humorous exploration of internet culture, personal anecdotes, and the power of memes in today's digital age. With her unique voice and comedic prowess, the Emmy Award-winning writer takes readers on a journey that is both relatable and highly entertaining.

From her early childhood experiences, being raised a Jehovah’s Witness, her relationship with her parents, navigating the world of social media, to her rise to internet stardom, Brunson has written a debut essay collection with wit, charm, and a refreshing dose of self-awareness. One of the book's strengths lies in Brunson's ability to connect with her audience. She effortlessly blends hilarious observations with genuine reflections, making ‘She Memes Well’ a joy to read for both avid Brunson enthusiasts and those looking for a lighthearted escape.

Beyond the humor, ‘She Memes Well’ also touches on Brunson’s experience with depression. She writes about her experience of being a woman in a predominantly male industry, and how being a woman of colour has affected her life. These moments of vulnerability add depth to the narrative, allowing readers to connect with Brunson on a deeper level and appreciate the resilience and strength she demonstrates throughout her journey.

The book's structure keeps the pacing engaging and dynamic ensuring that readers are consistently entertained. Brunson's writing style is conversational and accessible, making it feel as if you're having a witty and entertaining conversation with a close friend.

In conclusion, Brunson has created an essay collection that is a celebration of the absurdity and interconnectedness of our digital lives, reminding us that even in the world of memes, there are stories waiting to be told.

A huge thank you to NetGalley and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for the advanced reader’s copy of ‘She Memes Well’. The opinions expressed are entirely my own.

She Memes Well is a great collection of essays sharing about Quinta's upbringing to current success. Qunita's fame was over time from web videos, short skits to her successful tv series today. It's always nice to learn about about the years that formed who an writer like Quinta is. Great debut memoir, hope for more from her in the future.

*Thanks to Random House Children’s Books and #NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book to review in exchange for my honest opinion.* #AdvancedReadersCopy #NetGalley #SheMemesWell

She Memes Well by Quinta Brunson was an easy read and fun to listen to. Throughout every essay, it felt like I was listening to a friend update me on the backstory to different parts of their life that I had missed. I loved that Quinta gave us glimpses into her life and the trajectory that lead her to where she is now. I would definitely recommend this to people who enjoy her memes, people who loved her work with Buzzfeed, and or people who just happen to love Abbott Elementary :).

I first saw Quinta at Clusterfest in SF, and then watched her on A Black Lady Sketch Show, and it's obvious to say - but she is really funny. I think that there is something real and raw about her, and I think we got a taste of that in this book. She talks to you like she's your friend, which makes the essays easy to consume. She's relatable and I think offers a comedic perspective on some of the ways life can really weigh you down if you let it. I can't wait to see what she writes next!

Thanks to Netgalley, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt & Quinta for the e-arc in exchange for my honest review.

Quinta is charming, honest, funny, and powerful woman in her video content and it all translates fantastically into her book. Never one to shy away from the truth her series of essays makes the readers feel seen in the struggles of being a female in an industry filled with males. I especially love that Quinta addresses how being a woman of color effect her in her life journey. This book was empowering and helped me understand a different point of view.

💭What I thought would happen:

I thought it would be a hilarious memoir and recollection of how she became a meme and what happened to her afterward.

📖What actually happens:

The book goes into detail about Quinta’s move to LA, her rise to success, and all the bumps and turns along the way!

🗯Thoughts:

I loved the writing style of the book. It ended up being much more meaningful than I would have originally thought. I thought it was going to be all humor and perhaps wildly inappropriate and dark but it shocked me with its loveliness!

This woman is so darn cool, one of those people you’d know you’d be friends with if you met them IRL. Huge fan! 😍

I look forward to hearing about how her career progresses in the future!

Great insight into the life of a respectable young woman. Humor and truth is good for the soul. Comedy memoirs are some of my favorites, this one is no exception.

I had never seen the memes the author was in, but the book sounded good so I decided to give it a read. I'm so glad I did. Her essays sounded like she was sitting across the table from me while we had a lunch date. They were honest and open and funny and poignant and felt so truthful. I look forward to seeing more from Quinta Brunson in the future. Highly recommended.

