Thank you to NetGalley and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for an advanced electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

In this essay collection, Quinta talks about her first experiences with being a source of entertainment as a child, discovering the internet and memes, and the things that have shaped her from then to now. She takes a casual, intimate tone, making the reader feel as though they're sitting down for coffee with a good friend. Quinta's voice is funny and genuine, and her stories hold your interest and command your attention.

When I was first approved for this, I was extremely excited. I had been following Quinta in her BuzzFeed days, and I had always found her to be hilarious. So of course, I "saved" this book for later. I am so happy I have now had the chance to read it. I love her voice and the ease of which she tells her stories. She's honest and real while never being dry or boring. Great read!

I received this as an ARC from NetGalley for my honest review.

This collection of essays was delightful, real, and gave real insight into who Quinta is. This book felt like the progression of a sleepover with one of your best friends. It starts off with telling stories from childhood and at one point you're in the middle of the night and you're talking about the deep stuff then to lighten everything up you talk about your favorite shows and movies and music. And then it gets real again. And in a time where we're all alone, or not being able to hang out with friends over a glass of wine and have sleepovers this book provided a deep comfort.

Quinta Brunson is one of my favourite BuzzFeed alumni, and reading this felt like talking to a friend after a long day. Her essays span from childhood to present day, chronicling the important moments in her life and how she became the Quinta we (love to) see on the internet. "She Memes Well" opens a door into Brunson's world, all the good and bad parts, challenges us to pursue our dreams and fall in love, counsels us on how to deal if (and/or when) we become a meme.

Pretty solid 4 star review. I enjoyed many of the anecdotes as a creative performer myself and found the final chapter really moving. Highly recommend reading this even if you don’t know who Quinta is as its a fascinating book of a very interesting life lived through internet success. I found some parts less interesting or the pacing slowed but that’s just my personal preference and opinion. I still think it’s a great read.

I was a big fan of Quinta's work through Buzzfeed and what I've seen in various parts of the internet, so when I saw her book on the list of ARCs on #NetGalley , I definitely had to request it. This was definitely one of those books that I enjoyed for the entertainment value, but it was also extremely introspective about serious subjects such as her relationship with her religious parents, being a black person in America, and how society interacts with each other on social media. I enjoyed learning about her life growing up and about her adult life on her way to developing her comedy career. The only negative things I can think of are that there didn't seem to be much of an order to the chapters, and there were certain ideas that didn't feel finished. Like I think I would have liked to have more of an idea of how her relationship with her parents is currently now that it's pretty clear she's sticking to the path she's chosen. But overall I really enjoyed the book and I plan on searching for more of her content to watch. And I also recommend this book to anyone that enjoys popculture, comedy, and learning about different perspectives.

Quinta Brunson is probably best known for her work with Buzzfeed and a Black Lady Sketch Show. In SHE MEMES WELL, Brunson writes about growing up in Philadelphia, the youngest of five children. From a young age she enjoyed being in front of an audience, starting with dance and then cheerleading, and ultimately her love for comedy. She had a dream of starting a career in comedy in Los Angeles. In this book of essays we learn about her journey through the industry, some of her favorite pieces of pop culture, and more. While the majority of the book is lighthearted, she touches on some heavier topics such as the prevailing beauty standards especially in media, frequently being the only (or one of few) person of color in a room, and the effects of violence against black people.

First, I love Quinta from Buzzfeed. And knowing that she came from Philly my hometown was icing on the cake. I loved it cried, laughed and it's nice to see more positive things in life what we need right now.

Quinta, that lady from Buzzfeed, or that lady from HBO, or that lady from the meme, shares personal stories that made her into the woman she is today. Lying to her religious parents, blissing out to Stevie Wonder, moving across the country to pursue her dreams, and putting up with purse-dog people all shaped the way she sees the world and influenced her comedy. Recommended for readers of Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me and Yes Please.

First up thank you for this book, I am happy I got to try it... sadly we didn't click. I have been thinking about just DNF-ing this for weeks now. I tried reading the book, chapter 1 was just cute and fun and I really liked it.. but then I got to two and was just very conflicted about things there. It didn't feel right. But I went on to read chapter 3 despite this.. but really what was said in chapter 2 just stuck with me. In the end I just decided to stop reading as I wasn't looking forward to the rest of the book any more. I am sure this is for someone, the author has a nice writing style.

While I was not really familiar with Quinta Brunson before reading this book, it sounds like I will be hearing a lot more of her comedy soon. Between standup, the internet/ social media, and writing for TV shows and movies, she seems to be involved with a ton of projects.
Her writing was really relatable. Her tone made you feel like she's your friend who is telling you her life story. She has some really fantastic stories and knows how to paint a picture with her words. It was a really fun book to read.
That being said, it's also really timely. The end of the book was written recently and delves into heavier topics. I appreciate her writing on them, and her perspective as a Black, American woman.
I don't necessarily feel it is fair to compare her book to Samantha Irby's or Phoebe Robinson's because they're all very different writers. I enjoyed Quinta's take on modern celebrity and life as a millennial. I think it will be interesting to see what kind of essays she will be writing in another 5 to 10 years. I look forward to more from Quinta soon!

I honestly had no idea what to expect when first reading this. But I'm glad I gave it a chance and I can't wait to read this when it gets published.

-to start—i was not super familiar with quinta’s work. i remembered her buzzfeed videos and seeing some of her memes in passing, but i largely didn’t know much about her before reading this book. a big thing i was so excited to read about was her stand up/improv/second city work, as i’m a big fan of comedy.
-i’ve read a lot of comedy memoirs, and i really enjoyed this one! there were many times she had me laughing out loud, and other times when i was in actual tears.
-while i enjoyed a majority of the book, i will say that the “quinta’s classics” chapters seemed a little self-indulgent and dragging. i definitely found myself losing interest most during those chapters, as it felt very random and unnecessary to the book. i understand that these classics are things that have shaped her into who she is and hold significant meaning to her, but with how short each description was, there was never enough time to really give each one significance to the reader.
-all that said, i absolutely loved this book! quinta doesn’t hide who she is or the fact that she is a flesh-and-blood human with layers (like an onion,,,,) i can’t wait for the world to read this book!

thank you to netgalley and houghton mifflin harcourt for the digital ARC

In a series of creative essays, Quinta Brunson, of Buzzfeed fame, writes about childhood and her current internet notoriety. Being a huge fan of hers, I enjoyed getting a behind the scenes look at her coming to age origin story through her humorous tales. Definitely a good read.

She Memes Well is a series of essays written by Quinta Brunson, everyone's favourite Buzzfeed alum. The essays follow Quinta from childhood to current stardom detailing her relationship with the internet, performing, and creativity in funny and meaningful ways.

I have been a huge fan of Quinta throughout her time at Buzzfeed. Her work is always amazing and she makes me laugh. I loved getting a sneak peak of what inspired her to pursue her career and keep going in a time people aren't usually encouraged to pursue creative careers. This was an awesome collection, and I would highly recommend it.
