Fictionalized version of the little-remembered “Capitol Hill Thug” in 1900 Denver. The story had me guessing throughout as we learned more about Polly and Edwin. In the end notes the author states that she has fictionalized a lot of the story. She tied up the pieces neatly, but according to history everything was not quite so neat in real life. I liked the story as long as I continually remembered that it was fiction.

This story is a fictionalized true crime story set in Denver, Colorado in 1900. The story is told from the part of the 3 main characters. The Silver Shadow, Polly and Edwin. Polly is a twenty-something reporter at the Denver Post trying to find her way in a man's world. Edwin is a police officer that is trying to avenge his guilt for witnessing his father's murder. The Silver Shadow is a menacing murderer who is striking women on the streets of Denver. He feels that he is doing the Lord's work and teaching the people of Denver a lesson.
This was a captivating story to look at all of the different sides of the people that were being affected by the actions of the Silver Shadow.
Thanks to netgalley and Barbour Publishing for the arc. The opinions are my own.

I admit the cover piqued my interest in the book and then its set in 1900 in Denver, United States.
I was not disappointed. It holds intrigue, suspense and mystery
It was an enjoyable read and I was pleasently surprised at how much I enjoyed it.
I have not read anything else by the author and will be looking to see what else I can find.

The Silver Shadow is part of a series called True Colors. Each book in the series is a stand alone, and written by differing authors. What ties the series together is that they are all based on true crimes from the past. The Silver Shadow is set in 1900-01 Denver, Colorado. Although the author admits that this is the most fictionalized of the series, for the simple fact that history has nearly forgotten The Capitol Hill Thug and the women he attacked. However, the author's notes at the end show what facts are actually still known about the case.
Polly Blythe is trying to make it as a newspaper reporter in a male dominated world. The story that could make her as a journalist or cost her life is that of a man that hits women over the head with a pipe. He doesn't rob or violate them. He simply whacks them and leaves them. Polly teams up with Detective Edwin Price to discover who this miscreant is. This is also a Christian book, but it isn't preachy, it is simply showing how people of faith lead their every day lives.
Thank you #NetGalley and Barbour publishing for allowing me the opportunity to give my voluntary and honest review of #TheSilverShadow.

If you love history, murder, suspense, drama and light romance, this book is for you. The story is based on true incidents that really happend in 1900 in Denver. The story has been changed around, but due to spoiler alert, I will not being sharing.... This story is a page turner, with you think you know the suspect and then a big twist happens and the whole book changes, something I didn't see coming until the end. Great read that will keep you up reading until you finish.... you have to know who is the man after these women and what happens to Polly......

With this book, I tried to guess the murder and I was wrong everytime! I love the way that the author has taken some actual history and with artistic licence, made a story out of it. The history is included at the back of the book and is interesting to read as well.
I got this book in exchange for an honest review. It is one I'd be happy paying for. The characters are developed through the course of the book and are well thought out. I really enjoy this author, so I can't wait for the next one.
While this is a series, it can be easily read as a stand-alone as all the books are only linked through the historical crime aspect.

This is an excellent read! Perhaps more fictionalized than most in the True Crime series due to lack of extensive details, but an engaging and gripping read to the very end following clues to catch the illusive Silver Shadow.
The difficult part to read is the constant belief and repeating of how some men (still today), view women as mere objects only good for breeding and keeping perfect homes to serve men. Coming from a background of that belief, it was difficult at times for me to read this. But in the end, the main character Polly understands the truth. It is not men whom a woman must please, rather understanding the love of God and that He created us, gave us talents, and loves us is where we as women find our true worth.

I have really been enjoying this series. Most of the crimes I have heard of. And I did some researching on the ones I did not. This one was very elusive. I couldn’t find a thing about it. Still it was fun to read. I wonder what is in store for readers next?
My thanks to Barbour Publishing for a copy of this book via Net Galley. I was not required to leave a review.

This story is set in Colorado in 1900/01. Polly Blythe is out to create a name for herself in a male dominated world, as a newspaper reporter. She was hired to do the society page, which she find dreadfully boring. Edwin Price is a police detective. She hears of two women who were attacked and goes to the police station to ask questions. There she meets Edwin. She convinces him to let her go with him to question one of them. On the way she hears something and he goes to investigate, finding another victim. This story goes back and forth between trying to find the man Polly has dubbed at the Silver Shadow, and Polly’s desire to prove herself. Edwin is also out to prove himself. Page turning story, that keeps the suspense of who done it, until near the end. We meet Mr. Ward, Harry, Chief Atmstrong, O’Fallon, Lyle, Amelia, Edwin’s mother and a few of Polly’s boardinghouse mates.