I was a big fan of Quinta's work through Buzzfeed and what I've seen in various parts of the internet, so when I saw her book on the list of ARCs on #NetGalley , I definitely had to request it. This was definitely one of those books that I enjoyed for the entertainment value, but it was also extremely introspective about serious subjects such as her relationship with her religious parents, being a black person in America, and how society interacts with each other on social media. I enjoyed learning about her life growing up and about her adult life on her way to developing her comedy career. The only negative things I can think of are that there didn't seem to be much of an order to the chapters, and there were certain ideas that didn't feel finished. Like I think I would have liked to have more of an idea of how her relationship with her parents is currently now that it's pretty clear she's sticking to the path she's chosen. But overall I really enjoyed the book and I plan on searching for more of her content to watch. And I also recommend this book to anyone that enjoys popculture, comedy, and learning about different perspectives.

I went into this a fan of Quinta because of her time at buzzfeed. Prior to her work there I actually didn’t know her at all. She started her fame with memes on Instagram that I actually hadn’t seen before. What I loved about this collection of essays was getting to know Quinta on a level that I hadn’t before. Seeing who she was growing up, how she felt about her time at buzzfeed, and hopes of the future.
I found this inspiring at times, insightful, and funny.

Normally I don’t gravitate towards essays like this, but I really enjoyed this. I feel that people who are even semi familiar with Quinta will get a lot out of it just as I had.

3/5 stars.

Comedian and actress Quinta Brunson shares her personal and funny stories about overcoming obstacles in life. Without any formal media training, Brunson created and launched her first video series on Instagram in 2014. Her videos quickly became the first to break through on the platform. In She Memes Well, Quinta talks about how she went from flat broke to half-recognized in her debut collection. Quinta Brunson hilarious, she spent about four years writing this book, which is a lot of work, but it was well worth it. Each essay is unique and funny, and each one is very relatable. Thank you, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, for the gifted copy via net galley.

Since seeing her in the Buzzfeed videos, I always thought Quinta Brunson was one to watch. She is smart, funny, real, and honest. I love the walks down memory lane when she was describing high school and college. She felt like a lot of people I knew back then. I highly recommend this book Quinta will make you laugh until you cry and remember a lot of things from back in the day (some you probably wish you could forget). One of my most favorite reads and reviews. Thanks Quinta and thanks Netgalley.

I reviewed this book after receiving an ARC copy from netgalley. I really enjoyed this collection of essays. Quinta is funny and insightful, skillfully weaving together tales into one theme. I've been a fan of Quinta for what seems like forever and seeing her do well feels like seeing a cousin do well. It was really interesting and enjoyable to learn more about my 'internet cousin'. These essays are interesting to read and very relatable. I highly suggest reading this book. I'll also be first in line to watch Spiderline when it inevitably hits theaters. lol

It’s been some time since I last read an essay collection. My typical nonfiction reads are science or history based. Yet, I was looking for something I hadn’t read in a while. I remember Quinta Brunson best through her internet content. I’ve seen the memes and I’ve watched the videos, which garnered my interest in her essay collection, She Memes Well.

Essays can come from a deeply personal place, especially when they are autobiographical. She Memes Well falls firmly within that category, and I have to say that it was a good collection of essays. It was a thoughtful exploration of many topics, and the overall reaction I had to it was a positive one. Brunson wrote (at length) about the people and experiences that were integral to her. Often times, this included—but wasn’t limited to—reminiscing about the ups and the downs throughout her life through topics ranging from her early education and childhood to the beginnings of her career.

She Memes Well proved to be the perfect fit for a weekend read. And if you’re a fan of Brunson’s work, I high recommend this one.

I really like Quinta as an internet personality so I was so excited to read her book. It's a twist on a traditional memoir which I enjoyed, it was a collection of essays that helped to give the book a casual and friendly tone. I felt like she was my friend telling me all about her life.

I think this would be a really great audiobook.

This book was a page turner from beginning to end. I literally couldn’t put this book down and finished in one reading. Such a hilarious and heartbreaking story of the life of a comedian . I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

She Memes Well is a delightful mix of traditional memoir-style essays with a humorous twist. Not every story is laugh-out-loud funny, but some definitely are. Brunson is an expert at one-liners, so I had a few oh-so-attractive snorts here and there while reading this book.
One major thing that stood out to me is that while this book is written by a Millennial and targeted to a mainly Millennial/Gen-Z audience (I am a high school librarian and will be buying this book for my high schoolers), Brunson does an excellent job of explaining the background of memes and other forms of social media communication. I could give this book to my Baby Boomer parents and they’d probably develop a better understanding of meme culture.

Reminiscent of Samantha Irby (one of my favorites), Brunson’s writing is dry and witty, relatable, and thought-provoking all at once. She discusses being raised Jehovah’s Witness, being Black in America, and being a woman with a great balance of humor and sobriety.
