This was an enjoyable read. I had to finish this one in a day as it was exciting. I love westerns and this was the more old fashioned style of gun slinging type novel with plenty of action. It was a great storyline and I enjoyed the characters they felt realistic and developed well throughout the story. I actually rated this book 3.5 stars rounded up as it is better than a average read. This book had a great medium pace to it. I am looking forward to reading silver trail Christmas out in October. I did lose concentration a few times while reading this book but I can't put my finger on what is was about the book that didn't fully keep my attention. I understand that this may be a personal thing and if you love reading westerns then you should read a sample of the book. As my above average review of the book might be your 5 star read. I enjoyed it the story just didn't stick with me.

Many thanks to the author and publishers for creating this enjoyable high action novel.

Pretty fine and interesting western. Main character is a bit dumb, a bit flat and a bit too good, but it helps the story

Caleb Marlowe and the citizens of Elkhorn, Colorado return in book two of this Western adventure series. As the town is preparing for the celebrations to mark the upcoming solid eclipse, Caleb is determined to avoid all of the chaos. His plans are disrupted by the arrival of someone from his past. We learn a great deal more about Caleb mysterious past in this book.
I enjoy this book more than the first and am looking forward to the next book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for a copy of this book for review.

This was the first time I've read a book by Nik James and was pleasantly surprised! I loved this Western historical fiction, Caleb Marlow is a great character, mysterious, morally gray , yet determined and sweet. It's a lot more realistic than having a white/black character that i usually find in westerns. I adored him! The storyline keeps you on your toes and makes this a page-turner.

Bullets and Silver by Nik James is a great adventure that kept me on the edge of my seat more than once and found Caleb Marlow gunslinging, fighting for his life, encountering rattlesnakes & wolves, outnumbered and facing down his past.

Elkhorn, Co 1878

Prepare to be thrown back into the old west, where the law tried to keep control, but it was a hard job.

Caleb Marlowe just wants to go to his farm and get away from town. But the local judge wants him to act as sheriff, especially since a lot of people are coming into town to view the eclipse.

But someone is out to kill the judge and Caleb gets roped into taking the job. Unfortunately he runs into his past, which he has tried to keep hidden. Then his father shows up.

Gritty gunfights, strong characters and a storyline that will hold you to the end! Don't miss it.

Bullets and Silver by Nik James
Caleb Marlowe #2

Another riveting read in a wonderful Western series! Caleb Marlowe is definitely a force to be reckoned with and someone you want on your side…not against you!

What I liked:
* Caleb: a man of his word, excellent marksman, quick draw when necessary, good friend, capable, intelligent, sees issues that need to be handled and deals with them in the appropriate way…really like him and this series.
* Sheila: Doc Burnett’s daughter, raised by grandparents on the east coast, finding her feet in the West, strong, resourceful, has her eye on Caleb and might be perfect for him…eventually
* Doc Burnett: town doctor, willingly treats any patient, sees people clearly for what they truly are, good father, good friend
* Malachi: Blacksmith, father of Gabe, took young Paddy in – the three will probably play parts in the future books of the series
* Zeke: the sheriff…curious about him and what part he will play in the future
* The group that saved Caleb when he was in medical need…and how Caleb assisted them in the end
* Red Annie: strong woman, independent, great shot, skilled on the trail, friend to Caleb, a good sort that I would like to see again…wondering if she might have a yen for Caleb’s partner Henry Jordan
* Henry: has a story of his own and loved it, too. Glad he showed up at the end of this story and hope to see him again soon
* Bear: a wonderful dog that accepted Caleb as his own
* Thinking about what life might have been like back then and being glad I live now
* The tie-in of Elijah Starr-evil personified and someone that should be put down like the rabid dog he is
* Knowing that there is another book to look forward to

What I didn’t like:
* Elijah Starr and the thugs employed by him - villains it was easy to hate
* Thinking about the prejudice that was rampant at that time and wishing that it did not still exist
* Knowing that people like Judge Patterson and Robber Barron Eric Goulden weren’t much different one from the other…and wondering what they might get up to in the future.
* Having to wait for the next book to be ready to read.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely!

Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for the ARC – This is my honest review.

“Bullets and Silver” is a first time read by Nik James, new author to this reader. The story takes place in Colorado in 1878 and hero, Caleb Marlow has been deputized to help out when a solar eclipse could cause problems in the town of Elkhorn and also problems when a powerful judge could be the target for an assassination. Things get complicated for him when his past comes back to haunt him through blackmail and the culprit is his father, Elijah Starr.

This was quite the page turner for me and I really enjoyed every bit of this story. It is one of those stories that keeps you wanted to find out what happens in the end and provides on the pages the adventures you look forward to when reading about those fighting for justice in the wild west. A well-written story about a deputy bring his father to justice and closing an open chapter in his past.

Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for this ARC in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Bullet and Silver by Nik James was an entertaining continuation of his Western historical fiction series. Caleb Marlow just wants to set up his ranch, but the judge of Elkhorn keeps hounding him to take over as sheriff. When his past comes back to haunt him, Caleb has no choice but to wear the silver star again.

I really enjoy Nik James' writing , he brings the old west to life. I love all his characters, and I'm more than smitten with Caleb Marlow. He's competent, determined, morally gray, he can shoot a man dead and a few chapters later bond with an infant. He's not perfect, but he sure as hell tries his hardest. I also lived for the teasing banter and spark between him and Mrs. Sheila Burnett.

Overall, Bullet and Silver was a great adventure that kept me on the edge of my seat more than once and found Caleb Marlow gunslinging, fighting for his life, encountering rattlesnakes & wolves, out numbered and facing down his past.