The Silver Shadow is loosely based on a series of crimes that occurred in the early 1900s. The book is fiction based on historical facts. Author Liz Tolsma writes The Silver Shadow is the most fictionalized book of the True Colors crime series.
Overall, her book is a quick, easy read. The writing and characters are fairly standard. Nothing special but nothing truly awful either.
If you are looking for a quick, wholesome read The Silver Shadow would probably be a good choice.
Recommend.

Gripping Historical Drama!
This suspenseful Christian historical romance had me rapidly turning pages to find out what would happen next. The Silver Shadow is part of a multi-author historical fiction series(True Colors from Barbour Publishing) based off of true American crime stories, this one taking place in Denver at the turn of the last century. This was my first read of books from this series and it was so riveting I plan to check out others.
Along with the captivating storyline there are wonderful inspirational themes woven throughout, including forgiveness and faith. For different reasons the hero and heroine each try to prove themselves to others while eventually coming to the conclusion that God is ultimately in control. While there is some sweet romance, it develops gradually over time and is very subtle. Adding to the drama of the story told in third person there were intermittent sections of the book revealing the thoughts and plans of the nameless perpetrator. When you sit down to read this, be sure to set aside a good chunk of time because you are not going to want to put it down! This was the first book I have read by Liz Tolsma and I look forward to checking out more.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Silver Shadow by Liz Tolsma has a Jack the Ripper vive to it. The plot is about a mysterious man who attacks women who are found walking through the streets after dark. They are not home where they belong in the evening, so the killer, whose perspective we do see, wants to teach the town a lesson. This story reeks of originality in the True Colors of Historical series because readers actually see the killer’s perspective. Which personally, I actually like. If an author can make me empathic with the killer, then they crafted a wonderful story. With Silver Shadow, I really did not empathize with the killer. He was shunned by his wife, so he decided to treat other women horribly because of her choices. Not a good reason. As for the heroine, she is a brave woman who wants to be a reporter for a newspaper, and even went so far as to put her own life on the line as she researched and tried to write the story about the killer that she did not have the approval to do from the paper’s boss. Overall, Silver Shadow by Tolsma was a nice addition to the series. It fit right in with series’ goals and made for an interesting read. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading mysteries or the rest of this series.
I received a complimentary copy of Silver Shadow by Liz Tolsma from Barbour Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.

You won't want to miss this one. Very good! Thanks to Barbour Publishing and Net Galley for this great Christian, historical fiction mystery/thriller.
5 star

True, riveting stories of American criminal activity are explored through a unique stories of historical romantic suspense. Collect them all and be inspired by the hope that always finds its way even in the darkest of times.
I loved that this is based on true event's. The writing was amazing. This is one story y'all don't want to miss!

Once again, Liz Tolsma masterfully spins a gripping fictional tale based on real historical people and events. Although not as intense as some of the books in the True Colors Historical Stories of American Crime series, it definitely belongs here. This story features a spunky young woman reporter with something to prove, a detective bent on atoning for past failures, and an elusive, delusional criminal dubbed the Silver Shadow who is “skulking around the city whacking woman over the head” to send a message. The well-structured, attention-keeping plot flows at a steady pace. The fictional characters are well-developed and believable, and the real life characters are expertly integrated with the fictional ones. I appreciated the spiritual truths sprinkled throughout the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in e-book form from the publisher through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This True Crimes series has been really enjoyable! I like that it's based on true stories, which take you on a unique, and sometimes eerie, journey. The Silver Shadow is a man out on the streets of Denver, knocking out women who are walking home alone at night, and some have been killed. Police detective Edwin Timmer and his partner are searching for him somewhat aimlessly. Up and coming newspaper reporter Polly Blythe wants to get the inside scoop, to gain her acceptance in the reporting world, but gets too close for comfort, soon becoming the intended target of the Shadow. As they begin working together to capture the elusive assailant, time runs out, and so do the leads.
